I'd definitely appreciate it if this could be set up again - although I think I read in the 'Spoons magazine that the festival guide won't be printed on black paper again, which means I can keep notes in that as well.

Quick question which loosely relates to JDW fests.

I always understood a beer festival to be a time and place where a large number of ales are all available. EG most CAMRA festivals and large pub festivals (ours had 58 inc. those in the bar on at the same time). Recently I've noticed more and more pubs advertising a beer festival of, say, 20 beers, available over 2 weeks 4 at a time. Now to me, thats not a beer festival. The majority of our cask ales change after 1 firkin (at busy times it may be a kiln or 2 firks of a popular beer). Can I advertise a 'beer festival' and not do anything special?

RogerB
10-03-2011, 12:35
I think Youngs and Shepherd Neame are currently guilty of this. I have noticed in recent months individual pubs from both breweries advertising a beer festival when it is little more than a single (or 2 at best) guest ale from a pool of beers governed by the respective brewery that will be available over a short period of time. Nicholsons are also partly guilty although to a lesser degree as they do at least have a good range of guest beers outside of their "festival". Whilst I welcome any additions to the core ales of a particular tied pub, calling it a beer festival is a bit much.

If you want to be compared to a JDW, then yes.

:)

RogerB

In fairness to 'Spoons, they do at least get some exclusive brews in for the festivals (for better or worse) and resurrect a few lost ales that some of us never got round to the first time. That's far more than most chains would attempt.

Conrad
10-03-2011, 13:21
Its a fair reply, my instant thought was "How many chains would have the purchasing power?"

Office answer was "More than you might imagine."

Ok, renewed the Beer fest page (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/core/jdbeerfest.php).

Alesonly and RogerB, let me know if you want those visible records removed. Basically it is where JDW is duplicating Ciders and Perry from the last fest and you tried them then, I am not sure if you want to lose that record for this or not.

Just one Light Mild and one Chocolate?! Mild. :(

At least there is a Highgate / Davenports ale in there. I like Fox's Nob but it must have been sexed up to 5% for the beer festival.

Managed to kick off my campaign this lunchtime at Wakefield 'spoons (Six Chimneys). Rather disappointing to see the usual nonsense of having three non-feastival beers badged as such. :moremad: The young barman couldn't quite grasp why this might be annoying. Tried the following:

14. Batemans -All Seasons. Typical Batemans malt character. not unpleasant but not a lot of excitement, flavour wise. A half was enough.

32. Feral Brewery - Feral The Runt. Loved this. Wonderful tropical fruit flavours from the Citra Hops. Not particularly complex, but perfect for a warm Spring day. Sunshine in a glass.

Made a good start on the Wetherspoons Beer festival yesterday and visited three different spoons and had my first Eight Pints. :D

Had the following Ales all were good from what I remember this morning. Its a good job I wrote them on the list as I went along.

1) Caledonian Lip Smacker Lemon Ale
2) Balast & Point Calico Amber
3) Holden's April Showers
4) Batemans All Seasons
5) Big City Jamaica Stout
6) Feral The Runt
7) Shepherd Neame East Indian Pale Ale
8) Leeds Doubting Tom

I won't be as insanely active for this festival as I am trying to impress upon my doctor that I'm not a raging alcoholic but the git keeps calling me in for blood tests so I will limit my drinking to the 50 ales and won't be doing the ciders - you can keep the records as they are.

Just had email notification that, as is their want, the Crosse Keys, Gracechurch Street, will be following the national 'spoons fest with their own 'Superfest 4'.

11-29 April, 200 beers from around the UK (presumably on rotation across the 24 pumps), £2.50 per pint.

I might just get past my annoyance at the lazy 4 (four!!!!) pumps they bothered to have on a few Saturdays ago, and have a look in!

RogerB

It's been slow prgress for me so far - going to the IOW where there are only 2 'Spoons (and we didn't do either) hasn't helped and my first outing to the 2 local 'Spoons managed to tick off just 1 new festival beer. So far just managed 14 but for the most part I have been quite impressed with them, the Roosters Angry Yank IPA being the pick so far.

Off to St Albans tomorrow but with so many great pubs it is unlikely I will spend much time in either 'Spoons.

That's a very clever Beer Fest tracking page, and I paid my first visit last night to a 'spoons in Hertford.Genuinely surprised at the reasonable quality of the ales I tried.Given that our pre Palace meet up is now a 'spoons in Croydon I will be ticking off some more on Saturday armed with my next quarter of vouchers which justifies my CAMRA subscription.
However next week I doubt I will be anywhere near a 'spoons so I am not really going to be troubling the scorer this time around.

Looks like I'm the only one who's found the Butcombe Mendip Spring so far and there are a few others with just the single sampling. There are a few regulars who don't appear to be ticking them off either by choice or don't know the listing is there!

I also managed to accidently ticked off the Daleside White Bier but can't reverse it so I am on the look out for that one to level things up.

I found that last Saturday in the Hamilton Hall at Liverpool Street Station and made it my BOTW.That probably not much help unless the manager has called in some replacement barrels.

It was still there last night.

Haven't been too active this festival to be honest. Seems to be a good number of dark beers, which is a bit unusual for a Spring festival. The Blackcurrent Porter was good, as was the Big City Jamaican Stout. Best so far is probably the Angry Yank IPA. Must have a look at that ticking tool.

That should now be removed, wouldn't want to scare your Doctor ;).

One day I hope to make it a core part of the site rather than hidden away, long way off yet though, need to get the pubs working first.

Found it in The Foot of the Walk, Leith, last night. No clip on the pump when we went in but while we were there a Hawkshead Cumbrian Five Hop clip went on. Just as we were about to go the clip was swaped or the Arundel Prize Fighter. Forced to stay for another beer.

Spoke to the manager of one of the local 'Spoons who I know quite well - he hadn't been able to get hold of a barrel of the Prizefighter. He reckons they didn't brew enough so it was only available to the bigger city centre 'Spoons.

Well I'm still managing to tick 'em off. I didn't go into this Festival with my usual gung ho approach but have still managed to rack up 33 and with a couple of hours to kill tonight before the Big Country @ Shepherds Bush empire gig I should manage to get to 2 or 3 more 'Spoons in for a few more late ticks.

It is a close call between the Roosters Angry Yank IPA and the Feral Runt for my personal favourite at the moment but overall I have been very impressed with the selections for this Festival.

RogerB

Wasn't expecting much from my local 2 'Spoons tonight but managed to knock off the Daleside White Beer (excellent), Freemine Deep Shaft (a bit heavy) and by default, another pub in town had the Welton's Chocolate MIld. That just leaves 4 not including the ciders - a personal best by a long way!!!
