Not been in here since i have been reviewing - it is believed to be named after the now defunct iron foundries of Moxley, it isn't, it took it's name from the flourishing Indian restaurant trade locally!

Does anyone remember Cabbage Hall's former name? Looking at the photo I'm sure I stopped there years ago, The Bull springs to mind..........:glass:
I rather like the idea of drinking in a pub called Tiddlers, and I've a feeling the Kremlin Inn has had that name for a long time. Somethin to do with the Crimea? Of course, with my memory, that could be another pub entirely.
It's nothing new, this daft name-changing lark. Many moons ago The Sloop, Poole, became The Conjuror's Half-Crown and, not long after, a bit further up the road the well named, Halfway Hotel became The Grasshopper.
Not as daft as most of the pubs mentioned so far, but still inexplicable, is the recent change to my local pub. The, once again well named and historically accurate, Old Barn Farm has become the Three Legged Cross, the name of the village in which I live, over a mile away. Worse still, the pub sign displays the Manx cross:sick:
:drinkup::drinkup:Fairs fair, the beers pretty good, much better than it used to be..........

The Kremlin was originally known as the Craven Arms , which in the local dialect sounds a bit like Kremlin , it is very close to the M.O.D. radar/listening station (look for the giant golf balls) on the top of the hill hence radio Moscow on the jukebox !

Fictional I know but the TV series The Young Ones featured The Kebab and Calculator in one show.

A quick search reveals that this was in fact the Westbury Park Tavern (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/61801/). I suspect if it really was called the Kebab and Calculator someone would have been in and reviewed it by now.

Good grief, Strongers! If you google it you get:

What is a saggarmaker's bottom knocker?

What's My Line? was a Classic British television panel game from the 1950's. Contestants with unusual occupations sign in, perform a mime of the job that they do, then field yes-or-no questions from four celebrities aiming to work out the contestant's job.
The weirdest occupation on the programme is widely believed to be a "saggar maker's bottom knocker". Saggars are used to hold and protect pottery during kiln-firing, and by placing various substances in a saggar it is possible to produce dramatic visual effects on the finished pottery.
Producing saggars to the correct specifications required was a skilled job and needs a craftsman - the saggar maker. However, making the bases of the saggars is a less skilled job which can be left to a lesser craftsman, namely the saggar maker's bottom knocker, who makes the bottom of the saggar by placing clay in a metal hoop and literally knocking it into shape.

But I suspect a pub with real knockers and bottoms might be more pleasurable to drink in

My boss is from Stoke and told me of the Sagger Makers Bottom Knocker. When I went to see Port Vale V Dartford a few months ago I made a point of finding it (it isn't hard) but didn't have time to go in - it didn't look that great anyway. I believe it is owned by darts champ Phil "The Power" Taylor.

On a different note and slightly going askew (more in the stupid pub sign department - maybe a new thread on the horizon), there is a pub called the Queens Head that we used to pass on the way to Brighton (a new road has now been built so you don't pass it anymore). The pub sign had a picture of Freddie Mercury.

Al, I'd have thought one glance at that pub and the environs would be sufficient reason to give it a swerve. One of my bolder mates had a short stint as a barman in there, it wasn't for the faint hearted I gather.

My problem exactly. I went to Hastings for the day a couple of weeks ago with the intention of spending some time in the FILO and I never made it as there were to many other pubs on the way, most of which were well below par. Felt a bit cheated on the train back home, but another visit is on the cards!

There used to be one in Bristol called "Dr. Thirsty's Surgery" which I always thought was unusual. The pub's still there, but has been through several name changes since, and as you can imagine that was not it's original name.

As I recall, there were various medical items dotted about, including a skeleton. There were also several pronouncements from Dr Thirsty on the walls on how to cure a wide range of ailments. In most cases, the solution was to drink more beer.

Is this actually a pub?

My personal knowledge of this place dates back to the last Century (oh alright, the 1980s) and it was never really a pub - more of a nightclub. Not hat I want to re-ignite the debate on what should and shouldn't be included.

The last I heard it had closed down and re-opened as a venue for a specific sector of society as The Charles Street Bar. So either way, The Hungry Years is no more (unless it's recently been re-born) and should be either closed (prefereably - why spoil fond memories) or renamed.

Afternote - I have refered to this on the "That Doesn't Go There" thread.
