Looking at doing an away match v Braintree on Saturday with the appropriate round of local pubs. There isn't a single worthwhile review on PG (which does perhaps give the journey some purpose) and not much elsewhere in the way of a few pointers, in fact it all sound pretty grim. Does anyone have any experiences of Braintree? Looks like there are a couple of poor GK pubs and a 'Spoons and I don't really fancy the time and expense of doing a day trip if that's the best they have to offer.

Rubbish, so I'm told. A friend of mine used to live in Braintree but moved to Rochford a few months ago.

The only GBG listed pub is a Lloyds No 1 called the Picture Palace. Which kind of sums it up I suppose.

However as there are no reviews of any of the pubs I think you need to go.

Lie back and think of all those virgins (unreviewed pubs I mean. There aren't any virgins in Essex:D).

As Braintree look certs for promotion to the BSP this looks like bad news especially if we lose Histon or possibly Cambridge too
Naturally we will somehow stay up....it's the rules.

Actually what about a stop off in Chelmsford? Half hour down the line.

I've decided that a 4 hour round trip and potential £70 outlay on beer, rail fares and the match isn't worth it for such a dull sounding place. With all my local teams away it looks like it will be a weekend for the hoover, hedge trimmer and paintbrush.:(

Don't know any of those pubs Roger, looking forward to the reviews.

I have some knowledge of Braintree as one of the wife's sisters resides not far away in one of the villages to the North, and we often have to detour to visit the Freeport Outlet centre just off the A120.

There is some nice Real Ale country pubs residing in the nearby villages, but the centre of Braintree is indeed....rubbish...
