That's that then. Give it 12 months before production is moved Burton, the staff sacked and the site sold off. The beers will be nothing like their former selves and be quietly withdrawn due to lack of demand.

It will end up being taken over by Greene King who will close it down in order to stop Doom Bar taking over from GK IPA as Britains most ubiquitous pint.

The BBC article states:

Molson Coors said it was "100% committed to real ale and cask beer at Rock" and the brewery there could be expanded as a result of the deal.

Ah, Nick you beat me to it. The MC statement sounds like the equivalent of the football club chairman's endorsement of the manager two weeks before he's sacked.

Or the CEO of Kraft after the Cadbury takeover. That does make it hard to believe these sort of promises. Would be nice to be proved wrong for a change.

Ruddles
Boddingtons
Deuchars
Theakstons (for a period)
Hardy & Hansons
Morland
Gales
etc

Need I say more? Although the example of M-C's stewardship of White Shield may prove me wrong.

I for one have never particulary liked Doom Bar, Cornish Coaster or their Eden ale. Some of their stronger bottled beer is good though and their Head brewer Stuart Howe is probably one of the best around in large breweries. Some of the specialities are supposed to be good allthough I am yet to come across one.

I have maintained that Doom Bar is the new Courage Best of the South following the latter's steady slide and decline since the Bristol brewery closed. Indeed I started a thread on the Troll pit on the dominance of Doom Bar when their forum was still going.

So for me a state of ambivalance, alltough I am always sorry to see breweries closed like those mentioned above, I cannot see much change in this neck of the woods. Perhaps those further North should look out!

The proof of the puding is in the eating, I suppose!

"Humerous Hancocks beers" doesn't make me think 'quality' though....

Personally, I never saw much to write home about regarding Doombar. I know this is probably down to my taste buds, as it has won many awards, but to me, Skinner's beers have much more taste.

"Molson Coors Wales and West managing director Martyn Cozens said: It's a relatively young brand. It has a contemporary image with the Cornish surfing and sailing which adds to the brand's credentials."

Hmm, I hadn't associated that "brand image" with Doombar. maybe M-C have mistaken it for something else?

Do they realise the Doom Bar is a treacherous outcrop of rocks off the Cornish coast that has been the scene of numerous shipwrecks and claimed many lives! Not sure surfers and sailors would be to happy with the association.

Maybe, but I was in a pub yesterday, the choice was Doombar or Flowers Original, now would any real man ask for a pint of Flowers? Much more likely a pint of Doom :)

Which was my choice

I see Doom Bar so often that I would chance the pansy shandy even if DB is the better beer.

The Doom Bar is a sandbank at the entrance to the River Camel, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom_Bar

Whilst I am not a lover of Sharp's beer, When in Cornwall last week the Sharp's Special was definately the best of the range
