Thought it worth kicking off the next crawl thread as time is marching on.

The date seems to be the first topic that needs sorting. I am all for democracy but there is an issue worth discussing. There are several of our (mainly southern) correspondents who are still plagued by work and for whom when any Friday is chosen ,they are excluded.Although there are sound reasons for choosing Fridays,I am not aware that if a Saturday is chosen there are crawlers who will be likewise excluded whatever date is chosen. There will always be certain dates that won't suit because of prior commitments but are there folk for whom a Saturday crawl will always exclude them in the same way as a Friday would ?

In the past both London crawls (8/2/14 and 25/3/17) and the Reading crawl (13/7/13) were held on a Saturday,so is there a case purely for the next Southern crawl to focus the date selection only on Saturdays ? This might also help maximise attendance.

Tin hat on awaiting incoming !!

Do the usual - throw it out for a poll. I suspect it will be useful to decide location first though as that will affect some people's availability.

Currently a Saturday would suit me better though a Friday would be doable with plenty of notice.

I am made redundant Friday 13th October. Interviews ongoing but at the moment anything after then!

Which means it'll be a Friday. Because it always is.

A bit of variety wouldn't go amiss.

Friday and especially Saturday are probably the most convenient.

Makes no difference to me.

The Friday/Saturday discussion seems to have ground to a halt,so why don't we park that and ,as ETA suggests, discuss where in the south we would like to visit. How about any of the following:

Cardiff

Cambridge

Exeter

Bermondsey Beer Mile (Would have to be a Saturday  )

Any other obvious targets that folk fancy ?

How about Bury St Edmunds ?

:D Only Joking...

Have we ever done Bath on an official PuG crawl ? Havent personally been there in a while..

Likewise, havent been to Gloucester for a long time either. Looks like there might be enough there to sustain a day, but will bow to others with personal experience

I'll throw in Lewes, although maybe to deep south for a good attendance but some good pubs and it's not all Harveys. Won't get me many ticks though.

Looking at BF's excellent A Brief History of PuG Crawls (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?16155-A-brief-history-of-PuG-crawls) it appears Bath was tackled in Feb 2011, which doesn't necessarily prelude it from a revisit. I was going to throw Southampton into the ring, as I couldn't see it on BF's list, but as per Moby, appreciate this is as south as it gets.

Bath should certainly be on the list, the 2011 crawl was quite small and eclectic.

Southampton is a decent shout,I visited briefly two years ago but didn't go to many pubs. There seemed a lot of walking involved to create a crawl, but I'm sure other know this territory better than me and can advise.

Bath would be pretty good for me if it is a Friday, I can invoke contractor hours and bunk off early and be there within an hour.

I know it very well now, so I can be picky about where I decide to tope...seen it all before!

The better pubs are extremely well spread. With a fair bit of dross imbetween.

And most are a long trudge from the station

I agree that Southampton is too thinly spread - really needs a fair bit of bus travel which gets impractical for a group. Bath and Exeter I have done a fair amount of but wouldn't rule out. Lewes I love but it might be a bit small. Gloucester I don't know and would support. There are a few areas of Greater London that could be done, but that can get a bit pricey. Stretching 'South' a bit, how about Cardiff?

Seconded. A few gems, but a lot of walking

Of those mentioned, Cambridge is the most doable from the north(east).

Of those mentioned, Cambridge is the most doable from the north(east).

This is the only destination mentioned so far that I would be interested in.

There are a dozen pubs in the GBG, of which seven are fairly centrally placed:

Devonshire Arms (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/2578/) - closest to the station
The Cambridge Blue (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/2552/)
Earl of Beaconsfield (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/2587/) - about 10 minutes from the station but doesn't open until 1pm
Calverley's Brewery Tap (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/85662/)
The Elm Tree (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/2588/)
The Free Press (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/2601/)
The Geldart (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/2603/)

These can be done in one hour's walking time.

The next three are a bit farther out:
Royal Standard (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/2700/) (a bit further east of Earl of Beaconsfield)
The Maypole (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/2652/) (a bit further north-west of Champion of the Thames)
Champion of the Thames (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/2562/) (a bit further north-west of Elm Tree & Free Press)

No doubt there are some wildcards that might be of interest along the way...
