Another year has flown by. Time to start again...

Tough to set a target this time as I think I'm going to have a busy year. Hoping to do the house up and looking to move.

I'll stick to 2 a week so 104 is the aim.

Good luck to you all :cheers::cheers:

I'm going to concentrate on Camra's Pub Heritage list (https://pubheritage.camra.org.uk/), and not bothering too much about whether I've been there before. I may pop in one or two from time to time, but I'll never come anywhere near my last year's total.

Happy New Year to all, and I hope you enjoy your pub visits next year as much as I've enjoyed mine in 2022.

New year ,new challenge but I too doubt whether I will top the 2022 total of 251.

A realistic aim is to reach 2,600 reviews which therfore needs 138 new pub visits.Like Will there are a lot of London heritage pubs worthy of a visit and I do intend to revisit Scotland twice in 2023.There will always be the odd new pub while boating while noteable cities not on the canal system I've never been drinking in include Norwich,Newcastle,Durham ,Halifax,Cardiff and the whole of Kent:o so no shortage of opportunities .

Happy pub hunting in 2023 to you all.

That seems a good plan. Thanks for posting that link, I remember looking at it years ago but never really studied it. I'm surprised how many there are near me that I have been in. I will have a look when I am on my travels if there are any nearby I could tick off.
I am also amazed that I have 5 of the 12 guide books! Although they seem to be earlier printings!! Perhaps I should try and pick up the others...

Could we make it a sticky or a link somewhere? Do we have a 'useful links' menu somewhere?

New year ,new challenge but I too doubt whether I will top the 2022 total of 251.

Just 216 new visits for me, but almost all purpose built pubs.

I'm going to concentrate on Camra's Pub Heritage list (https://pubheritage.camra.org.uk/), and not bothering too much about whether I've been there before.

I'm concentrating on doing London's heritage pubs; I don't want something to close only for me to wonder why I never got round to visiting it.

Slow start to the year,

My slowest start in living memory, only 18 pub visits in total featuring 10 pubs and just 6 new ones.
It's not looking like speeding up anytime soon either.

Bucking Fastard

January got off to a decent start with 18 new pub visits.

February looking quieter, might pick up some new ticks in Sheffield but otherwise a focus on London heritage given boating is in an area well covered over the years.

A very good start to the year with 43, helped by blunt opposition to the 'give up everything for January' brigade.

A steady start with just 10 new visits in the first 5 weeks. That said, it keeps me on my 2 per week target.

Visited the Tamworth Tap yesterday as part of an impromptu visit to one of best mates who buried his mum on Tuesday nearby. Nowt wrong with the place but I nearly preferred the Market Vaults across the road, except for one reason. The playlist. I was born in the 80s but have an affinity to the 60s thanks to parents playing (Manchester) Piccadilly radio.

I recall The Hollies, Everly Brothers, Tommy James, Rolling Stones and more similar but not their usual tracks. This however should not be the main point of a pub critique and to be honest I found the beer a bit adequate.

Nothing will ever live up to the Grocers in Cadishead unfortunately!

(Also visited Sheriff of Tamworth for the first time and embarrassed ourselves at the Kings Ditch)

These are often the quietest days of the week; I avoid exploring new pubs on these days as many are closed or have arbitrary opening hours.

I got it in my mid-20s and it went undiagnosed for over nine years, completely scuppering my career and severely crippling my knees. However, I've been on Alopurinol since '04 and have lived an entirely normal - by my standards - life since; it's not an issue for me.

Sorry to hear that Will, do you get regular gout episodes? I'm a sufferer myself though, touch wood, I haven't had a bad one for quite a while.
I tend to take naproxen if I feel an attack coming on and used to try a natural 'preventive' from goutcare (https://www.goutcare.co.uk/gout-care.html#:~:text=GC%20is%20absorbed%20into%20the% 20body%20to%20aid,the%20blood%20supply%2C%20avoidi ng%20the%20inevitable%20crystal%20formation.), though probably not consistently enough to decide whether it worked or not.
I note the later advice here regarding allopurinol, but my main medicine should be lots more water - unless it also contains hops and barley I drink hardly any, other than with my daily cocktail of tablets, thyroid, blood pressure etc

I'm a sufferer myself though, touch wood, I haven't had a bad one for quite a while.

Naproxen is an NSAID, like colchicine which I was prescribed. I had a three day course and had a few stomach pains so opted for a five day course of a steroid, which had no side effects (that I've been made aware of, so far).

I note the later advice here regarding allopurinol, but my main medicine should be lots more water - unless it also contains hops and barley I drink hardly any, other than with my daily cocktail of tablets, thyroid, blood pressure etc

Yes, I've started drinking more water than I used to. The main effect has been to wake me up three times in the night. The gout's been better this week with a short cycling trip - so perhaps dehydration is the thing.

That water mixed with hops and barley sounds good. Do I need a prescription for that?

A couple of nights in Scarborough, which is very well trodden ground still yielded another 4.

A further 2 nights in Whitby, which is pretty much untrodden added another 16.

Now over the ton to 111.

Another 4 takes me up to 44 for the year.

A really productive June with trips to London, Alcester and Burnham has got me up to 71 so far.
Well on track but there won't be much happening this month...

Crept up to 85. Looking like being one of my worst years (covid aside!). Should get past the century but don't expect much more than that!

Didn't quite make my one-a-day average at 30, but on the better side have just hit 365 for the year so target accomplished! I shall crack on, rather than having November and December off though...

I would need to visit 37 more in the final quarter of the year to reach my long term average on 200 for the year ,might be touch and go.

Managed 16 new ticks in October to reach 179 year to date. Will need to tick another 21 in two months to get to the 200 target by year end.I don't do Winfields ,but there are still a few London based 3* CAMRA listed heritage pubs to visit which might get me close.

November was productive,15 new ticks mainly in London and including some heritage ones takes the year to date total to 194.

Should now make the 200 with some heritage pubs in West London on the radar.

As of the end of November I stand on 168. I won't be making 200 but the way the year started for me I wasn't expecting to get past 100.

Been a while, but at long last – 50-up for the year. Been my first real year of returning to proper pubbing, so setting the bar for 100 next year as there have been plenty of re-visits, plus sojourns in local haunts this year. I might even make another PuG crawl.

I might even make another PuG crawl.

There's a festive collection of four here. (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?42103-Venue-for-Spring-2024-PuG-crawl-The-South&p=131710#post131710)

Update: Final score: 184. Must do better in 2024.

Finished with 225.

I'd be happpy to do a similar number in 2024, but won't be beating myself up if I don't make it. Or if I get too many!

Targets hit and missed in 2023:

Upload all 2023 reviews before the end of the year - achieved yesterday, after having been reasonably on top of things each month.
Upload all 2023 photographs before the end of the year - also achieved on the 31st of December, but only just, after having been eight months behind at one stage.
Reach 70% of all open Kent pubs reviewed - another cracking year (now 74.7%).
Reach 55% of all open Central London pubs reviewed - finally achieved after four years (was 53.4% three years ago, down to 52.8% two years ago, only back to 53.3% last year but up to 56.6% by the end of 2023 - no idea how, but must be something to do with more closures than openings) - I think I'll drop this as a target area in 2024 because I can't see me ever reaching 60%.
Reach 50% of all open West Midlands pubs reviewed - much better progress this year (now 54.7%).
Reach 30% of all open East Sussex pubs reviewed - new for 2023, and better-than-expected progress made (at 32.7%, although I'm not sure what the end of 2022 total would have been).

Ended up with 170, just one localish new pub (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/91532/) in December and one more in London (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/54297/) (and just realised I've omitted to leave a review which I shall sort shortly), having decided London was far to over populated in December and continuing rail travel shenanigans
I kept reasonably local which apart from the above new one there aren't any left I'm likely to visit for the sake of a tick.
If next year is a normal one I shall aim for 200 and take it from there.

A combination of Christmas, weather, dodgy trains and a lousy cold saw December fizzle out a bit, but the year's total was a successful 418. That did include a few confirmations on closed pubs which perhaps aren't quite proper reviews, but over 400 anyway. Lots of possibilities from my new Northern base to work on now!

Ten new ticks on December took the total for 2023 to 204 new pubs, and pretty much my long term average.

Final scores are in - 437.

Thanks mainly to the beak letting me off two weeks worth of jury duty, which gave me free time to bag 66 pubs!
