I am getting a bit dismayed by the amount of reviews that seem like they are the landlords but don't mention it. No problem with landlords posting, but I think they should mention they are landlords.

In their defence before I get this going, it would be better for them if we had clear guidelines up.

Anyways, decided to try and have a bit of fun with it, so a starter for 10, is this reviewer the landlord of the pub?

Good man, enjoy your drinks.

More than happy to out any reviews, as long as we include the standard disclaimers that clearly we don't know, but it kind of looks like it :)

My guess is he is not the landlord, for a start only 3 stars not the usual 4

And checking licensee I see she is Ms Penelope Jane Trowbridge

That is a very nice find! Always interesting to see what local government licensing information is out there.

In this particular case we have a feeling that the reviewer may have been an agent working on behalf of the pub. A little bit of searching traced us back to a site called pubrescue.com which seems to specialise in helping out pubs.

As to the 3 out of 4 star rating, it is not uncommon for ones that we suspect of being the licensee but who aren't up front about it to leave a rating of 3. Take the outed owner of The Downgate (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/1425/) in Hungerford for example! ;)

At least the ones who are open about their connection tend to just leave 4 star ratings!

Ten days apart, Emma slags it off, then ten days later Caroline gives it four stars and raves over it

makes one wonder if it is the same place

I know which one I think is the unvarnished truth

Feel a bit personal about this as I added it originally & took photos. If I could stand wine bars I would go along myself to sample it

Ah yes, I did notice those rather opposing reviews going by and wondered if you might spot them!

Emmas rant about the place did make me smile though, the TV made it seem more like a pub than a wine bar - I was wondering if that was supposed to be a bad thing!! ;)

To be honest though I suspect Emma should've calmed down a bit before writing a review and Caroline may well be connected with the venue. Hopefully the fact that everyone can see they've both left only 1 review is a good hint that neither review can be entirely trusted.
