Well it was a strange evening in The Baum last night.

The usual 5 cask ales + a real cider all well kept and all but one were poor.

Little Valley Two Lads was weak & wishy washy and had a strange taste.

Little Valley Dutch Courage tasted of very little at all.

I have never found a single beer brewed by Little Valley that has been great.

Cottage Licensed To Chew was also a bit thin with an unusual aftertaste.

Marston's Royal Ryder was better and tasted fine, but was rather on the sweet side for me.

Both the landlord Simon, and myself ended up drinking the ever reliable Phoenix Pale Moonlight having tried all the others.

I really, really hope that none of these win BOTW or I will have had a seriously crap week. :D

Do I not recall mention that another 3 pumps were to be installed?

Do I not recall mention that another 3 pumps were to be installed?

There's been 6 for quite a while now. There used to be 3 at the front and two round the side of the bar.

The two at the side were difficult to see and therefore whatever beer was on them didn't sell as well as the ones at the front.

The two at the side are still there but aren't used, so in reality there are 8.

An extra bank of three were installed with Tony Allen at Phoenix shelling out for one of them as part of a deal to sell a rotating Phoenix beer.

It was always planned to try a real cider or perry and it's selling really well (£3 for a pint of 7.5%+ loopy juice, so I'm not surprised)

Trade is still increasing and so all 6 handpumps are now used all week.

In the past only 3 plus the cider were on Sunday - Wednesday once the weekend extra 2 had sold out.

Extension to the conservatory is the next up and coming event.

It's all going rather well at the moment.

With connection to the other relevant parallel chain, my local has Davenports Summer Storm on at the moment, and although I also have no idea where it's being brewed at the moment it was a very good light coloured session beer and a few of them almost numbed the pain of watching the Spurs trying to grab defeat from the jaws of victory.
Therefore this is a strong contender unless there's a better one on for the quiz night tomorrow.

Well, the 'Dark Island' turned up again in the 'Night Jar', so I guess my BOTW is settled.:drinkup:. All aboard for a trip round the island..........

This week had a bit of a dark start for me with Nethergate Priory Mild, the excellent Leeds Midnight Bell and Mauldons Blackadder. Off to Wales tomorrow so this week's BOTW could be something unpronounceable.

Just remember that 'cwrw' means beer and you won't go far wrong...

good call there!

Another cracking pint of White Horse Guv'nor in the Nags tonight...I reckon it'll take some beating for my BotW.

Well my drinkings over for the week , unless i can sneak out on Sunday
Green Mill - Zenith
Mallinsons - Shaw Park Castle
Bobs Brewing - Golden Harvest
Beowulf - Gold Work
Elland - Space

Dissapointed by the Beowulf , very thin and not much flavour for a 5.1% , their beers are usually pretty good , the Elland was a bit of a strange taste . The other three were all exellent , a difficult choice but i think the Green Mill just shades it .

BOTW - Green Mill - Zenith

BOTW is Wainstones Sandstones tried at York festival on Thursday. So good I tried the other Wainstones beers on offer, Ironstone and Amber and for a recently started brewery they were tip top beers, but the Sandstone was the best for me.

GBG shows them under Stokesley brewery, started 2010.

BOTW - Green Mill - Zenith

And another winner for a Rochdale brewer.

It's hard living in the land of Phoenix, Pictish & Green Mill. :notworthy:

Incidently Green Mill have just moved to the old brewhouse at the Cask & Feather.

Work has prevented me getting to the pub all week except for a mini pub crawl of Reading but that was full of good beers especially in the Nags Head and even in the Monks Retreat. Lots of choice but I think I shall go for Ramsbury Showtime. Roll on Monday night when the drinking recommences.

The regulars at the Station are trying to "twin" the pub with the Pictish Brewery (its been voted best Brewery for the last 2 years by the locals) , the exchange of letters are pinned on the pub notice board and are very funny

Had a superb pint of Marble (brew ?? - 3.9%) in Cask Pub and Kitchen yesterday - that's my BotW.

Managed to get out yesterday after all; St Austell Proper Job & Thornbridge Kipling were both delicious at the George in Croydon. Hard to choose but I'll give it to Kipling, 5.2% for £1.90. 'Exceedingly good beer...' Coat!

My BOTW goes to Mellow Yellow from Caledonian Brewery, describe on the pump clip as a harvest ale and a pleasant pint supped in Crick on the way taking my son to Sheffield University for freshers week.He shows no sign of appreciating real ale:eek: but give him three years in the ale capital of the UK (IMHO) ,and lets see what he learns.
Only half a day from my winter mooring, although I will have the odd trip out up The Stort .Sadly the whole area apart from Hertford is poor on the ale front unless you like Greene King and McMullens beers:sick::sick:,so in desperation going to Cerne Abbas mini beer festival to catch up with relies and hopefully get a better BOTW next week.

Had about a dozen decent beers this week, but no clear winner. In the running were Brewdog 'Trashy Blonde', Ossett 'Quick Silver' - like a drier Excelsior, Fernandes 'Great Northern' and Fernandes 'Chocolate Stout'. The Quick Silver just shades it.

P.S. Had Rudgate 'Ruby Mild' again this week and was a bit underwhelmed. Does anybody else feel that the quality's not been quite the same since it was awarded Champion Beer?

Most enjoyable pint of the week: Midnight Porter from the Magpie Brewery, in The Swan in the Rushes, Loughborough.

Most unusual pint of the week: Black & Tan from Naylor's Brewery, in the Plough & Harrow ('spoons), Hammersmith.

Two good beers from Westerham this week-Special Bitter Ale 1965 and Progress Single Hop Varietal. Progress isn't the most assertive hop, and it took me a while to fully appreciate the floral quality of this beer.I enjoyed it, but my BOTW is the Special Bitter Ale 1965, based, apparently on the last beer brewed at the old Westerham brewery: an excellent friuty best, with a decent hoppy twang.

Not a good week for pubbing, in fact I haven't done anything beyond the local 'Spoons and my quiz pub. It pains me to say it but the most drinkable thing I have had this week (that I haven't nominated before as BotW) is the Greene King seasonal offering Bonkers Conkers.

Well it ended up being a close run thing this week with several pints of Thornbidge Kipling in the Regal Moon almost winning it.

I'm going to go for Wychwood Bountiful though, several pints of which were consumed in The Baum. A full bodied, complex red brown beer with a rather impressive.............pump clip.

A really good week beerwise in Oxfordshire. BOTW was, by a narrow margin, Brakspears Oxford Gold in the King and Queen ay Longcot, just pipping the Hobgoblin in The Fox and Hounds at Uffington. Now looking forward to a few more pints in the area.

Only one genuine contender this week, although that's not to say that it wouldn't have prevailed in a stronger week - Kelham Island 45rpm as tried in the George, Croydon.

I don't generally get on with Wychwood beers but was offered a sample of Bountiful at Green Dragon & liked it. Had a pint, then (2 pints later) moved on to Kipling elsewhere. Bizarre, well I think so.

From my review of The Anchor, Henley on Thames last year.

The beer is good here, Brakspears Bitter and Oxford Gold...a much better pint than I'd had earlier in the day elsewhere, plus Wychwood Bountiful. I asked about the Wychwood as I'm unsure about some of their beers and I was given a taster....it was actually pretty good.

Sadly only thing I had this week on the one day I could drink was a few Pints of Caledonian Deuchars IPA 3.8% And a few Pints of St Austell Proper Job 4.5% ABV.
The St Austell Proper Job won by a Mile too be my beer of the week..

P/s Again this week Ive got too wait till Friday as I'm on Late Duty's till Thursday night then I'm off for long weekend when I will make up for lost time.

Plenty of booze consumed last week, but little of particular interest, sadly, with 19 pints sunk over a 4-day period.

San Miguel x 4
Guinness x 7
Young’s London Gold x 1
Brains SA Gold x 1
Hogs Back TEA x 1
Butcombe Brewery Bitter x 1
Sharps Doom Bar x 4
Gordon's Gin & Tonic Water [double measure] x 2
Shot of Tequila x 1

BOTW: Sharp's Doom Bar
