View Full Version : Pubs Galore Autumn 2022 Midlands Pub Crawl.

We normally have a pub crawl in October,so I thought it worthwhile to start the conversation about where in " The Midlands" this should take place.I don't want to stir up the Geography Galore debate ,but where do people fancy going ?

I'm sure we will come up with a long list on which we can vote. The choice of venue may also help inform the Friday/Saturday decision on which a seperate vote for the date will then take place.

An idea from me would be Burton upon Trent. There are six 2022 GBG listed pubs, besides which there are 3 other micro pubs,a micro brewery tap and the bar at the National Brewery Centre. So lots of options, and many other traditional pubs that may be off piste targets too.

Any other suggestions ?

Burton is a good shout.

Stoke's also a decent proposition; though somewhat more spread-out. Would Kings Lynn count as South or Midlands?

I think there was a list somewhere of all the places PuG trips have done, anyone able to locate it?

That's an interesting call.Unless there is some hugely knowledgeable PuGer about buses in SoT,maybe we would need to hire a minivan and driver to get around the pubs in the town of Stoke,Longton,Hanley,Etruria and Burslem. Some historic pubs, top boozers and great ale awaits. (I have discounted Newcastle under Lyme as that was tackled quite recently.)

East of England and may be very tricky for some to reach.

https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/24449/ counted as a 'crawl'. I suppose the bar alone could count as one.

Are we still doing the Aqualung Walthamstow Beer Mile Memorial Crawl?

I have little midlands experience outside of Brum, Leicester and Rugby, Burton is a decent shout (I've done four pubs there and none were too shabby), I did raise the possibilty of Lincoln with Nev last night in the Nags, but have no real solid grounding on whether it's up to it or not.

Lincoln is like two towns, the hilly one (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/areas/lincoln-central/lincolnshire/) and the flat one (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/areas/lincoln-south/lincolnshire/). I haven't looked into the buses, but when I was there earlier this year we got a bus out to this one (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/79048/), and the route took us past Lincoln cathedral. (The bus station is opposite the railway station and in the flat, low-lying part of town; the cathedral is on top of the hill.) There are probably other buses that do the same. If we go for Lincoln, Plus Bus tickets are advisable for those who don't yet qualify for free bus travel.

I used to go to Lincoln quite often with a group who all worked in the same office in the mid-00s, but some of the pubs we went to then have closed (Tap & Spile, Green Dragon) or have suffered a loss of quality in the real ales (Treaty of Commerce), or have changed hands or name or focus and are therefore somewhat unknown quantities now (Jolly Brewer, (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/21423/), Strugglers (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/21492/)).

Of course the other side of the coin is that there are new pubs: BeerHeadZ (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/86682/), Tiny Tavern (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubmap/89157/) and Imp & Angel (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubmap/84438/).

Also the thing about Lincoln is that it's on the same latitude as Sheffield* (https://www.latlong.net/category/cities-235-15.html), and therefore in the North! #geographygalore!

*not to mention Salford and Liverpool.

Stoke's also a decent proposition; though somewhat more spread-out.

I've mentioned a Stoke crawl I'm doing soon - looks likely to be Friday, 2nd September - on this thread on Beer & Pubs Forum (https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/beerandpubs/viewtopic.php?p=8825#p8825). It doesn't aim to be comprehensive or "the best of the Five Towns", just a list of (hopefully current but quite possibly former) Bass pubs in a reasonably tight area - basically Hanley and Northwood, to the NE of the station. (If only we had access to a crawl map app, I could demonstrate how tight the circuit is.) Here's a Google maps attempt, in two parts (because there's a maximum of stopping points which is lower than my 13 pubs) and shown as all walking, because I don't think you can mix buses and walking in one map.

I think I mentioned somewhere in one of these threads that Lichfield and Tamworth would make a good double header. I've not been to Lichfield for quite a few years, and then we went because Luton Town had a game in Tamworth but we wanted to try some different pubs. Since then, Tamworth has improved a bit, and the transport links between the towns are pretty easy.

Yes, Burton works well and is relatively easy to get to, being placed almost midway between Tamworth on the west coast main line and Derby on the east.

I did a crawl there with the Beer & Pubs Forum people (https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/beerandpubs/burton-on-trent-trip-friday-6-march-2020-t316.html) just before the first Covid lockdown. The actual itinerary is a little difficult to discern amid all the discussion, some parts of which are a little less pertinent than others, but this is my list of pubs actually visited by me on the day, in chronological order:

Devonshire Arms (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/34238/)
Brews of the World (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/88651/) (was keg only but now has cask too)
Anchor (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/34199/)
Burton Bridge Inn (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/34221/)
Elms (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/34241/)
Barley Mow (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/72861/)
Dog (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/67242/)
Leopard (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/34259/)
Coopers Tavern (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/34227/)
Roebuck (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/34286/)
Weighbridge (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/83521/)

One or two of my choices were spur-of-the-moment wild cards, and I'm sure we can do better with a bit more planning. Some of the crawl went to the Derby Inn (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/34236/), which has since closed down, and had lunch at the National Brewery Centre (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/75058/). On the plus side, the Royal Oak (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/34289/) in the town centre has changed hands and acquired a reputation for cask beer. We missed the Last Heretic (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/84121/) and the Fuggle & Nugget (now Beeropolis) (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubreviews/83524/) mostly because of a prediliction for "proper pubs", but also because of opening times not being conducive. (I went to the Weighbridge after everyone else had caught their trains, if I recall correctly - it's another late opener.)

Edit: I've just seen this on the Weighbridge's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057584283863): a list of pubs on the Burton Ale Trail at the beginning of September. One or two of them might be a little bit too much of a walk for some (Alfred (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/34277/), Burton Town Brewery (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/90358/)), but as there are 15 pubs listed, a little trimming wouldn't go amiss.

When I visited The Last Heretic it was open at 11.00 am, it was a Saturday( on my way back from Sheffield as it Happens) and I think also due to the fact Burton were playing at home that day, nontheless it was very optune.

Wasn't Steve Gann going to work out a route, or have I got that confused with something else?

Yes. I think he put together a route around E postcodes, which are largely a mystery to me outside Hackney or Tower Hamlets, which weren't Aqualung's natural habitat.

There's a fair amount of walking required to get to the GBG listed pubs, some of the micros are in suburban shopping centres too.Opening times may also be an issue,as 4pm openings during the week are quite common. There are probably 6 in the city centre worth doing( before tackling the outliers) ,including a dutch barge (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/54679/).

That's a good point. Time flows onwards, so we could do with making a decision on both location and date. Is it possible to set up two polls on one thread? Or if not, could someone with the know-how please set up two polls?

It looks like we've got these possible locations:

1) Burton upon Trent
2) Stoke (aka the Five Towns (https://www.arnoldbennettsociety.org.uk/the-five-towns/): Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke and Longton; or is it Six Towns (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-23163683)? Can someone set up a poll....)
3) Kings Lynn
4) Lincoln
5) Lichfield & Tamworth
6) Peterborough
....and I'll just mention 7) Newark, which has appeared on one of these threads before but has never made it through the poll, despite its good pubs and fast connections on the east coast main line.

...and these possible dates in October:

Saturday, 1st
Friday, 7th
Saturday, 8th
Friday, 14th
Saturday, 15th
Friday, 21st
Saturday, 22nd
Friday, 28th
Saturday, 29th

Well the polls have closed and the decision is Burton on Friday 14th October.

Hopefully that gives a decent amount of time to book tickets, etc.

I'm sure there will be lots of suggestions about where to visit. The choice of a Friday does mean that the two micropubs near the station will both open later in the afternoon ; Last Heretic (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/84121/) at 3pm,Weighbridge (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/83521/) at 4pm according to What Pub,so maybe worth considering them as venues towards the end of the crawl as we head back towards the station.

However an upside of choosing a Friday is that this is the only day when the Tower Brewery Tap (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/84925/) opens (from 4pm til midnight).

I believe it's 14 days notice... but the rail company will fully refund tickets if there is strike action.

Doing all 16 pubs would involve quite a bit of walking, but by splitting the second half into two options (and missing out a couple of pubs in each) we can limit the walk to just over four miles altogether. There are probably better ways of splitting the pubs, for example we could make the National Brewery Centre, the Elms, the Tower Brewery and the Burton Town Brewery entirely optional (or wild cards), thereby reducing the distance for those who give those four a miss.

Good work Will, I need to do a bit more investigation as as my days of 16 pubs in a session are probably now behind me :nishelypished: plenty of food for thought though.

I don't get involved really until decision made, and we will be on our way home from Nottingham beer festival on Friday 14 Oct but if anything scuppers us getting to that, we could possibly make it.

We enjoy Burton, and have done a couple of their ale trails getting round most of the pubs on your list, and plan to do their net one on Friday 2 Sept before going to Sheffield on Sat 3 Sept to do the West Bar fest in Shakespeare, Crow and Bar Stewards.

One or two of these might be a little bit too much of a walk for some - the Alfred and the Elms are the farthest flung - but there are 16 pubs in this list so a little trimming wouldn't go amiss. All but six are said to open at 12 noon. As has been mentioned previously in this thread, aiming to finish near the station for the late opening Last Heretic and Weighbridge would seem to be a good idea. Either the Roebuck or the Devonshire might make a good meeting point, being about five minutes from the station and open at noon.

This is a good long list of 16 and the opening times are very useful. If we are looking to trim this list, the recent reviews for The Alfred and The Crossing may point to these as being wild cards and I agree about the Alfred and The Elms being out on a limb and more difficult to work into a crawl route.

The good thing about Burton is that it is not huge and pretty much level,so the remaining 13 could be possible ,especially if the late opening pubs namely Tower Brewery Tap,Burton Bridge Inn,Last Heretic and Weighbridge are all tackled after 4pm on a route back to the station.Should mean being around the station area around 6pm ,which is often the sort of time folk start to depart.

Although I didn’t vote for this date I hope to make this one. But it is dependent on us getting back from Crete on the Wednesday night.
If I do it will be option A for me.
Have checked the opening times with web sites where available and Google maps. All in agreement except for Beeropolis where Google maps have 4.00pm and The Burton Bridge Inn where both the pub website and Google maps has 5.00pm which could cause a problem..

Thanks for doing that, Steve. It was sitting on my to do list for a long time, never quite making it to the top.

Burton Bridge Inn's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/BurtonBridgeInn/) has 5pm through the week but 4pm Friday.

I'm just coming for the day ,and arrive in Burton at 11.20 am.My departure is 19.41 so lots of time to survey the pub scene.

Taking a convoluted route viz Hertford North-Stevenage-Grantham -Nottingham - (via Derby) Burton so hoping the connections work and no strikes.

The 14th is currently spared...

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-62999136

More than 40,000 workers from Network Rail and 15 train operators will strike again on 8 October, their union says.

The RMT said it would be "effectively shutting down the railway network" as part of a long-running dispute over pay, jobs and conditions.

It will come just a week after an even bigger strike by members of RMT and the train drivers union Aslef, which will leave just 10% of UK services running.

A smaller Aslef strike is also planned on 5 October.

With two weeks to go to our tour of Burton on Trent I thought it might be useful to have some idea of the walking distances between pubs. As has been mentioned, this is not a big town, but with the Elms across the river and the two new brewery taps quite a bit to the north, there will need to be choices made. The original list was 16 pubs, which might be more than some would want to attempt, and taking other comments into account I have included some pointers for where more or fewer pubs can be chosen.

I hope this will be helpful. (For those who would like to print out a copy for framing, there is a pdf attached.)

Thanks for the map, Jim. I think I read in the small print that the total distance is 8.2 miles for all 16 venues, which is why I think my pdf will be useful for helping people to decide which of those they are going for.

And as for chaotic free-for-alls, I think there was a vote on one of the crawls - maybe you missed it? - and the majority were in favour of chaos. (A bit like the Conservative party, really.)

Hope you feel better soon, and that you did your leg in during an amazing event rather than something mundane like putting on your socks. This is how I put my back out for 2 weeks earlier this year.

Thanks all. It's been a bit gyppy for a while but only came on sometimes after a period of prolonged standing. However since I came back from Pembrokeshire it now also kicks in when I'm walking. Oddly, it generally fades quite quick after I've sat down but once on my hind legs again it reappears.

Seen a physio, got some exercises to do at home for three weeks - one week in and no discernable improvement (but I suppose we have the 'pain before gain' bit to work through first, right?). Told to avoid longer walking 10+ mins and stairs. Easier said than done when you walk to work and have 2x sets of stairs in the house!!

Even more annoying as I'm supposed to be going to Bath soon with a mate. Might suggest we get a taxi to the top of the hill and then mosey downwards with very regular stops... ;)

I have a few pals attending this year's Autumn crawl from Belper in Derbyshire. They are all very respectable and run RuRAD, Rural Real Ale Drinkers, if this is permissible - plus they are all fully vaccinated ;)

Peter - Bald Eagle
Kev - Clockwork Kev
Paul - Charisma Bypass
and one of their pal's named the Diddler

Hope this is ok,

Of course it is, shaping up to be a mega crawl.

Myself & Tammy should be there, though having failed to make the previous two not quite believing it until I make it.

I've made a version of the crawl that I think I might aim to follow (although always end up changing plans throughout the day)
https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pub-crawl-planner/view-crawl.php?uuid=2cf9da01-bb30-4ec3-a4b7-ba7a113ad74c

From that page it should be possible for everyone to create a clone of the crawl and make your own version. When you get to an edit page you can drag the pubs on the right hand side of the screen up or down to alter the order of the crawl. To drag them grab onto the three horizontal lines in each pub box.

It is nowhere near as sophisticated as I'd like but I keep promising this sort of feature and never manage to produce it, so focussed on getting bare minimum done. Hope you can get it to work!

As those pub crawl pages don't work very well on mobile I've created another page.

So if you go to https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pub-crawl-planner/ it should give you either my version of the crawl or if you are logged in and have cloned it then it should show your version.

If you then go into the browser options and select 'Install App' it will put a shortcut on your phone that will launch the map in full screen.

Great to see everyone yesterday, impressive turnout
In the cold light of a bright Burton morning my final tally for the day was 12 pubs.
Pub of the day: Although I really enjoyed The Burton Bridge Inn and the Tower Bridge Tap room is one of the best small brewery taps, if not the best, I have ever visited, it’s difficult to look any further than the Coopers Tavern.
Beer of the day is a tough one as there was so many good ones. I really liked the Grapefruit Pale Ale in the Royal Oak, the Dancing Duck Dark in the Crossing and the Wilde Childe Brownie Hunter in the Last Heretic, but probably the Joules Moon Madness Mild in the Coopers shades it.
Hope to get to the Elms and the Weighbridge Inn today which I missed out on yesterday

Ahh looks like a great turn-out. I've been vicariously living the crawl off the back of the reviews that have already made it up.

Some good news from down here, my first appointment with the osteopath has seen a mild improvement. Fingers crossed we'll make some solid positive progress towards getting me on the mend for Christmas. I apparently have a 'surprising' amount of leg strength but also a 'surprising' lack of movement in part of my lower vertebrae which has been zoned-in on as the cause (due to a nerve which goes from there all the way down the leg to the foot).
