Some of you may remember my cry of pain 10 years ago when the Bath Hotel (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/43051/) was leased by Thornbridge Brewery. They say that good things come to those who wait, and I've been waiting long enough, but they gave up the lease about two weeks ago, and the owner of the pub has taken it back on after a quick refurb. I was in there this afternoon and it was like coming home!

I quite liked it under Thornbridges stewardship, but a bit of variation is always a good thing.

I know you did, and so did some other reviewers on this site. I'm not saying you were wrong to like it, of course. But when you go in a pub two or three times a week you get to know it in a way that is different from what we observe as once-in-a-lifetime pub tickers. When Thornbridge went in they didn't just put their own beers in, they took out the John Smiths Smooth, the Carling and Fosters, and even the Tetleys that had been on the bar since the days of Allied Breweries: this immediately kicked out about a dozen regular customers. So when I went in, there was not only different beer and different staff, there were none of the regulars I had got used to seeing over more than a decade.

Also they always had a member of staff occupying the section of bar counter in the drinking corridor, which had been used as such from 1931 until 2012 - doing something on a lap-top and blocking it from use by customers. Today I stood to drink my pint at that shelf once more, and got more enjoyment from it as a consequence.

When Thornbridge went in they didn't just put their own beers in, they took out the John Smiths Smooth, the Carling and Fosters, and even the Tetleys :confused::confused::confused: , OK I do actually get it. :D

Of course you do. But Thornbridge didn't. They thought that either the old customers would welcome the chance to drink German lagers with names they couldn't pronounce, or they could just f*** off. I don't think they ever did work out why it was so quiet. By focusing on the student market they had to constantly rebuild their customer base, and I don't think they were very good at it.

Went in there on my 6oth birthday crawl.Guy said 2 of my crowd were too drunk to serve (they weren't they were just boisterous) so we got barred.We went in for the German beers.

I was planning to go there on my 60th too! I was too drunk to make it, though - well, it was going to be the last pub of the night and I'd been drinking since lunchtime. Maybe I'll be there for my 70th. :eek:
