View Full Version : New pub visits 2022

Almost time to start again !

Lets hope the coming year is easier for us to tick off those new pubs but I really don't know how it will play out.

I'm not really thinking of a target but I will aim for a conservative 104 ( 2 a week ). Should be a doddle if we don't lock down again!

Likewise lets hope we've seen the back of lockdowns.

I'm gunning for 200 new pub visits in 2022,back to my usual average from 2014 to 2019.

PuG crawls help a lot,Preston and Winchester are virgin territory for me.I'm going up to Glasgow to catch up with an old drinking colleague and that's all new to me too.

Boating in the East of England with the aim of crossing The Wash (with a pilot) will also throw up unvisited territory, but random walks in London are more challenging if I want to get rewarded with decent cask ale.Maybe time to grow a beard and drink keg ;)

Hoping to kick off our new pubs in Exeter later this month. Have a couple of nights away booked for the beer festival, and it is virgin territory for pubs, so hoping for a good weekend.

Have Blackpool booked for Fleetwood fest but get round there too often for new pubs. Bit nervous about booking anything else away till we know what restrictions may be looming, but expect to manage some day trips out on the train if allowed.

I had planned to go to Gainsborough to watch Matlock Town at Trinity, but the match was called off. A pity, because there were a couple of new pubs for me to do there. I couldn't summon up enough enthusiasm for the one hour train journey in the absence of football, so stuck on a big fat zero.

Hoping that Hallam FC's game at Hall Road Rangers in Hull is still on this Monday, as I have five or six ticks planned.

Not quite the correct thread, but did I read recently that there was now a pub worth visiting in Telford... or did I dream that?
Just wondering about a startpoint to get to Ironbridge and/or Bridgenorth..?
Thanks guys

Not heard of anything much in central Telford, although there are some in the old places subsumed by the Telford area. The no 8 bus runs from the bus station (near the Spoons) to Ironbridge and on to Bridgnorth, but is not hugely frequent. Telford Central railway station is about 15 mins walk or a local bus ride away.

If going direct to Bridgnorth, Wolverhampton is better.

Managed to tick seven new pubs in Cottingham, Hull and Goole last Monday. A trip to London planned towards the end of January, plus trips to Featherstone and Bradford (for Leeds Rhinos pre-season games) and to Retford (another Hallam FC match) should get me a few more ticks. January last year was lockdown, of course, but January 2020 I got 40 new pubs ticked. Can't see me getting anywhere near, but will give it a go.

Finally got 2022 under way. I am not setting myself any specific targets this year but will again try and fit in visits to some of our under-reported areas, Covid permitting. The reduced train and bus services are a bit of hindrance at present but hopefully will gradually improve.

We enjoy the Sommar pubs too. Only had 1 new one so far this year, Vagabond just up from the Wellington in Birmingham. Went to check it out and found there were some self service taps in there. Another with self service taps is Auto Brew in Digbeth. They were not open when I was down there, but I was let in to have a look, and will go to check properly another day. Off to Exeter to do the beer festival and some pubs this weekend. New place for us so hope to add some to our total.

Surprised myself with 52 for the month, including 19 over three days in London this week. That would have been 20, but I realised as soon as I walked into the Star Tavern in Belgravia that I had been there before, with some of my Luton Town mates, back in the days when I didn't write pub visits down in notebooks.

A fair start at 34, helped by coming out of retirement and taking a - what are they called? - oh yes, job, in Bath. What's been really interesting is that I'm visiting lots of pubs previously reviewed by others such as Blackthorn, Aqualung (pbuh) and others, so it's interesting seeing how they've changed since the flu thing.

Trebled my tally to 6 after visits on Saturday to Hallamshire House (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/43199/), Closed Shop (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/43099/) and Blake Hotel (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/43068/), and on Sunday to (i think) Rose & Monkey (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/25791/), though things were a little hazy when I reached the latter, for obvious reasons. Smithfield was empty and others wanted something more lively.

The 3 new Sheffield pubs were very good, in an area of the city not previously on my map, so thanks, Will, for mentioning the Blake Hotel which took me up there.
And I bumped into ob back at Sheffield tap, who was his usual laid-back self when saying not to worry about my Stockport train (in 7 mins) as that gave me 3 or 4 mins to drink up...

...making my May total 73 and year to date 266. Aiming for 500 for the year, and expect to slow down at some point and attempt to finish on exactly that if I can.

A slow start to June, with just 22 new pubs in the first half of the month, and with a holiday in Scotland and the Lake District (23rd to 29th) I knew I would have to pull my finger out. Five in the Rotherham suburbs followed by seven in Nottingham set me up for my hols, when I did a surprising 23 new pubs, including five out of six in Moffat (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/areas/moffat-town/dumfries-galloway/) (the other one had closed early because "with the emphasis on food now, everyone had gone home and we've had no one in for 45 minutes" - this at 21:45), three in Dunfermline and four in Kirkcaldy.

Prize tick, and quite unexpected, was the Stanley Arms at Calderbridge (near the entrance to the Sellafield nuclear processing works) (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/66405/), a pub I have cycled or driven past about 20 times and never found it open. On this occasion it was 15:05 as I drove through this small village on the A595 and the pub had opened at 15:00. In my haste I drove into the wrong car park and had to back out again pronto. Luckily I was still sober. Review will follow.

Now on 326, and can relax with only 174 to do in the next six months. I can't see how I will be able to stick on exactly 500 though.

Another slow start to the month with just eight visits to new pubs in the first 23 days of July! Made up for this with a trip to Wharfedale and Airedale - 18 in five days - and finished off with five yesterday before and after the first Hallam FC game of the season, away at Knaresborough Town. So 23 in eight days, and 31 for July, a neat average of exactly one per day.

1) Upload all 2022 reviews before the end of the year - hit on 30th of December.
2) Upload all 2022 photographs before the end of the year - missed by a mile, having only reached mid-July by Hogmanay.
3) Reach 60% of all open Kent pubs reviewed - hit clear out of the ground (now 66.1%).
4) Reach 55% of all open Central London pubs reviewed - badly missed for the third year running (was 53.4% two years ago, down to 52.8% last year and only back to 53.3% by the end of 2022 - something to do with the mix of reviewed closures and unreviewed new openings).
5) Reach 45% of all open West Midlands pubs reviewed - some swifter progress this year (now 48.9%).
