I suppose The Bartons Arms (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53682/) is too far out to include?

I did this a few years ago with the guys from the Beer & Pubs Forum. There are buses that get you there pretty quickly, and back again. I left the rest of the group at the Woodman (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37969/), walked to Corporation Street to catch a bus (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Albert+St,+Birmingham+B5+5LG/The+Bartons+Arms,+High+Street,+Aston,+Birmingham/@52.487356,-1.912017,14z/data=!3m1!5s0x4870bcbcc80a51bd:0x8633e85a8815f0c4! 4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x4870bc847039eb5d:0xdbd19ecf0 f040126!2m2!1d-1.8867921!2d52.4817388!1m5!1m1!1s0x4870bcbcb874f65 9:0xe33f76f41611aa13!2m2!1d-1.8951913!2d52.4991478!3e3), and arrived at the Bartons Arms 25 minutes after leaving the Woodman. I rejoined the group at the (now sadly demolished) Eagle & Tun (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37530/) 15 minutes after leaving the Bartons Arms.

It would be a shame to omit it, since it is an anniversary and was here that the group pic was taken 10 years back... Ah, memories of Gill herding us onto buses in groups of five (for discount fares)...

Yeah, but this is the Autumn 2020 Pubs Galore Crawl in the same sense (and for the same reason) that this year we had the Euros 2020 football tournament and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

So it was 11 years ago.

Not long until my Oyster60 card for free (for a small one-off payment) travel in the capital, and my senior railcard will be not far behind, whoop-whoop!!

Re the 10/11 year anniversary, I did wonder whether a fellow-pedant may raise the issue but, for heaven's sake Will, it's not like an apostrophe error or suchlike!!

It's still the 10th Anniversary, but the group picture outside the Bartons Arms was taken (almost) 11 years ago! You can't argue with the passage of time. ;)

I couldn't convince my good lady of another weekend in Brum (done it for two years before the pandemic for the Yonex all England Badminton) or the virtues of the Bull Ring, especially as shes shopped it before and now it is John Lewis lite, so will be making a day of it by train..
Have got the cheep advanced tickets for the 10.15AM out of Euston to New Street and the 20.14pm back out of BNS if any of the London crowd want to sync up travel arrangements..

Surely if there's a discount for five, then anyone with a brain would grab four other willing souls at the bus stop and form a discount alliance. Do we need cash for the charabanc or will it take e-money?

I think that's what the Pubs Galore crowd were doing in 2010, under Gill's tutelage. However, 11 years later there are probably enough of us with free bus passes to scupper this idea. And plucking four random passengers from the queue to form an alliance requires you to then stay together all day. Any takers?

Do we need cash for the charabanc or will it take e-money?

Don't all buses take card payments these days? Anyway, buying a Plus Bus ticket when you get your trains sorted is probably the cheapest way.

Can I suggest we visit The Bartons Arms reasonably early in the crawl while we are relatively sober otherwise it will be like trying to herd cats as the day progresses and it would be a shame for anyone who hasn't been there to miss out.We also need local knowledge about where exactly in the city centre to catch said bus. This might then define the crawl meeting place (traditional 'spoons KO anybody ?) and maybe some of the initial crawl targets.

For info on the Bartons Arms discussion, here is the bus gen; The buses are National Express West Midlands 33/51 to Walsall/Pheasey from Lower Bull Street/High Street stop BS16 (down the road from the Peaky Blinder (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubmap/37846/) bar to see on a map). They jointly run every 5 mins, journey time about 7 mins to Burlington Street, 2 mins from the pub.
Note that the starting point might be subject to change due to ongoing tram extension works (needs checking nearer the time).

The current fare appears to be £2.40 single, £4 day ticket, £7 group day ticket for up to 5 people. Twerly passes valid after 09.30. Mobile app tickets available and cash & contactless accepted on the bus.

Aarggh! I now realise this follows my visit to pubs and beer-fest in Nottingham 14th, and 15th is traditional 'de-brief' day.
Too old and weak to make Brum as well, so it is with deep regret that I shall be unable to make the anniversary photo (be it 10th or 11th, Will!), properly gutted!
I look forward to belatedly enjoying the day vicariously, via the prize-writing of our inimitable band...

Just to get the ball rolling on which pubs might await us:

There is a very tight cluster of city centre pubs worth considering possibly both before and after visiting the Bartons Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53682/)*

Briar Rose (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/54984/)* . If there is demand for breakfast and the traditional 'spoons PuG start
Head of Steam (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/85963/)
Wellington (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37946/)*
Old Joint Stock (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55708/)*
Colmore (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/86905/)
Pure Craft (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/81554/)
Post Office Vaults (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/56393/)

I've never visited the Jewellery Quarter ,so maybe others could suggest any names worth considering. There would then be an interesting canalside walk :o from there to a bit of an outlier

Craven Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37562/)

But it is on the way (with more walking) to Digbeth for

Lamp Tavern (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37696/) *
Spotted Dog (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37864/)
Anchor (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37449/) * .... and within reasonable striking distance of the railway stations.

* Pubs that were visited by the 2010 crawl.

The Jewellers Arms (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37683/) in the Jewellery Quarter is a Black Country Ales pub which is worth a visit. Burning Soul Taproom (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/85337/) and Rock & Roll Brewhouse (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/88821/) are nearby but the opening hours are not too good on a Friday. 3pm and 5pm if memory serves.
If you are walking the canal to the Craven Arms you have the Tap & Spile (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37884/) and the Canalside Cafe (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/56391/) en route.

If you are moving from the City centre to the Jewellery Quarter it is one stop on the train from Snow Hill - right by the The Old Contemptibles (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37755/).

A daytripper costs £6.90 and covers all trains, trams and buses.

Hello gang, hope ye're all grand, I had an email from the little wan telling me about this, I'm rest day the Saturday FFS but I'm working on getting the Friday instead/as well.

I will say the Bull in Price St (Gunmakers district) is now being run by Nigel from the Wellington, I don't know is it Black Country or just him but it is having very good reports from respectable correspondents. It's 5 minutes walk from where the 7 bus stops on the way back from the Bartons at Lower Loveday St. https://maps.app.goo.gl/TUG1XLBh6wUYNkmt8

Yes, that's better also because the 33 & 51 alternate from the same stop, each running every 10 mins but five minutes apart from each other, whereas the 7, from a different bus stop around the corner, is every 10 minutes with no alternative if you've just missed one.

We went into the White Swan on Saturday after visiting the excellent fest run by Halton Turner brewery in their tap room round the corner, and Nige from the Welly served us Little Critters Raspberry Blonde and Neepsend Cariban. There were certainly a lot more beers on. The White Swan is worth a visit.

There are so many good pubs in Birmingham that our problem will be which ones to leave out ! Folk are already asking about meeting places and timings of visits ,so how about this for an outline plan of the core pubs to be visited ? They all have a good ale reputation ,and many have noteable features and character.
There is lots of scope for going off piste along the way .

Wellington (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37946/) Gather here from noon until everyone has arrived, then move to the 33/51 bus stop.( Briar Rose (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/54984/) is a good option for 'spoons breakfast prior to The Wellington)

Bartons Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53682/) Soupy asked when we will arrive,I guess a little after 1pm.Photo opportunity here like the last time !

Bull (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37517/) On the way back to the city centre.
Gunmakers Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37650/) Close to The Bull.

Old Joint Stock (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55708/)
Colmore (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/86905/)
Post Office Vaults
(http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/56393/) These last three are close together.

Craven Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37562/)

Lamp Tavern (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37696/) this is around 15 minutes walk from The Craven Arms.

Spotted Dog (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37864/)
White Swan (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55712/)
Anchor
(http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37449/) These last three are close together and New Street is about 10 minutes walk from The Anchor.

This is just a suggestion ,lets knock it into shape if there are better options.

Well done for dipping your toe in the water!

Just a thought (and I haven't looked into this very deeply): The Bull and the Gunmakers are not far from the Wellington.

Then (this is a bit radical): Is the Bartons Arms that good a pub? I know it's an iconic building, but I wasn't right impressed beerwise. And it's a bit out on a limb. Anyone who hasn't been, or who desperately wants to go again, could add it in place of a couple of others somewhere in the schedule.

Looking at the map, and remembering slightly pissed attempts to find New Street station in the past, might it not be better to finish in the centre rather than in Digbeth?

Wellington

Gunmakers Arms
Bull

Spotted Dog
White Swan
Anchor

Lamp Tavern

Craven Arms

Old Joint Stock
Colmore
Post Office Vaults

There does seem to be quite a bit of walking, so I hope Gill & Ray can lend a bit of local knowledge and improve on these ideas with some helpful bus routes. Or perhaps we should be cutting out Digbeth altogether and including some more pubs north of centre (Jewellers Arms, Red Lion, Church)? (So many pubs, etc...)

Will does pose a good question........... would folk like to visit/revisit the Bartons Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53682/) ? After the earlier discussion on this thread I assumed there was demand, but it's worth checking .

There are quite a few members who like Oakham ales

Wouldn't normally comment buy, all being well, I'm aiming to attend this one.

Bartons Arms: Great pub, fantastic beer but who's got the willpower to leave? Does this rule it out?

Ha ha!

It's normally me suggesting an extra pub that's only a short bus ride away and everyone else saying, No, I think we'll stay where we are. :)

When I did the Bartons Arms in 2018 with the guys from Beer and Pubs Forum I caught up with the others by using the 51 bus (the 33 also runs from the same stop) to the Lakeside student residences which are a short walk from the Woodman and hence the other Digbeth pubs.

Although I agree the Barton's is a magnificent pub and one I've visited a few times, and I do like Oakham ales, I'll be giving this one a miss on the day, just so I can spend some extra time supping in one of the other great Brum pubs. We're spoiled for choice

Good idea! And there's the Gunmakers Arms, brewery tap for Two Towers brewery (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37650/), just around the corner from the Bull on Price Street. So that's three pubs sorted already.

I thought the idea was to go to The Bull and Gunmakers Arms after the Barton's Arms ?

That was one idea. I suggested another. Nothing is set in stone!

The point is, if doing the Bull/Gunmakers after Bartons, how do we get to the next pub and which is it to be. It seemed to me there might be better options if doing the Bull/Gunmakers first, then getting back to the city from the Bartons Arms. This is why I wanted to hear from Gill and Ray for their ideas on buses. They'll be more aware of bus routes than the rest of us, and their knowledge may help us decide where to go next. I've looked on Google Maps and it has you getting off the bus two stops early in one direction, and one stop too late in the other! Local knowledge is better.

The Bartons is a stunning pub with great beer. I have been many times over the years en route to the Villa. The ground is walkable from there (anybody remember The Shareholders Arms) which was over the road?
To be honest, if you have been before you are wasting a chunk of quality time to visit again. There are so many good pubs closer to the city centre. If you haven't been it is worth visiting but you could say the same about Black Eagle (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55584/) for instance.

I'm not suggesting you visit, merely pointing out that there plenty great pubs outside the city centre. There are far more closer to the city centre!

Although to be fair the Black Eagle is only 3 stops on the tram from Snow Hill and takes about 10 minutes! Downside being t is a bit isolated where it is, much like the Bartons!

That's the problem. Not a bad problem though, either way you win!

My opinion for what it's worth - If I am visiting a city that isn't familiar to me I will try to tick off as many as I can in the time I have. I will make the effort to travel out for a real gem of a pub. The Barton's certainly qualifies and it isn't that far out of town. If all else fails it would cost about £6/ £7 for 5 in a black cab.

I used to jump on the number 7 bus right by the Hen & Chickens (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55586/) and The Wolf (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/84955/).

This has been fun plotting,so here is my view which of course is adaptable to add or subtract or amend. A bit messy with replacing tram lines down Corporation St to New St at the moment and stops keep changing round Bull St, so I propose I am going to do a dummy run to check opening times - have been iffy with some opening late afternoon - and bus stops - and well I could do with an entertaining day out.

Wellington opens 10am so good meeting place.
Bartons Arms a 51 bus there, then
Bull
Gunmakers
These are close together and can be done any order. I would do Hockley next as not far to Metro from Gunmakers and get off Jewellery Quarter
Jewellers Arms
Rock n Roll
Back to Colmore Row
Old Joint Stock
Colmore
Post Office Vaults
Craven Arms

then down to

Lamp Tavern
Anchor
White Swan
Spotted Dog

I would add the Woodman here

Reckon I will enjoy a wander on Friday 1st just in the name of research of course.

I could have put the taprooms on like Dig Brew ( drinking was outside while tap room being refurbed last time we went) and Halton Turner, both in Digbeth, but not sure if you wanted tap rooms too. So many good pubs as has been mentioned. Burning Soul instead of Rock n Roll possible as just off the metro line.

I have done a work out on paper looking at the bus stops etc for getting out and back into town and will do the dummy run this week.

From Wellington, walk down to junction Carr Lane High St and get 51 or 33 to Bartons.

51 or 33 back to Lancaster St stop and cross roads to Price St for Bull.

Walk Loveday and Bath St to Gunmakers

Walk Shadwell and turn left for St Chads Metro Stop for Metro to Jewellery Quarter
or..turn right across canal to Water St stop for 16 or 74 bus to Hockley St for Jewellers Arms

If you don't want Burning Soul can go back to main road where Clifton and Church Inn are if you fancy them, and return to Snow Hill area by metro or 16 bus and continue with the town pubs.

This reminds me that the Birmingham Plus Bus ticket also covers tram fares (Adult: £3.40, Railcard holder: £2.25 (https://plusbus.info/birmingham)). Anyone else who, like me, is entitled to free bus travel, note that trams are only free for residents of West Midlands (https://westmidlandsmetro.com/tickets-all/#gotosix).

There are works going on in parts of the tram system, which are said to be scheduled for completion "by October", but whether complete or not they are still running between Bull Street and Wolverhampton. The fare is £1.50 single from St Chads to Jewellery Quarter (for Jewellers Arms, for example) but £2.40 if going as far as Soho Benson Road (for the Black Eagle, if anyone's interested). An all-day ticket is £4.80, so the £2.25 (with railcard discount) for Plus Bus is good value.

On way round so thoughts. Old Joint Stock could be done after Welly out of the back. Logic puts 51 or 33 to Price St to do Bull and Gunmakers as they are on the right side of the road off the bus, then back to get bus to Bartons. Makes sense as 33 or 51 back to town then for 16 to Jewellery Quarter and will save a lot of time. 14 on in Welly. 7 usuals and 7 guests. 3 on in Bull. Looks good so far.

In Gunmakers. 3 of theirs on.

In Bartons.. Oakham Citra and JHB plus 1 guest Titanic Plum Porter on. Other guest Fixed. Wheel ran out.

Having a couple then will head back. All on reduced wickets. May be better on a Friday though.
Trams running from Upper Bull by Square Peg JDW OK, but town really is a working mess and I cannot see it being sorted before Christmas, not October!

I have been looking at what Gill, Mobyduck and Delboy20 wrote and added/subtracted bits from Gill's original route accordingly, including that it makes sense to do Wellington/Old Joint Stock=>Bull/Gunmakers=>Bartons Arms because of where the bus stops are positioned and (as I understand it from the map) avoiding crossing roads that we wouldn't otherwise need to.

Following from the above, I have tidied this list up to look like this:

Wellington
Old Joint Stock
Bull
Gunmakers
Bartons Arms
Jewellers Arms
Burning Soul Taproom
Colmore
Post Office Vaults
Craven Arms
Lamp Tavern
Anchor
White Swan
Spotted Dog
Woodman

I make that 15 pubs, which one or two people might say is rather too many. One way of trimming them to a more manageable list is to designate a main route and wild cards. I know some people will have their own ideas about these, but just to get the ball rolling I would suggest the Old Joint Stock (magnificent building but considered rather expensive and do we all want to barge in there en mass at lunchtime on a Friday?) and Burning Soul Taproom (not everyone wants to visit taprooms).

Another consideration is that there is quite a large group (listed by Nev at #82 (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?35286-10th-Anniversary-Pub-Crawl-in-Birmingham/page9) - looks like 20), and it would make sense to split into two smaller groups where pubs are close together (like Bull and Gunmakers). And possibly aim for just one of the Post Office Vaults and the Colmore too.

I am also a bit concerned with the five pubs at the end of the list and the chances of people getting lost and missing their trains. See this map (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Post+Office+Vaults,+84+New+St,+Birmingham+B2+4BA/52.4749928,-1.9036677/52.4704519,-1.8924374/52.4744087,-1.8886358/''/''/B5+5LG,+Albert+St,+Birmingham/''/@52.481497,-1.9059718,15.29z/data=!3m1!5s0x4870bc7fd2768101:0x243fa94cddcd0c8d! 4m35!4m34!1m5!1m1!1s0x4870bc8c78a47db1:0x656ac29bf bdb8aa5!2m2!1d-1.9019389!2d52.4793539!1m0!1m0!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x487 0bc7e077848c3:0x263211dc13fbc850!2m2!1d-1.886301!2d52.4736645!1m5!1m1!1s0x4870bc7fead0907f :0xe13e7d46603a3f8b!2m2!1d-1.8830051!2d52.4735739!1m5!1m1!1s0x4870bc847039eb5 d:0xdbd19ecf0f040126!2m2!1d-1.8867921!2d52.4817388!1m5!1m1!1s0x487096f1df0e057 1:0xedfa487a0f2ea32e!2m2!1d-1.898958!2d52.477754!3e2) for the walking route from the Post Office Vaults to the next six pubs and then to New Street station - it's 3.5miles: 1hr 12m

I think by this stage such a large group will almost certainly have splintered, so it makes better sense to say that the last five pubs after the Craven Arms are optional depending on stamina and train times (e.g. short cut from Anchor to Woodman), and not make any effort to try to stick together at that stage.

Apologies to Gill if she has been doing something similar, but we haven't heard back from her since her test run on 27 September, and it's only five days until kick off.

Just to be clear: I am one of those who would say that 15 pubs is rather too many!

I did 12 pubs in Stockport last Friday, mostly halves, and when my train was cancelled I came very close to threatening a railway employee who was giving me duff info about how to get to Sheffield - he wanted me to go into Manchester and catch a train on a different line, because (in hindsight) he misread my ticket and thought it said Stafford not Sheffield. I could have got myself into a lot of trouble because my befuddled head couldn't understand why he was misdirecting me.

I reckon 10 pubs is plenty. :)

No one should feel any compulsion to visit every pub on Gill 's list ,I will probably swerve the Burning Soul tap,but the list is useful if folk need to have a rough idea where the crawlers are likely to be if they decide to linger a while longer/miss out a pub /visit somewhere off piste/pub photography missions/ and so on.

The number of pubs visited and the amount of beer consumed has to be a personal choice,so I have nothing against the route that Gill set out.

Yes, that's a useful map link. The same argument could also apply to the Spotted Dog, which I think is a less worthy pub than the Woodman (though I agree the Woodman is a bit of a trek), but that's just a personal view. I wasn't saying the Digbeth pubs should be taken off the list, merely suggesting that no one should feel that they have let themselves down, let the whole party down, let Pubs Galore down, if they don't complete the whole itinerary.

Which I think is what you're saying too!

Hi,
I am sorry but hadn't put myself down as the organiser and thought I was asked to check bus times for getting to the Barton, and that once in town we would go with the flow.

The pub list was not basically from me, it was me trying to get all the suggestions from the various posts into some sort of order. I agree that splitting between the Bull and Gunmakers, and possibly again for Post Office Vaults and Craven Arms (another that could be a wild card) may help, and the Burning Souls is down to those who want to do it. To be honest I think the White Swan in Digbeth should be on the list and maybe miss out the Jewellers Arms which is a trip out for one pub seeing as Rock and Roll not open till later.

Personally I would miss the Anchor out, fine pub but....also Old Joint Stock, maybe Craven as there are 2 Black Country Ales pubs on the list, it is down to what you want. Pubs or beer choice. You are Pubs Galore so I understand it is all about the pubs, but 20 turning up in a pub where there may be one person serving may make 2 groups more viable.

Hope this helps and I will be in the Welly early on the Friday.

Although I agree the Barton's is a magnificent pub and one I've visited a few times, and I do like Oakham ales, I'll be giving this one a miss on the day, just so I can spend some extra time supping in one of the other great Brum pubs. We're spoiled for choice

This says a lot you know. Trying to get a pub list to make so many folk happy with the running order is hard work, and Birmingham from being a virtual dessert is now becoming a place where we do it by areas, so it is hard to get the pubs everyone wants included into a list to keep everyone happy,

As a matter of interest ,is the Jewellers Arms a "must visit" pub ,I've never been ? Will the need to get there and back on public transport be rewarded ?

It's a Black Country Ales pub. I've only been there on a Saturday after football at WBA when it was difficult to form an opinion.

Really appreciate the work you've put in, Gill.

The point you made about the bus stops for the Bull and/or Gunmakers and doing those before going on the same buses to the Bartons Arms was well made.

I've been to the Jewellers Arms but not the Craven Arms, so I know which way I'm going; others can decide for themselves. But your "a trip out for one pub" is also a good point.

I think we can pick and choose amongst the Anchor/White Swan/Spotted Dog etc. I'm keen to go to the Lamp Tavern as when I was there before (about 2005?) I was a little the worse for wear and can remember nothing of it.

Thanks for reiterating my point about 20 people all turning up at once.

See you Friday! (And Ray, of course.)

I think before everyone goes into top gear running off from the Wellington, maybe we should visit the POV and the Head of Steam early, as these two pubs get very busy Fri evenings, especially the POV with such limited space downstairs.

Head of Steam could be a wild card, as it's so close to the Welly...

Went there last week for the first time since it changed hands, on an unplanned visit due to the tram system grinding to a halt, and was pleasantly surprised about the job Black Country Ales have done with the place. Certainly worth a stop if in the area.

Sorry for still not getting a proper pub crawl tool together.

I've created a map for this one based on how it looks to me https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubcrawl/birmingham.php

I've gone with a main crawl of 13 pubs with 4 wild cards. I'm leaning towards Good Intent rather than Old Joint Stock, but that depends mainly on if anyone else is doing that.

Timings based on spending 26 minutes per pub and walking between all of them, so really only a rough guide.

Tammy probably not joining me as she's had a cold all week (negative LFD tests every day).

Sorry to hear that Dave, there's a lot of Winter colds strains knocking people out at the moment. Thats what happens when you lock us all away and our immune systems have nothing to fight off for a year.
I believe keeping hydrated accelerates its passing so a day on the fizzy apple juice could do Tammy good...

Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow and meeting up again after all this time..

I like the way you can move the pubs up and down the order, or relegate/promote them to/from "wild card". Presumably there is a feature that calculates the route when they have been rearranged but you haven't completed that part of it yet?

I was thinking of including that one, as I've been to the Old Joint Stock.

Staying over in a gruesome Travelodge (not even doing breakfasts, but unsurprisingly cheap) after working in Brum today, so will probably head to the Briar Rose for a fry-up at about 10:45.

NB - As a public duty, I'm currently visiting a few 'Winfields' - think John Smith's, Worthington's if you're lucky or keg Banks's Original (mild) as a best case - in the outer suburbs near where a Soup Dragon is known to roam.

I know this is very late in the day, and some of you will have set off for your trains in the morning before seeing this, but having said that 15 was too many and Dave having ignored me and gone for 17, I've now got another wild card. From my copy of Camra's Real Heritage Pubs of the Midlands: Rose Villa Tavern (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37831/). It's a similar distance from the Jewellery Quarter station & tram stop as the Jewellers Arms, so if there happen to still be 20-odd of us getting off the tram at the same time, a split might be advantageous when it comes to getting served promptly. Not to mention, it seems to be a lovely pub.

Rose Villa Tavern is a lovely pub, and one to wander round the rooms and there was a phone box inside when we were last in there. Today going to be fun. I won't be capable of having a drink in every pub, but I am game to get round as many as I can with you all. Ray will do what he can, but may just do a few at the start, but I am so looking forward to having a go.

Something else to think about, Birmingham City playing West Brom tonight at Albion 8pm, so there will be footy fans having a drink before going to the match, and likely a few of the pubs screening the match. Will only affect those not on earlier trains home I suppose, but there will be fans around.

Good photo. Glad you managed to get together again. I called it a day after the Colmore, but got down to the Lamp Tavern before going home. Ray had an interesting day on his own. From the Wellington he got to the Colmore and Post Office Vaults. Walked up to the Craven Arms then checked the Victoria on his way back down but it was closed. From there he walked down towards the Lamp Tavern calling in the Dragon JDW, and noticed that the Sly Old Fox was closed. He went to the Lamp Tavern and the White Rose before going home. Not a bad day out.

Great to see everyone yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed catching up with old friends.

Thought the crawl itself was a bit chaotic but didn’t personally care because this one was more social event than serious pub and beer ticking for me.
And in the cold light of day I am a bit amazed we all managed to be in the same place at the same time for a photo, and in a Thornbridge pub as well, who would have thought 🤣
Also quite surprised I did as many pubs on the day as I did with some good new ones for me. Also thought the quality and choice of ale was good also, but then I do like Oakham and the T Brewery…
I’m sure it will be discussed but I did miss a timed running order and would like to see this back for the next one.

I learned several interesting things in the Burning Soul Taproom (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/85337/), having turned up an hour before opening time due to contradictory information from various online sources, but the duty manager / brewer kindly humoured me and was happy to serve a pint as he got the place ready before coming over for a chat.

In particular, after mentioning the earlier stop by one of the groups at The Bartons Arms (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53682/), he advised that this is no longer owned by Oakham since they recently accepted an offer from the team managing the pub and kitchen. However, that brewery's ales will still be a regular feature I understand, but with more guest beers in the future (e.g. the pair from Froth Blowers available when we called in).
