Beer of the Week for me was a remarkable Red Wine Barrel Aged Stout 6.7% from Neepsend Brew Co (https://neepsendbrewco.com/) at the Blake Hotel, Sheffield (https://www.facebook.com/blakehotelsheffield/). Only £3.80/pint! Tastes stronger than the label says but I've had much stronger versions of this style at the Crow Inn (https://www.thecrowinn.co.uk/) and at Shakespeare's and this tasted much the same. Quite a strong flavour of red wine and a touch of sourness or acidity from the cask ageing process, but the maltiness of the stout still present in the background. After drinking a couple of halves on Tuesday I went back on Wednesday and had a pint, topped up by two further halves, as my appreciation of this beer overcame my doubts about drinking too much of such a strong one.

When I went in last night for a pre-match lifter, the bar manager indicted to me that the beer was still on (its 6th day!) and told me it had gone much smoother than when it was first on. My first pint this time went down in under 30 minutes, which is pretty quick for a beer this strong. As it was getting near the end of the barrel I went for another, though this meant I had to finish my second in a similar time to be sure of being home in time for kick off. So by 8pm I was nicely mellowed.

Quite a beer! But the owner (of both pub and brewery) has apparently indicated that it will be a one-off: because it sold too slowly! Well, it may have been slow but at least it didn't go off. I told the manager that they should have charged £4.50 for it, because people who like this sort of beer won't object to paying a premium price (it's usually a lot more for this style at the Crow Inn where it's from an expensive keg) and people who don't like it weren't going to be drinking it even if it sold at £2.

Late entry and not worth the wait:

Peroni
Brancaster Oystercatcher*
Adnams Ghost Ship*

Limited variety but both beers were decent. The Peroni wasn’t.
BOTW Brancaster Oystercatcher . An old favourite and welcome in an area low on variety.
