A pal is going to be staying in Whitstable for a few days and was asking if I knew of any must-visit pubs within, say, a 10-mile radius. I think I have the low-down on Whitstable itself, but do any of you Men of Kent or Kentish Men know of any hidden rural gems? He & the missus will have transport, so that wouldn't be a factor. Thanks.

Off the top of my head, the Butchers arms at Herne-I haven't been there, but want to. It has odd opening hours to my knowledge, but keeps a mean pint of Hophead. The Three Horseshooes at Hernehill is a proper local, and knows how to serve Sheps (gravity dispense) Over at Oare near Faversham the Shipwrights Arms is (or was) excellent, specialising in mostly Kent micros. Probably a bit far out for you is the Black Lion at Lynsted , a shrine to Goachers. Incidentally, Goachers Fine Light Ale is still my beer of the year,a position it has graced since New Years day. Good luck!
What about doint the Shepherd and Neame brewery tour?
