Looks like a lot of people are going to lose their jobs with this virus.I do maintence jobs for local estate agents. My work load will diminish as people wont want any non essential repairs done but I should be able to find some work. I am over 65 so get a pension so should be alright.Already a lot of the tenants on zero hours contracts have contacted the landlords to say they cant pay the rent and will need at least 3 months rent holiday. Hard times ahead for some.cheers john

I'm retired and on an occupational pension, however with the inflation that's likely to come soon things could get very much worse for me. It will be worse for a lot of people as many companies are going to fail and a loan from the Government won't save them. Dark days ahead, maybe decades more austerity and recession.

I might have to go back to working for a living

Prescription pricer - paying the chemists for the prescription drugs they dispense. At the moment still working in the office while they attempt to figure out if we can work from home. I was meant to be down in London next month for a concert.

Risk management in energy industry. Difficult to say right now, but some in the office have got key worker documentation so they can use schools.

Assistant manager on a plant nursery, I suspect we may be shut down soon, the general public for the most part seemed oblivious to the current situation and current advice.

Driver for a Wine Merchant and Wholesaler , 95% of business is delivering to Pubs/Clubs/Restaurants , got laid off today , hopefully the Goverment will stick to paying the 80% of wages they promised .

Mrs has already got a mammoth list of jobs around the house/garden for me to do .

Data and records work at a University.

Luckily all our students are distance learning - maybe there'll be a surge in demand!?

My thoughts are with those of you who have been, or are probably about to be, laid off. How long this thing goes on for is anyone's guess, doubt most people's jobs are safe if this state of affairs carries on into June.

Commiserations mate that's shite news, as long as your employer hasn't made you redundant you should get the 80%, crap but better than income support or universal credit.

Farming: we are not customer facing,so are pretty socially isolated anyway, and it looks as if supplying the food chain might be acceptible again. However,Mrs W has a very small plant nursery, and all outlets-farmer's market and plant fairs are closed for the duration. We are looking at online, though I'm not holding my breath.

Self employed or local council? either way things could get very dodgy, probably will do for all of us; is Mrs A in a risky place as well?

I work for a company that manufactures all types of conveyor belts. They gave me a letter yesterday authorising me to travel to work if I am stopped by a government official. It appears we are an "essential service" as we supply a lot of belts to food producers.
We have been on overtime for the last 2 weeks - we even worked on Saturday!
I was quite hoping they would close for a couple of weeks if I am honest but I suppose I should be glad we are busy and I may as well earn a little extra. Shame I can't go to the pub with it !

Very, very glad to be retired (apart from a little freelance writing) but thinking of all those who are not so lucky. Fascinating array of jobs we all have though.

IT engineer, working for the NHS so job should be safe for the moment but who knows what might happen?

Also IT, currently doing mainframe security for a bank. Which on the face of it sounds great, banks will always need IT Security staff. Well, yes, but I’m very much on the project side, not BAU and I’m a self-employed contractor rather than an employee. If profits take a dive, projects will be the first thing to get canned and they can basically terminate me at any time. So, it’s just fingers crossed.

Mrs B on the other hand works for a drinks wholesaler delivering to bars and restaurants. So obviously she has no work at all. She’s being furloughed on the government 80% scheme from the beginning of May.

I am fully aware that I am one of the lucky ones.. With no particular hindsight, having paid off my mortgage and finished paying for the kids education I decided to retire second half of last year after 40 years in the electronics industry and 30 years working for a Japanese semiconductor manufacturing who provided a decent contribution pension scheme.

And as also blessed with a large back garden by North London standards I intend to ride it out with a beer on the patio chairs....

It’s all you self employed folks I really feel for and my heart and hopes go out to you guys and I also really hope the government is true to its word in your direction.

Still in contact with all my ex colleagues and being engineers they are all ok at the moment, but due to the manufacturing lag nature of the industry the pain won’t hit for about 6 to 9 months when the slowdown in the automotive market (50% of the European electronics market by value), and the industrial market (40%) will be felt. For sure there will be an upside in the medical market but unfortunately the electronics value in a ventilator is bugger all compared to a Standard saloon car nowadays.

Been happily retired for over 10 years now.

I was a project manager specialising in Implementation for a very large international computer company.

Got made redundant at 52, a regular occurrence in the trade, but didn't bother getting another job.

Eventually took my company pension at 60.

I started a new job last Monday as Sales Manager for a high voltage manufacturer in Manchester.
My job is safe for the time being, but they have cut wages by 20% for all directors and senior staff. Never had a pay cut before, let alone before I had even started... I was actually on my way home from last day at previous job when I got the call.
Because I wasn't on the books on 28th Feb I cannot furlough.

I have been back at work since Easter , and no ones more suprised than me , internet sales have gone through the roof , so delivering to lots of private houses , lots of pubs still having booze delivered , some having more than when they were open and acting as village off licence/bottle shops .
Hopefully this will keep up and keep the buisness ticking over untill the pubs reopen .

Distance being kept , just leave box on doorstep and ring the doorbell to let them know its there , everyone seems to be home at the moment for some reason:rolleyes:

Selling lots of premium stuff at the moment , sold more Cristal Champagne in the last month than in the last year and its £200+ a bottle .

I'm off on furlough until the end of May now.

Means I'm finally doing all the jobs I've been putting off foor years, like sorting out 15 years worth of digital photos.

Building Control Surveyor, we assess construction work for compliance, deal with unsafe buildings, licensing etc. Been working from home since 23rd March, it's challenging and new but still working and getting paid. Carrying out remote video inspection of works on phones for small jobs and using drones on some of the big sites. Much of the construction industry is still going and you wouldn't believe how many people are still starting domestic extensions , loft conversions and so on right now.

Seems less safe, but I expect that's me overthinking after being given project work that I haven't a clue how to progress with. In order to 'keep me busy' while working from home despite workload having otherwise increased!
