View Full Version : Blackheath in Buxton? (Open Street Geography)

I was looking at pubs in Buxton centre and many of them had Blackheath as the nearest station before Buxton on Open Street Maps.
So I looked at pubs in Blackheath. Even the Railway pub listed Kidbrooke, Hither Green and Lewisham, but not Blackheath!

The "map point" for Blackheath station is 163 miles out of place in Buxton. Anyone know how to fix it (or have we had enough with Geography Galore ).

Looks like an anomaly on Open Street, according to National Rail there is only one station now called Blackheath (BKH), my trusty railway maps of 1897, 1923 and 1947 show there was never a station in the Buxton area called Blackheath, the only Blackheath's being the former LC&DR and SER stations in Saff London one would expect.

Clicking on "show" reveals it to be in a residential street called Calesdale Close well away from any railway line.

All complaints to Open Street please.

We've had this before, here: Missing station on map (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?29079-Missing-station-on-map).

I have left a note about it on the OSM "problems" page.

Near to Blackheath station (the Real One), there is a Blackheath Grove.

At the side of the Blazing Rag Pub In Buxton, there is a Heath Grove and Coteheath Park

Someone updating OSM has got it mixed up!

EDIT:- OSM have just replied and said their maps are working perfectly and the fault must be a secondary site.
I guess the Snow White muppet :muppet: at the end of the original "missing station on map" was an admission of this.

Perhaps if you put a Blazing Rag together with the Buxton heath, you would end up with a black heath!

Yes, it was I that found it!

I think the issue might be that we use Leaflet (https://leafletjs.com/index.html), an open-source Java library (no, not a bookshop with coffee) to produce the maps. They source their data from OSM, and presumably have misplaced Blackheath in doing so!
