To stop the other threads getting over-long and unwieldy here's a list of dates for discussion and a list of the GBG2019 pubs that are more central.

October 4, 11, 18, & 25
November 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29.

Admiral Benbow (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/57889/)
The Coach & Horses (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/32199/)
The Nag's Head (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/57895/)
Montgomery's Tower (Lloyds No 1) (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/63807/)
The Salopian Bar (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/32248/)
Three Fishes (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/32265/)

Further out are The Dolphin (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/32210/) & The Woodman (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/32274/) and in the other direction Cross Foxes (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/32204/), The Prince Of Wales (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/32247/) and The Abbey (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/57888/) but all might be considered too far out?

I’m away for a sizeable chunk of November and cannot do four of those dates..
So statistically I think that makes it that I have a 55.6% chance of making this one...:)
Let’s see what the populist vote take III throws up....

Thank ob for getting the ball rolling.in terms of Fridays I could do Oct 4,18 and Nov 1 , 15.

In terms of route I guess we need some local input of non GBG pubs that are worth considering (if any). If ,however, some walking is required to sample the best of the Shrewsbury pub scene then so be it.

I suggested last year that we bring the autumn crawl date forward - we had previously gone for November in order to avoid the school half term at the end of October and its likely impact on train ticket availability. Half term is week commencing 21st, so this means the 18th would be the day that most schools break up. This leaves us with the options of the first two Fridays of October, or of course any Friday in November. Given that the clocks will be going back on 27th October, it will be getting dark early (which was partly the reason I suggested going for October). So I would advocate going for the early dates in October.

Did someone say local knowledge

The well trodden Ale Route around Shrewsbury inside the Loop (Shrewsburys nearly an island , the Loop refers to the part of town inside the loop of the River Severn) goes like this

Salopian Bar , modernish Ale Bar
Shrewsbury Hotel(JDW) , most publike of the 2 spoons in town
Armoury, gastro pub but a good selection of ales
Montgomerys Tower (JDW) , less publike but better beer
Wheatsheaf , Marstons usually 6/7 beers on
Three Fishs , very good pub , 6/7 mostly local beers
Loggerheads , Marstons , worth a visit for the interior
Yorkshire House , its a bit bonkers
Nags Head , can be hit and miss ale wise , but has a 500 year old smoking shelter
Coach and Horses , lovelly victorian corner pub , usually 4/5 local beers
Admiral Benbow , decent pub 6/7 local beers

Its worth a walk up Coton Hill to the Woodman and the Royal Oak , its only a 5/10 minute walk , the Dolphin is also worth a walk but is a bit further .

Plenty of other pubs around in town , and a short walk away .

The Abbey must have changed a hell of a lot , its was just a bog standard Ember Inns pub on the few times i have been there .

Beer was OK (though unadventurous) when I was there a year or so ago, and maybe the music would suit some tastes, but it's not a must-visit in my view.

Early October (Fri 4th?) works best for me. In any event, November is going to be darker and colder.

Seems to be some sort of consensus forming around the 4th Ocotober. Do we need a poll or should we just go for it? Train tickets will already be on sale for that date, so time becomes (possibly) of the essence.

I don't think anyone has actually said no to that date. Quinno said the earlier the better for him, and I did point out that it's the start of school holidays, so there may be some pressure on train tickets, but other than that it seems to be the date with fewest objections.

How about we leave it until the end of July? If no one has objected to Friday October 18th by midnight on Wednesday this week, then that'll be the date. If anyone speaks up against it we'll have a poll with closing date a week later (ie midnight on 7th August).

I've got 3 nights at the PI booked which is nearer £50.00 a night than £30.00 as it's under three months away. I've also got the tickets up booked. Anyone thinking of staying on Friday night should note that Wolves are at home to Southampton on the Saturday making the evening trains through there difficult.

There are three very near the station that may be worth adding as Wild Cards the Castle Vaults, the crafty Castle Hotel and the Albion Vaults.
Some people may not be happy with including two JDWs but on the other hand I'm not happy with including Marston outlets. That doesn't matter as I'll be doing a Lite version of the ultimate crawl.

I didn't really get involved in the date selection process as we don't get out with you on a regular basis these days, but will not be able to do 18th as we are booked into travelodge at Sheffield that day, but hope you all have a really good time. Enjoyed meeting up with you on our last visit to Sheffield. Have just had a few days in York, and will be enjoying a couple of days in Liverpool and Bristol later this month, so are still interested in both pubs and beer.

Have fun.

The only outlier not mentioned is the Joules Bricklayers in Copthorne but isn't worth the diversion. The Dolphin is worth a look but is a big diversion although there are buses. There are three very near the station that may be worth adding as Wild Cards the Castle Vaults, the crafty Castle Hotel and the Albion Vaults.

I make that over two dozen suggested pubs, and I would like to add my own: Bull in the Barne (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/32192/), which was found "acceptable" by Al Bundy in 2015, which is good enough for me to take a walk in that direction, plus the Old Bucks Head and the Boathouse, while we're outside the Loop. So, obviously far too many - needs a bit of whittlin' down.

I would start by eliminating the two 'Spoons, but then I would, wouldn't I? Also the three pubs near the station. I've been to the Prince of Wales, which I liked but wouldn't necessarily recommend to anyone who didn't fancy walking that far out of town, and I guess we could also eliminate the Abbey on the same grounds (and Oggy's comment above!). And then there's the new Evolution (added by Oggwyn on 24th August) (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/88101/), but that looks a bus ride away and opens at 4pm. Volunteers?

But 22 or even 21 is still too many, so they need splitting into main route and wild cards. Please don't shout at me, because this is just to get things stirred up and I haven't the time today to put these in a reasonable walking sequence either:

M Admiral Benbow
M The Coach & Horses
M The Nag's Head
M The Salopian Bar
M Three Fishes
M (?) The Dolphin
M The Woodman
M Cross Foxes
M/W Loggerheads
W Armoury
W Wheatsheaf
W Yorkshire House
W Royal Oak
W Bricklayers
W Bull in the Barne
W Shrewsbury Hotel
? Montgomery's Tower (Lloyds No 1)
? Olde Bucks Head
? Boathouse
? Evolution

So that's nine(ish) main route pubs, seven or more wild cards and a few queries. Apologies for any errors and omissions (please correct gently), but I'm under multiple stresses from work and impending redundancy (even though I'm fairly happy to take it), plus I nearly got knocked off my bike on the way home tonight and needed something strong to help me relax. The combination of alcohol, in hand and in prospect, has helped.

Looking forward to this crawl - and contributions to the debate!

Local knowledge is always very useful when planning crawl routes, and I don't see much wrong with Oggy's original plan. His crawl is in a pretty tight area and getting around the 11 in The Loop doesn't seem too much of a push. (Wetherspoons objectors could self select and get this down to 9.)Many of us will wish to finish near the station so The Woodman and Royal Oak seem sensible at the end of the day but with additional wild cards of The Dolphin and the three station pubs mentioned by Aqualung.

Cross Foxes,Bull in the Barne,Old Buck's Head and Boathouse all seem to be at the edges of his main route and could be included as more wild cards.

A bus ride away to Evolution must surely be for the hardy and not one for the main route.

Here's my thoughts/

For some reason the Dolphin is not in the latest GBG.
The JDW 40th Anniversary Autumn beef festival is going on the date with many one off brews.
I wouldn't call any of these "near" the station but surely the nearest is the Salopian Bar? I believe it opens at 11:00.
The three I mentioned near the station are yards away. One us a former GBG entry but is noisy, one is a crafty bar and the one I haven't tried has been described in the past as a dump. I've certainly no objection to them not being part of the route.
The Dolphin is a bus ride away but most buses seem to be infrequent and finish early. For me the Woodman & Royal Oak are a fair way out and although I got a bus out to them I had to walk back.

Couldn't agree more. I wasn't rejecting or denigrating Oggy's suggested route, just seeing if we could incorporate some of the suggestions from others that had been made during the thread.

The Woodman and Royal Oak seem sensible at the end of the day but with additional wild cards of The Dolphin and the three station pubs mentioned by Aqualung [Castle Vaults, the Station Hotel and the Albion Vaults].

A bus ride away to Evolution must surely be another for the hardy and not one for the main route.

All good points, though as far as the three near the station are concerned, my own experience of the Castle Vaults rules it out for me, and the Station with its solitary handpump doesn't look too enticing either; Old Boots has done a recent reconaissance and the Albion Vaults, although still loud, appears to now have some decent real ale on.

Only 6 minutes from the station (OSM and Google agree:) ) and only 1 minute from the Shrewsbury Hotel for the breakfast eaters.

Only 6 minutes from the station.

That'll be about 20 for me!!
For those who don't want to walk to the Woodman/Royal Oak and/or the Dolphin, the bus station is next door to the Premier Inn and these are between the rail station and the Salopian Bar. It would make sense for those wanting to include any of these to visit them after the Salopian and then return and travel away from the river into the main town. Anyone staying in the town who wants to go to the JDWs would do well to get them out of the way early doors.
My plans at the moment are to go to Newtown on Wednesday, Ludliow Tap Thursday, probably returning to see what's on in the JDWs then the Salopian. I haven't planned anything for the Saturday but am booked on the direct train back which I think leaves around 15:40.

I hadn't seen that, it wouldn't affect travel from London apart from possibly congested trains in the West Midlands. I think it would make journeys via Reading virtually impossible and from Manchester awkward. I'm not sure about Yorkshire or the North East. I think that relies on a Cross Country service via Burton & Tamworth. .

Of course! I've been on it to Crewe and had forgotten all about it. So it's Reading to the Midlands avoiding London that's the big problem. Going to Hereford or Newport and getting the Transport for Wales train is probably worse than going to London.

I'll do the honours as I was there on 30th August, beer quality NBSS 2, that was on a par with the Albion Vaults and joint last of the Shrewsbury pubs I visited. The Royal Oak and the Bird in Hand both got 2.5 and the Woodman a 3. The Bull wasn't brilliant but it was better than the Dolphin as was the Britannia, so I'd say Shrewsbury Camra got it right.

What's your favourite in Shrewsbury? It might surprise people to know that mine is the Salopian Bar as despite the TVs and noise they usually have something worth drinking and with the combined Happy Hour and CAMRA discount it's a reasonable price. The building itself is very dull but the staff are cheery and pleasant. It's also very close to the Premier Inn.
I chatted to a couple from Shrewsbury at the Llanbedr beer festival who highly recommended the Prince of Wales mentioned above. More importantly we discussed why it's sometimes called "Shroesbury" rather than Shrewsbury but they didn't have an answer as they had always used the Shrewsbury pronunciation as have I. The subject of Salop & Shropshire was raised as I could recall the old Western region steam loco being the County Of Salop not the County Of Shropshire. They informed me that it was changed when it became known that Salop was a French word for an unpleasant person or even when applied to a female a slag. Maybe San & Tray from VIZ will pay us a visit on the day!!

It would make sense for those wanting to include any of these (Woodman/Royal Oak/Dolphin) to visit them after the Salopian

The Woodman and The Bird in Hand don't open until 4pm so would be better doing these later. Only 8 minutes (22 Aqualung minutes :) ) from the station.

What's your favourite in Shrewsbury?

Shrewsbury has a great range of pubs, I like the Salopian Bar as well and of course the Three Fishes, Benbow, Coach & Horses. It's probably easier to say which pubs I don't like and of course it depends on the mood I'm in, one day the Yorkshire House would be fine another it would be a total pain.

Admiral Benbow tends not to open till 4/5pm on a Friday , the Cross Foxes is a cracking little locals pub only a short walk from the Nags Head , cut past the Hop and Friar and across the footbridge on St Julians , you will pass House of Grain on the way a craft beer bar for those intrested in these things .
The Boathouse is in a wonderfull position but aint that great as a pub , the nearby Wheatsheaf is better .
Places like the Kings Head and Hole in the Wall look great and have some intresting features but are not really worth doing .
I am supposed to be in Greece at the moment (Thomas Cook) so will have time to have a scout round and check opening times etc .

A favourite destination for me with good pubs. The Salopian, the Armoury (beer wise that is), The Dolphin, Wheatsheaf (I like both of them but beer wise the one in town is better), Loggerheads and Admiral Benbow. I tend to avoid The Hole In The Wall as I don't have a pram or screaming kid in tow.

That would be The Wheatsheaf (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/32269/) in Frankwell, of course, not The Wheatsheaf (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/32268/) in the centre, which was the one you mentioned in your post above (#9 (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?29954-Autumn-2019-Shrewsbury-Crawl-Dates-and-Venues&p=101851#post101851)). Thanks for that, very useful bit of info. (I might still end up popping over to the Boathouse, just because it's on the way to the other Frankwell pubs while the main crawl is in the Wetherspoons!)

From my limited experience of Shrewsbury pubs, I would heartily endorse your views on the Kings Head and Hole in the Wall.

BTW, what is your view of the Bull in the Barne (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/32192/) - have you been in there since Al Bundy's review of four years ago?

The GBG says the Loggerheads has 4 changing beers. That suggests that they now serve non Marston's beers as well.

The Three Fishes is a good pub but it can get full and foody around 12 to 2. At one such time, I couldn't find anywhere to even stand!

Had a wander around Shrewsbury including an enjoyable half hour in the Loggerheads , all 7 handpulls in use Banks Amber x2 , Snecklifter , Oxford Gold , Marstons Sweet Chariot and Pedigree and Thwaites Wainwright so not the most exciting choice but in good shape , its the pub itself thats the attraction and the chatty locals .
Also had a walk to the Bull in the Barne , its been modernized and knocked into one room with a couple of big TVs showing football , locals were friendly and the beer in great shape , its a good little pub but not really worth a special journey .
Nipped into the Three Fishes for a quick pint and ended up having four :D its that sort of place .

All being well I hope to arrive at 11.19 and will go Salopian. Is there a 'definitive' plan somewhere?

I hope to be in the Salopian by about 11:45 or 12 at the latest.

There's a very sketchy plan that I did about an hour ago for my own benefit, so that at least I would know what I'm doing. (I was expecting Oggwyn to be in charge, you see. The news of his defection has hit me hard.) I have allowed 30 minutes per pub and 15 minutes for wild cards.

Salopian until about 12:15
Armoury (wild card) 12:20 -12:35
Coach & Horses 12:45 - 13:15
Admiral Benbow 13:15 - 13:45
Wheatsheaf (wild card) 13:50 - 14 05
Nags Head 14:10 - 14:40
Cross Foxes 14:50 - 15:20
Three Fishes 15:30 - 16:00

Yorkshire House (wild card) 16:40 - 16:55

I designated three pubs as "wild cards" because a) I have been there and wasn't that impressed, or b) the description on WP and/or PG wasn't all that tempting. Obviouly, if people like them and want to spend half an hour there, that's fine.

Coach and Horses and the Admiral Benbow are virtually next door to each other , the nearest pubs are the Exchange which on my last visit a few years ago had 4 local ales on , the Loopy Shrew normally has a couple on from Salopian and Alberts Shed which has a couple of ales on , non of them are anything special .
I know Sheffield Hatter fancied a trip to the Boathouse so if you have 30 mins to spare you can cut across Quarry Park and cross the river by the bouncy footbridge to it , only take about 10 mins maybe less .

I made it to the Three Fishes by 15:00 but not realising it was so far down the list, probably leaving before the main group arrived. I immediately recognised it as one I had been to before around 20 years ago.
I've another stay in Shrewsbury next January when an extended visit to the Prince Of Wales will be the priority.

Yes.

And well done to Will for creating such a wonderful and varied route - a great crowd and another fine day of Puggery!

No, no, no!!! It was a team effort, with splinter groups going off in all directions and ending up in the wrong Wheatsheaf on purpose. You're just trying to wind me up, aren't you?

And not forgetting Oggwyn, to whose health we drank in the Nags Head. Hope to see you again soon, Oggy.

Two shots of the backs of people's heads in the Nags Head, and two at the Loggerheads, one inside and one in the rain. (I wasn't going to hang around out there waiting for everyone else, so that's the nearest we got to a group photo.)

I checked the PUG crawl history today and apparently next year is the 10th anniversary of the PUG crawls so assuming the South, North and Midland pattern is maintained it should by rights be Brum next Autumn. My only problem with this is that it will bypass all the pointless PUG geography issues!

I was amused to learn that a new turn of phrase has been invented and that's an Aqualung mile. Roughly speaking, a five minute walk is an Aqualung mile although hills or even worse steps could vary this.

A very enjoyable day, despite the occasional bit of weather, and good to see everybody of course. Of particular note is that, despite going for local ales for preference, I managed to have a different brew in every pub (15), so quite happy with Shrewsbury. Shame I couldn't stay for the last couple but, with the assistance of a handy bus, I made my train with sufficient time to pop in one opposite the station!

There is no "South, North and Midland pattern", except that there is one crawl in each geographical area each year. There is nothing to prevent Birmingham being in the spring of 2020.

Nothing to prevent discussions of geography either!

I have added a spreadsheet to the thread which lists all the Pubs Galore crawls (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?16155-A-brief-history-of-PuG-crawls&p=103505#post103505). I hope this will be useful when the next discussion begins.

Although there is a neat symmetry going back to Birmingham close to the 10 year anniversary in the autumn of 2020.

I would prefer to keep the North in the summer simply because during hot weather it's usually cooler in the North, although not guaranteed!
As BF points out the anniversary is in the Autumn.

Didn't realise this has been already, but couldn't have done it with Mon-Tues touring very nearby - much of the Brum-Shrews line tour revisited, then Walsall for the Tues debrief.
The Golden Triangle is so good that I think that'll be a train diversion from Shrewsbury whenever I get there again. I thought it was Oggy arriving soon after entering the Station, but seems you have a doppelganger around there OT?
tm: "Hey, Oggy, how you doing? I wondered if you'd be around!"
dg: "Have we met..?"
Referrals to PG etc would not convince him he was someone else...
