New poll to break the tie between Newark and Shrewsbury, with the suggestion that the losing finalist becomes the 2020 Autumn PuG Crawl destination (to be confirmed).

Thanks for posting the tie breaker poll.

There was a tentative plan that the 2020 Autumn Crawl should be a 10th Anniversary of the very first crawl back in Birmingham.

I'd forgotten about that when I suggested the runner up should get an automatic place and think that your suggestion is 100% correct. Perhaps places that haven't been visited for over 10 years should have the embargo removed?

Yes, agree with that, a lot can change in a decade.

18 votes on the first round, but just 14 so far on the tie-breaker - only five hours left so get down to the virtual polling station!

Maybe some people aren't too fussed about which it is. I'd happily go to either whereas on the big vote there were some places I was fairly indifferent about.

You may be right, but just one vote in it now, and less than an hour left...

Others "out in the sticks" are very bothered-

Shrewsbury) 1 train, 30 minutes, leave 23.33, £7.15

Newark) 5 trains, 5 hours 10 minutes, leave 18.42, £64.90 (fair chance of not getting home due to missed connection)

Glad that I have been saved by the bell!

Works in reverse for me, initial costings Newark 3 hrs 30 - £54.00, Shrewsbury 4hrs plus - £110.00 , time , my attendance is now in doubt.:(

An advance ticket from Basingstoke to Wolverhampton on the XC Bournemouth to Manchester service with no railcards is £28.00 and takes two and a half hours. . A day return from Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury is £10.50. There are Premier Inns near both Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury stations which if you get in early enough are £30.00 per night..
Newark is much easier for me but I chose Shrewsbury for better options.

Thanks, not had time to study all options yet, sounds a bit more realistic.

I assume you were looking at Newark via London. If that had won the poll I was looking at staying in Nottingham rather than the considerably cheaper day out.
The biggest problem with Shrewsbury is that some of the good pubs are a long way from the centre.

We now need a poll or representations for a date. Any volunteers? November suits me best. We also need a route which may prove tricky!

...and yet you voted for Shrewsbury anyway! No doubt you had your reasons. What was the decider for you? Perhaps you thought you had a better chance of becoming prime minister if Shrewsbury was the choice. Oh, hang about, not everything is about Brexit, is it.

The biggest problem with Shrewsbury is...

...how to pronounce it so as not to offend the locals.

Play safe - just call it West Atcham!

Try yr Amwythig (https://cy.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amwythig) or even Pengwern (https://cy.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pengwern).

...or see this Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrewsbury) which suggests that the name in old English meant "fortified place in the bushes" (ooh err, missus). More pertinently, the article gives two pronunciations without saying which is preferred by townspeople or scholars. The fact that the football club goes by the name of the Shrews (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrewsbury_Town_F.C.) may or may not be relevant in this context.

How much simpler if we'd gone to Newark instead.

The one time I visited I asked that very question, and was told.. "Well there's no bloody 'O' in it, is there?"

Try pronouncing The Snowshill Arms (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/73890/)!

To add to the confusion with a third way, have a listen to this BBC Radio 4 programme (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05wy64j).

The saving grace, of course, is that once there you are unlikely to have to utter the name to the locals!

I did also say that I thought Shrewsbury has better options. I do have an overall preference for W Midland rather than E Midland towns. The ease of getting there isn't a major factor for me unless it's somewhere really silly like Pwllheli, Helston or Wick. .

That's easy to get round, just call it Amwythig!! (Edit: I've just seen that this has been covered!!)
There is potentially another problem in that it rains a lot in Wales which often affects the River Severn here. The fact is that the weather can wreck one of these events at any time of year and in ant place. My visit to Nottingham this week didn't go to plan nor did my visit to Wales last year when the Beast From The East came to town.
