No under 21 drinking in Henley

I see from the BBC regional news today that 15 pubs in the Henley on Thames Pubwatch scheme have apparently decided that during the Henley Regatta week they will enforce a policy of not serving alcohol to anyone under 21.

I'm not sure that I approve of the fact that they can decide to simply change the law to suit themselves in this way. Sure they will have enough business anyway but if I was a Henley resident between 18 and 21 (I wish !) I think I would be pretty annoyed about this.

No doubt for the remaining 51 weeks of the year they will be doing all they can to attract these 'troublemakers' through the door !

The policy of supermarkets and pubs of not serving anyone who appears to be 21 or under unless proof of age is given is reasonable and most in that age group now carry suitable I.D

An age group has now been stigmatised and a star chamber of 15 publicans have decide to make their own laws. No, I am not in favour of it..People of that age are legally entitled to buy alcohol unless already drunk, troublesome, banned or the licencee does not like their face.

Lets hope an ambulance chasing lawyer sees a few bucks in this situation.

My D in Law is a little elfin figured 38 year old and she is still asked for proof of age. I think she likes it really

Sadly I can see where they're coming from. The younger members of the rowing fratenity are in the main the same public school kids who spend much of the summer causing chaos in places like Newquay. Legally I don't think it's a problem, the young, or indeed old, are about the only groups publicans can ban because of what they are. There have always been lots of places which only allow over 21s or even 25s. Age discrimination legislation only covers employment, unlike the laws about race, sex, disablity and so on.

The Admiral Benbow in Shrewsbury has a loose no under 30s rule , i get served no problem .... they could at least pretend to make me feel better

Presumably they've done this as there is a bigger profit margin in jugs of Pimms and bottles of champagne than there is in blue WKD's and Red Bull ;)

As a publican, and as a former door supervisor, unfortunately the majority of problems are caused by this age group, and that's a fact that my own stats back up.

As an onlooker, I think they're walking a tightrope - it's a fact we can ban anyone we want, but the legal issue comes when giving a reason - if the reason is in anyway prejudiced then you can be held to account. Do you have a link to the original story? i'm wondering if it's the local PLO that's suggested this as best practice to ease policing for the regatta week; if that's the case then it's not compulsory and not enforcable by law - but a great big "I told you so" from your licensing officer doesn't look good at renewal time.

I was going to say make it fair on everyone and ban the regatta but then realised we no longer have a Royal Navy big enough to enforce. I doubt the Police would because its on water and Elf and Safley would claim special training was required or another Diversity Course. I suppose you could always arm the Sea Cadets.

I don't think I have actually welcomed you to the forum. You have probably gathered by now that me and Dave M are the admins of this and the main PuG site, so if you have an problems, queries or suggestions please do let us know.

Also from my perspective it is great to have another forumite who is actually involved in running a pub, we are really keen to hear any ideas you may have on how to make the site work better for pubs (other than of course being more popular which will come, thanks for mentioning us on your Twitter feed (http://twitter.com/powmerton)).
