New "season" starts tomorrow!

Good luck to all with their targets / challenges.

I will aim for 200 new pubs again.

I have also upped my game doing more reviews lately - I'll se how close I can get to the 1000 club by the end of the year.

I am very close to 1000 photos so I will try to get close to 1500.

I think I have set my sights a little high but you never know!

257 new pubs is the 2019 target, as that will get me over the 4k barrier. Should be do-able with a bit of decent planning (I suspect I'll be ticking off a lot of London Zone 1 for low-hanging fruit).

Trip to Chester already planned for Feb, so should get 20-25 over that weekend.

Give us a shout when up north, although Chester is a bit far from Stockton!

PS the Birkenhead merseyrail should offer quite a few.

Chester itself (unexplored bar Brannigans - LOL - 15 years back) provides a lot of decent options. A half day down towards Wrexham will bag a recent National CAMRA POTY as well :)

If that's the one by Ruabon Station then it's well worth an extended stay.

Just to record that I'm starting on 2083 visits.
I'm hoping to keep on top of new JDW outlets but a lot will depend on events in Ireland. It looks like a new one will open at Diss but I predict that the first one may be the one on Glasgow Central Station. I plan to get to the new Titanic outlet on Stoke Station and the new one at Trentham (don't ask, it's part of Stoke is all I know) which should open fairly soon.
I already have five stays away planned for the first quarter of 2019 but one is in Loughborough mainly to do a return trip on the Great Central line so there won't be many new pubs.

I shall set a 365 target again - one per day on average seems appropriate. I also intend to make the 3000 photos, which is 757.

Just to add some focus, I want to thin down my 'zero' counties, especially odd bits of Wales.

Isn't retirement great!!!!

The obvious target for 2019 is to reach 2,000 reviews which means 184 new pub visits. My 5 year average is 188 so this sounds achievable but no doubt a stretch as I do have a very bad habit of spending a whole evening in a great pub once I've discovered it.

I intend to navigate some obscure parts of the Birmingham Canal Navigations and go as far north as Liverpool so that will add to the total,as will the three PuG crawls during the year, especially with Portsmouth being virgin territory. The growth in the number of micro pubs is also helpful, especially in towns frequently visited on my voyages but which in the past have often only offered one decent real ale option.

Happy Hunting everybody !

Many years since I did all the BCN, and sadly considerably fewer pubs nowadays I fear but still some notable ones. On the plus side, access to and from the cut is much easier now. Have a good year!

Do let me know if you plan to navigate the Netherton Tunnel as I hesitate to tackle this walk without a friendly boat nearby!

I will be going through both ways to get photo evidence of having navigated to Hawne Basin, the southern portal of Dudley Tunnel and on the Stourbridge Extension Canal ,most likely sometime between late April and early May.I've walked that tunnel towpath in the past, but prefer being on a boat these days.I'll keep you informed of my plans.

I'm currently on 714 reviews, so will try to get that up to 1,200 by the year end.

I'm also setting myself a target of 500 new beers, as recorded on my Untappd App which I've been using since 2015.

And in somewhat of a juxtaposition, I'm also going to try to lose a stone in weight during the year.

Amazed that our new pub total for 2019 so far is 79, mainly due to the monthly CAMRA trips out by coach we do now. I am also trying to get round all the West Mids Good Beer Guide pubs I have not visited before and only have 25 of them left to do before the next GBG comes out.

Off to Wigan area with CAMRA on Saturday then Salisbury area in May. We have just booked a couple of nights in Bristol in May too as we fancy a crawl round the bars there - never went last year and a lot of good pubs and new micro bars opened up I believe. I have put July 12 in diary as a possible for Sheffield as I see you are on a crawl there. We could never manage to do the crawl with you all, but might get to see you round Kelham Island area. Will see how things are nearer the time.

The end of June seems a good place to measure to, being half way through the year. My total for the first half of the year is 63 which I'm quite pleased with. An additional two are bar/restaurant type places that I chose not to include. There was also one extra that I had been in previously when it was a Wetherspoons, and again once it changed hands, but I think counting it as a new visit would be cheating.

June may yield some more canal orientated ticks in the Churnet Valley and Potteries and there still a lot more Thames Path pubs in London to investigate.

Chugged on to 112 at the half way point of the year. That leaves 72 more new reviews to get to the 2,000 mark by the end of the year.Possible but a bit of a push.

DAVE - I know this issue has been raised before, but any chance of adding the Channel Islands as 'region', with Jersey and Guernsey (including Alderney, Sark and Herm) as 'counties' now that a variation of the postcode work-around already in place for the Isle of Man should work?

A very slow summer period saw me finish the year on 191 - nine short of my target of 200.

My 2019 feels like it was defined by 'craft' keg-only bars - 1 in every 5 pubs I visited this year fit that description, whether they be a brewery bar, a bottle shop or a Brewdog-style craft beer bar. The rate at which these places are springing up around London, combined with the fact that I've ticked most of the 'classic' cask ale pubs around the capital, means that this year's 'new pub' haul contained twice as many craft-keg venues as last year and, looking at my 'to do' list for London, it's likely they will feature heavily again in 2020. I'd better give my bank manager some advance warning!
