As the title says. Following this comment in another thread;
I think it would be a better idea to challenge everyone to publish on the forum their own top 10 pubs of all time with no obligatory comment or justification and most definitely no discussion or arguments about the choices.
This would be a separate thread from the top beers or pubs of the year and the worst pub.
As with all these lists it would be totally irrelevant!
I thought it would be fun to start one.
This is not easy, as I have just discovered. Getting on for 3,800 reviews, I have scored 32 a perfect 10 (0.84%)*. Of these 32, there are a number where I would have the score at 9.5, which knocks about half out. This left 19 to narrow down to 10! I gave favour to those where I have visited more than once - maintaining a 10 across multiple visits is a feat in itself. Then knocked out some where the last visit was more than 5 years ago. Then I filled the last few places with those where I shelved plans to move elsewhere, or I made a revisit during a crawl. Your methodology may be a bit different, of course ;)

Top 10 (thus far...)!
Yes, it's not easy, is it! (I've been to eight of your 10 and know the other two by reputation or recommendation, so applaud your choices.)
It's made even harder for me by the fact I've only ever awarded eight scores of 10. Going through those and my slightly more numerous nines, I recognise quite a few instances where I've been influenced by an emotional reaction to the pub: being bowled over. Most of these are pubs that have scored highly for what was a very brief visit and that, on reflection, may not have been as good as I thought they were. But if I've only been there once, who can tell?

The Brunswick! Now that's interesting, I wondered if it was missing. I had that in my list of 9's (which I didn't consult) - a 9.5, really. Part of the reflections I had doing my list was that, despite me being generally more kindly to places than perhaps some other reviewers, I have got more discerning when comes to awarding the bigger scores over the last couple of years. There were some in my list of 10's that I doubt I would give a 10 to now. If the list was extended to 20, the Brunswick would definitely feature on it... *makes note to do this list later*

My problem with the Brunswick is that I marginally prefer the Alex and am probably the only one who does. I gave both a 9 which is defo stingy but I couldn't resolve giving one a higher score than the other.
I wouldn't have a clue as to how a list of my 10 scores would be extracted so my list is all based on memory!
This was almost impossible, my first list had about 25 pubs on it. So I've discounted any local favourites and just had a little tour around the country

Oh my, the Plough! A bit like the Brunswick, a 9.5er and it has multiple visits. An absolute Top 20 pub!
The joy of seeing these top 10's is that we can all grab some to put on our 'must-do' lists for the next 18 months. There are a few I have not really heard of before, so is fantastic intel for me to plan away days.

I was reluctant to discard the Red Lion at Snargate from my list and also the Cricketers at Berwick which I thought may be on your one. It just goes to show what a difficult choice it is!

Ahh, the Cricketers.Perhaps I should substitute it for either the Earle Arms of the Three Stags Heads,neither of which I'm likely to revisit or logistical reasons.

Here are ten London pubs I visit regularly.I am a beer ticker first then a pub ticker so beer range and quality are a priority.One thing I have found out over the years of reviewing pubs on this site is my opinion of a pub changes with multiple visits but you can only review it as you find it.

I see where you're coming from. And I had similar qualms myself (see #2 above). But if they were among your 10 best pub visits and therefore the best pubs (in your opinion), why not stick to your gut feeling? The whole point of this thread (it seems to me) is to get a look at what each of us have discovered in our various trawls of this country's pubs.
If we all liked the same 10 pubs, how sad (and tedious) would that be?
We've all previously had a go at some of the pub lists provided by "connoisseurs" of one sort or another (mostly journalists - and I don't use the word in a derogatory sense), so this is our opportunity. This is our forum: be bold, be positive, take ownership.
It's not about arriving at a "Pubs Galore Top 100" (at least, I would argue against such an approach). It's about sharing amongst ourselves on this forum what it is we like about pubs, wherever we may find them.
I like the way Quinno exclaims at recalling pubs that others have rated in their top 10s that almost made his own. I like the words of wisdom from John : "One thing I have found out over the years of reviewing pubs on this site is my opinion of a pub changes with multiple visits but you can only review it as you find it." I like it that you, Wittenden, enjoyed the quirky Three Stags Heads even though you're never likely to go there again - a friend that I was talking to down the pub tonight recalled a time when we visited that pub a few years ago, and we may visit again as a result; we live 20 miles from Wardlow Mires. I like recognising the names of pubs others have listed but I haven't - why is it a 7 for me but a 10 for them? (And vice versa - and does it matter? No, obviously not.)
I like the regional biases - nothing from Basingstoke, obviously - and this is where we get one over on the aforementioned experts, since we're (collectively) from all over the country, and - more to the point - we travel to other parts of the country with the intention of seeking out and enjoying the pubs that we find there. If they have views and walks as well, that's just a bonus.
Oh, and if anyone has recommended a pub on this thread but not actually written a review, please do so asap to spare your blushes.

I agree with the above apart from the bit about not being derogatory about journalists! My list is fairly spontaneous and based on all sorts of factors and prejudices! I feel no need to change it although if I did it again in six months time there would probably be changes but I would recommend that Wittenden didn't make any changes. I think these lists are more useful than the ones produced by newspapers and websites as they highlight to a degree what people on this site are looking for in a pub.

Oh, and if anyone has recommended a pub on this thread but not actually written a review, please do so asap to spare your blushes.
I hold my hands up....but I can't honestly write a review of a pub I haven't visited for a couple of years having never got round to doing so at the time. That doesn't stop it being one of my favourites.

Every time I start trying to compile a list, I immediately think 'oh no, that's not much good now' or 'hell, that's become a gastropub'. Or more likely nowadays 'wow, when did that close?'. As my ideal is probably something you could describe as an unspoilt, proper pub, I suppose the chances of it becoming 'spoilt' over time are pretty high!
I might try as a starting point producing a list of pubs that I would (still) make a point of visiting if in the vicinity and see where that goes.

When I lived in Preston I only visited the Black Horse about six or seven times in two years. But looking back its in my top three or four there, (it's one for a certain mood! ).

I agree with the above apart from the bit about not being derogatory about journalists! My list is fairly spontaneous and based on all sorts of factors and prejudices! I feel no need to change it although if I did it again in six months time there would probably be changes but I would recommend that Wittenden didn't make any changes. I think these lists are more useful than the ones produced by newspapers and websites as they highlight to a degree what people on this site are looking for in a pub.

Maybe ruined is the wrong word, what I was getting at was ones which have become gastro pubs or restaurants, so arguably no longer pubs.

For gastrification, I suggest almost all of the Young's estate, willful destruction started almost the day John Young died. This one (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/22701/), a favourite work local in the 90s, deserves a special place in hell.

I went round the Young's estate back in the mid 1970s to become a member of the 135 association so know exactly what you're saying. For me the rot began when they got rid of the public bar at the Windmill on Clapham Common which I think happened in the 1980s. Even before that the original Founders Arms and Prince William Henry in SE1, both being archetypal back street boozers were replaced with the current versions. I won't go in a Young's pub now and stopped going to them before they abandoned the brewery.

Ah yes, The Whittle. I remember it well. When I lived in Lancaster it used to be owned by Matthew Brown of Blackburn (http://breweryhistory.com/wiki/index.php?title=Matthew_Brown_%26_Co._Ltd), now long since defunct. It was a good locals pub, just out of the city centre. Glad you like it.

I may have missed pubs that should make my top 10 as I'm just going by my now somewhat erratic memory. But these are all good ones. My list is inevitably London-centric, but I have heard that there are several really good pubs outside London so I thought it fair to include a trio of ones that I have visited.
I would just like to pick up a point made earlier in this thread - in that I think it's perfectly reasonable to submit a review and rating after a single visit. Of course a single visit is just a snapshot, but if enough people post reviews following snapshot visits then anyone looking to visit the pub will have a very good idea what to expect. A case in point is the Red Lion at Snargate. I had no reason to visit Snargate other than to visit the Red Lion, have only paid a single visit to the pub and suspect that this is the case for the majority of us who have visited. But when anyone who hasn't visited looks at the reviews and ratings of so many "regulars' then they can be pretty sure that it's a damned good pub.

Your vote has elevated it to the "Hall Of Fame" and given that it's one that I prevaricated over quite a lot then it probably belongs in the upper reaches of the two votes group. I've actually been there several times, the first time being the early 1980s before it became a GBG regular. We were on a tour of pubs in Oxney and Romney Marsh that sold Biddendon Cider. This was the final one and easily the best so we stayed until closing time. I've never been there without trying some cider and that's probably what swung it as to me it's as much a cider house selling beer as a pub selling cider if that makes any sense at all!

The Red Lion sounds a bit like The Harrow Inn (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/59771/) which has painfully few reviews considering it's such a nationally cherished pub.

I lived in Hackney for many years up until 1988 so knew several pubs in the area but this one doesn't ring any bells. All I know about Hackney (and probably all of inner East London) today is that huge swathes of pubs closed, with some re-opened and gentrified. Some have been simply gentrified. The way I see it is that what were rubbish pubs have become rubbish in a different way.
I'll start a thread for it as you clearly have some ideas which are completely different to mine. My only thought for East London was the Young's Norfolk Arms in Dalston. It's still on the site as a closed pub and was a basic local boozer, although probably newer than the surrounding area.

I've got slightly different figures: 149 pubs have been nominated by 20 people (10 each on average, with Richard's nine balancing my greedy 11). I make it two pubs with four nominations each, nine with three and 27 with 2, the remaining 111 having one each.
I've visited 30 of the top 38, but only 51 of the remaining 111 (or 42 out of 102 if excluding my own nominations).
Aqualung - perhaps you've counted pubs with the same name as duplicates when in fact they are different pubs. For my part, I hadn't realised, until rechecking, that BF's Cask and John's Cask & Kitchen were the same pub in Pimlico (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/22988/) that had its name simplified last year. Perhaps you've made the opposite error with some of the Halfway Houses, Fat Cats, Angels and Crowns?

I've put an edited list into the spreadsheet with consistent names and places so I have 200 entries with an extra one for the title.I don't like using spreadsheets and had to swot up on how to import one from a text file. Nevertheless you're right there were errors but I now have 2 with four, 9 with three and 27 with two, same as you.

As the pub he is talking about is his local I wouldn't take that much store by what he says.

The only blog I look at when I remember is Boak and Bailey. The rest seem to be wannabe journalists so best avoided.

Completely unrelated to this, I got an email from CAMRA earlier saying that the tenants of the Royal Oak in SE1 (it's in our hall of fame!) are leaving next week and that there's a party for them on Friday evening. I expect it will be rammed and I'm away so won't be there. I've only visited it the once so am hardly a regular!

According to the Forum statistics, there are 43 members classed as "active" - not sure if that's an appropriate description for people who spend a lot of time typing on their computers, laptops and mobile devices - and we've now had top 10s from more than half.

Blimey! That's a first and given my Luddite techniques I think that is unlikely. I can think of at least 4 forum contributors that haven't yet posted and I would be delighted if they did. Unlike many other lists this one has actually become a very useful one. When I suggested the idea I didn't really think that it would.

Yes indeed. Though I have more likelihood of reaching the Organ Grinder in Loughborough than the Square & Compass in Worth Matravers, to name just two that have so far eluded me in the top-how-ever-many. But I tend to think that, like my favourite 1970s bands or albums, the pubs I like best are the ones I "discovered" for myself.

Cheers Tris. I visited The Harrow just before Christmas (it had been on the hitlist for a while) - reminds me a litle of The Bell at Aldworth; especially with semi-al fresco Gents. Also managed to see the noted Davy Goodchild during my visit.
The Gardeners is always (to me) the highlight of any trip to Jericho.

You could always open a new account on Pubs Galore Forums, calling yourself, oh I don't know, Thick As A Brick and add your next 10 favourites.
By my reckoning (which is probably wrong) we now have a top 39 from 200 nominations with 3 on four votes, 10 on three votes and 26 on two.
I'm afraid you're a little behind the times there. I now have a Top 44 from 250, with 25 having two supporters, 14 with three, two on four and three joint leaders on five. A total of 179 pubs have been suggested, with so far only one closed pub having been nominated (as far as I know).

I too have a top 44 but with two on 5 votes, four on 4 votes, thirteen on 3 votes and 25 on two votes. that makes 179 pubs from 250 votes with their being 71 duplicates. I've only noticed the one that is closed.

I thought I had it right this time as I crated a Sortkey list with just the pub name and place. I bunged that into the Spreadsheet, sorted it and then did a subtotal count. I had to remove a few trailing spaces. I'm sure there's a better way but I don't like Spreadsheets!

But just to be on the safe side, what about leaving it unpublished until, say, the end of January. (Describing this as a "vote" and then publishing a list of 44 front runners is more likely than not to sway some opinions, IMHO.)

I note that the Harrow at Steep (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/59771/) has not been reviewed since 2013 when Tris39 "felt more like an inconvenience rather than a valued customer" when he bought a round :eek: and found the landlady "standoffish"; and Quinno's review, copied from the dark side, I believe, and with a score of 3 (but dating from 2007, when he was nobbut a callow youth, I estimate :p) is responsible for dragging this pub's average rating down to 5.5, the lowest of the 179 different pubs suggested by the 25 contributors so far. (The average rating for the 176 pubs on the list that have been given a score is 8.5. Thanks for asking.)
I hope Komakino's review of his pre-Christmas visit will be more encouraging. Perhaps the landlady has recently retired, which would certainly seem likely to have given the pub a boost! ;)

The other two reviewers seemed unfazed so perhaps both me and Quinno were unlucky. She's not exactly rude as such, rather a bit "Oh alright then [huff/puff]". In London, this would probably go unnoticed, but when you are in what vies as one of the most idyllic pubs ever (never out of the Good Pub Guide) with a plate of the best and most beautifully prepared pub grub I've ever had, it does grate a bit, especially when there were only about two other customers in on our early afternoon visit. I doubt she has retired as she can't be much older than me; if necessary, best to just let her wash over you and bask in the experience. Otherwise, 9.5/10.

He does have a point I think. One thing that really annoys me is going to a pub doing say 5 or 6 beers and they are all around the 4.0% mark and all standard bitters. If there's only a couple of beers then I more or less expect it. What's the point of doing half a dozen beers if they are all similar? I think I've mentioned before that when confronted with a wide largely unrecognised choice and I know I'm only having one then the adage "When in doubt go for the strongest" comes in handy.
It must also be annoying for the many members of the low abv brigade to find they are paying the same or only pennies less for their 3.8% beer as someone on a 5.5% offering. Weaker standard beer should be cheaper.

When we lived in Sarf London our local pub was a Stonegate JDW clone boasting no less than nine handpumps, which was about five too many given the throughput. Most of the time the whole lot were dispensing Doombar, Pride, Young's Ord, Bombardier, GKIPA, Abbot, Morland's Original, Courage Best, you get the idea. If they were feeling adventurous there might be Hobgoblin. I often resorted to Wifebeater knowing that finding anything in reasonable condition was a lottery.
One time I did moan to Stonegate, and was told "As it stands, we have a regular selection of around 15 ales which we are always changing, but we must still provide what our local customers demand, which as you pointed out is the standard ales such as London Pride, GK IPA and Bombadier. We feel we would be doing our regular customers a disservice if we remove these ales in place of something seasonal or new that they may not like. Our aim is to keep some of our regular ales and alternate our new seasonal ones throughout the summer. At the moment we have Jennings Cumberland, Youngs Burning Gold and Hobgoblin all ready to go on."
I continued to be unimpressed.

I haven’t been ignoring this thread, I’ve been following it with interest and would like to contribute. I just have no idea what my top ten are! I don’t keep my own record on a spreadsheet like some people and have only managed to come up with about half a dozen that I think might be in my top ten. And some of them were prompted by other people’s choices, so may only be there because of that.
I really need to review all my 9’s and 10’s and go from there. I’ve asked Dave for an extract like he did for Quinno, so will hopefully have something soon.

I think we all feel your pain! What I and I suspect several others did was to come up with a top 10 in a single moment. If I had access to all my scores then I'm sure that my list would be vastly different. All lists are largely a bit of fun and this is no exception. I would recommend you just go with your instincts! There's not going to be a jury on your decision but I'm sure that there will be discussion on the final results but none of this is really relevant. Some people prefer some pubs over others. It's not really a big deal!
I haven’t been ignoring this thread, I’ve been following it with interest and would like to contribute. I just have no idea what my top ten are! I don’t keep my own record on a spreadsheet like some people and have only managed to come up with about half a dozen that I think might be in my top ten. And some of them were prompted by other people’s choices, so may only be there because of that.
I'm in similar position of following but not contributing because now I'm medically TT any views I had are out of date by at least 3 years

Right, Dave has kindly provided me a list of all pubs that I have scored 9 or 10. That totalled 26, which I soon narrowed down to 19 for one reason or another. Of those, 7 were obvious candidates, but I really struggled to pick 3 from the remaining 12. So, I'm not sure it is really my top 10, on another day it may well be slightly different, but would be at least 70% the same!

Our aim is to keep some of our regular ales and alternate our new seasonal ones throughout the summer. At the moment we have Jennings Cumberland, Youngs Burning Gold and Hobgoblin all ready to go on."
I continued to be unimpressed.
This pub's selection pretty much perfectly mirrors my least favourite beers and things must be bad when Hobgoblin is considered 'adventurous'. All that's missing is that satanic Thornbridge cucumber brew.:eek:

There are some Wetherspoon outlets that aren't much better but usually on a bad day. I think Stonegate must have an agreement with Marstons as they all seem to stock their beers.

I don't envisage any ranking my list is in alphabetical order. The problem with using ranking is how far do go back. A re-incarnated pub may have poor scores from the previous incarnation. I've already been to two places this year that I would have had to at least consider! I can't make up my mind which should be POTM for January.

I've used average points scores, though obviously they're not meant to be taken too seriously. I've used the average at the time the pub was nominated and I'm not going through 203 pubs again to make sure they haven't changed since...

My list of pubs which I had updated manually was correct apart from miscounting the number with 2 votes. I had errors in my spreadsheet due to two "e"s in Bretforton and a missing "e" in Ye Olde Mitre. It all now tallies and I agree with your totals.

Thanks for that, a more user friendly list than my spreadsheet-pdf. Though I take issue, not for the first time, with the use of the word "vote", which implies a preconceived list that people could support or not. These lists were, instead, the result of collating the independent "Top Tens" of 28 disparate (almost typed dissolute by mistake) Pubs Galore regulars and determining which pubs were, coincidentally, those which had been picked most often. A subtle distinction maybe, but I still think a valid one.

Nomination is a better word but I like four letter words!
I've already looked into Worth Matravers to find that the nearest bus is a long mile away which really rules it out for me.
My single vote for the Hare & Hounds near Hebden Bridge was only made possible by the fact that there is now a decent bus service from HB station which will drop you off and pick you up at the door. Forty years ago it was a walk involving some VERY steep hills but it did include the Mount Skip. They weren't overly strict on afternoon closing which also helped.

I've corrected my spreadheet-pdf on the other thread. A happy result of this is that the average score of the 203 pubs that were nominated has gone up from 8.4 to the slightly more respectable (except for fans of the seven times table) 8.5.

Just 35 of the quintessential 48 for me. Not surprised to find that Leigh has better taste than me! I've had my eye on the Bell at Aldworth and the Organ Grinder in Loughborough for some time, and almost did the Hand & Shears four years ago, but the other 10 are just a bit off the beaten track for me, so too much of a challenge.
I'm reasonably happy with my 105 out of the 203 total nominations - no doubt half a dozen of you have done 120 or more...

I make it 32 for me a few of which were many years ago. The furthest back was the Crown at Stockport which was the first port of call on my first visit to Robinson's brewery and my first visit to Stockport. It was a Boddington's pub then and it was before they ruined the bitter. Old Tom featured later making it a shambolic event!

I make you right there, I think the only problem with some of them is being a victim of their own success but that can be worked around. I hated the Harp on my first Saturday night visit but really liked it before 11:00 on a weekday. The Great Western can be a pain on December Saturdays or if Wolves are at home but only because there are too many supporters.
I spent Friday afternoon and early evening in Wigan Central which I had prevaricated over when choosing 10. I went for the Belper Angel because it's more of a proper micropub and does a fantastic range of beers. I certainly want to revisit Stone, probably going to Stafford late afternoon for a faster train back to Euston.

The Old Spot, Dursley was nominated by Leigh. And the Cricketers in St Helens was nominated by Spinko, so that's four. They didn't appear on Aqualung's truncated list because of failing to garner a seconder.

Just to illustrate how fickle these choices can be these were my thought processes about including a Batham's pub. There are three that I rate more or less the same, The Royal Exchange in Stourbridge, The Vine in Brierley Hill and the Britannia in Upper Gornal. That's why this sort of popular poll is better done blindfold. If it had really been a vote, it could have distorted everyone's view. I'm not sure fickle is the right word here - you had your reasons at the time, as did others. No one is right, no one is wrong.
I've only been to the Vine once, on a fairly drunken coach trip - it wasn't the coach or more importantly the driver that was drunk. My appreciation of the pub was not recorded at the time, because I don't write very good notes after a few beers (or not that I can make out for typing up later, anyway). I take my hat off to reviewing colleagues who seem able to achieve something readable without having to resort to make-believe (see my reviews on the Alan Winfield Memorial Crawl (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/crawl/viewcrawl.php?crawl=1398) for my degenerate efforts).
Whatever the reasons for each of us choosing our top ten, and whether or not they would have been different if we had our time again, it's been fun.
As the title says. Following this comment in another thread;

This is not easy, as I have just discovered. Getting on for 3,800 reviews, I have scored 32 a perfect 10 (0.84%)*. Of these 32, there are a number where I would have the score at 9.5, which knocks about half out. This left 19 to narrow down to 10! I gave favour to those where I have visited more than once - maintaining a 10 across multiple visits is a feat in itself. Then knocked out some where the last visit was more than 5 years ago. Then I filled the last few places with those where I shelved plans to move elsewhere, or I made a revisit during a crawl. Your methodology may be a bit different, of course ;)

I'm only really going to have one pint so whatever happens while in there I'm not too fussed over, WWIII or a fight can happen doesn't bother me. If local enough to me I may revisit in a couple of years time but not going out of my way if other new options available.
I think I'll go with the quirky pubs and ones with no bars as they have something about them over any normal establishment. Am I spoiling the fun for real ale drinkers with my view of a top 10?

Not at all, I like pubs with Railway porn which some people may find a bit weird. There are two on my list plus one or two that came close.

It doesn't have to have real ale for me but it must have something that I enjoyed to drink.I rarely rate a pub if it has only mainstream lagers and Guinness so I found it difficult to find a worst pub of the year as I don't visit worst pubs.Must make pub ticking a bit easier for you?

More than likely my worst pub visits are cask pubs.Poor quality beer pubs always get low scores from me.Had plenty of tastless keg beers but condition is never a problem.

A lot of that problem, at least among the rural pubs I nose around is simply down to demand. Many such pubs could probably last Monday to Thursday on a 36 pint poly pin. When I see three or four pumps clipped up on a midweek afternoon and the few punters are either all on lager at one end or are final-salary lunchers on red wine at the other I know it isn't going to end well.

The only question mark for me would be The Great Western on Wolverhampton which I believe has much less guests ales and is now more of a Holden's tied house.However I'm visiting there in July so will reserve judgement until then.I am visiting the Cask at the end of January as I hear it's back on form with some great ale selection,having gone through a difficult patch during Covid with a much reduced ale line up.

I gave favour to those where I have visited more than once - maintaining a 10 across multiple visits is a feat in itself. Then knocked out some where the last visit was more than 5 years ago. Then I filled the last few places with those where I shelved plans to move elsewhere, or I made a revisit during a crawl. Your methodology may be a bit different, of course ;)

I'm also becoming a harsher marker as I age. I suspect a few 9's I've scored over the past 5 years may well have been 10's back in the early 2010's.
