View Full Version : Quinno's 2018 Challenge

Quinno
30-07-2018, 17:52
After a fallow year, I am back with a new challenge for this year.

It's "county in a (long) weekend". So I'm aiming to do all the pubs in Rutland between opening time on Thursday and late Sunday afternoon along with Jimmy, Deggy and his trusty steed, the Blue Flame.

https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/counties/rutland/

I'll be tweeting @SirQuinno under the hashtag #RutlandWeekendBeervision

Wish me luck

It should be easily doable providing opening hours don't interfere too much.

There will be former Ruddles pubs on your list so here is a list I cobbled up from a 1970s document :-

Don't take the Free tag literally, just about all chain pubs call themselves Free Houses nowadays. I created it a few years ago so it may be out of date.
Good luck with it!!

I vaguely remember Rutland Weekend Television.

Doing halves? I could do that doing pints from Friday to Sunday no problem.

Disclaimer I've looked at a number and no logistics of undertaking said task...

Obviously good luck. Can I come?

A slap-paste of the research - it's the number of late-afternoon closers that are the logistical concern!

Deggy is the chauffeur. Jimmy is a mate of mine (and currently Chair of Reading CAMRA). And we all love a challenge!

I believe the "ceremonial" counties have their traditional boundaries, that is those boundaries that came into existence following the local government reorganisation of the late 1880s.

Talk of boundaries is a can of worms that should be avoided at all times

This is the age-old post-town madness, courtesy of the Royal Mail, which was based on where the postman walked, cycled or rode a horse from in Victorian times to deliver letters rather than administrative boundaries...

I hope the answer is no as I can think of a plethora of more important other discrepancies that really should take preference over this. If your request goes ahead then it will show the site to be an elite club rather than a true and better alternative to the Dark Side which I am fairly certain it has become.

Fair comment, so apologies for what probably appeared to be a swivel-eyed rant!
I went to this (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/39264/) place on Friday that has about as much connection to Wolverhampton as the Borough of Hackney. I got the last bus just after 14:00 to Shifnal via a series of delightful country lanes that are wholly unsuited to a van let alone a full sized bus, and there was no Old Ale on!

Let's have a quick referendum (advisory, of course):

Option 1: Dave to redesign the whole site, ignoring postal towns and traditional counties, and making it possible for anyone who thinks he's done the whole county of Rutland to be able to prove it to his mates by pointing to the stats on a website.

Option 2: Quinno to just suck it up.

In all seriousness, a button to reassign the pub's allotted county may or may not be simple, depending on the architecture of the site. But if one doesn't ask, one will never get.

Option 1 please. :D

In all seriousness, a button to reassign the pub's allotted county may or may not be simple, depending on the architecture of the site. But if one doesn't ask, one will never get.

Reassigning the County wouldn't resolve the greater problem of finding somewhere like Kinver which I knew was in Staffs but comes under W Midlands Stourbridge. That Ackleton place is a similar example.
I don't believe that it's a problem that can be resolved without rebuilding the site which is surely not an option. Who knows what changes may be made to Counties in future years. If you look at the GBG only areas of London with postcodes are sorted by them and "outer" London is sorted by area name. That is further complicated by London being sorted into areas. In my book Chingford is Outer London and this (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/25089/) pub is actually in Essex. Bristol looks like it has just had the old County of Avon renamed and Wales is totally wrong. I believe that Scotland isn't right either.
As a side issue and I won't be going there unless JDW open a pub, why aren't the Channel Islands included here? I'm guessing it wasn't worth the bother.

I'd never noticed that!

That really is an A1 priority to add then. WhatPub lists 12...

I seem recall a thread about this some years ago, but can't now find it... but another oddity is that the Isle of Man - the other Crown dependency - is included (albeit with a postcode mapping issue when adding a new pub).

If for whatever reason Ireland becomes a united country will the NI entries be removed or Eire added? If it were the latter then I could add my reviews of the 5 JDWs over there as well as that bar I went in opposite one of Dublin's railway stations.
