Here we go again.

Good luck to all with their targets / challenges. I will stick to same as usual - 200 new pubs.

I will be pleased to get to 150,but if I push myself and got to 180,that would mean hitting a 1800 review total.

For 2018 I have extended my boat licence to include the Environment Agency waterways which means new pub visits all the way on the Upper Thames from Oxford to Lechlade and then lots more unvisited and/or unreviewed pubs on the Nene,Fens and on the Great Ouse down to Bedford.Throw in a few PuG crawls, and 150 seems quite plausible. Not only ticking off pubs but also some extremities of the inland waterway network.

Being a total landlubber I don't really get this so would you like to elaborate?

I don't really bother too much with this thread but I'm using it to note that I started the year on 1802 reviews. Not all pubs I review on here are new but most are so at least I'll have some sort of figure. Having visited most JDWs I'm expecting to be in the Slow Lane this year but would like to reach 2000 reviews. Now that Southern Railway have reinstated advance tickets I'd like to get to the Harvey's pubs I've not yet been to and the Black Country Ales ones. Another target will be micropubs which finally now seem to be expanding as quickly as I thought they might. I'll take the dodgy opening hours on the chin!

I have a licence for the Canal & River Trust waterways, which cover around 2,000 miles of the inland waterway network. However CRT are not the only navigation authority ,and the Environment Agency manage several river navigations totalling 650 miles (such as The Thames,Medway,Nene,Great Ouse) and you have to puchase a seperate navigation certificate from them for these rivers.EA short term visitor permits are good for visits of a few days, but I have paid for a "Gold Licence" which covers both CRT and EA waterways for the whole of 2018 and intend to get my monies worth !

There are a miriad of other navigation authorities in the UK some charging fees (River Wey ,National Trust),(Basingstoke Canal,Surrey & Hampshire County Councils),(River Cam Conservators in Cambridge)(Broads Authority) while other navigation authorities dont charge anything for leisure craft (Tidal Thames below Teddington,PLA) ,(Tidal Trent below Gainsborough ,AB Ports ),(Middle Level Commissioners),(Witham Navigable Drains ).

There are plans for CRT to absorb the EA navigations ,this should happen in this parliament but the question of what existing licences will cover once the waterways have been combined has yet to be consulted upon.

This is a rather dry subject, hope I've cast some light on it.

How many of the Black Country ales pubs have you done? I really like them as a chain and they seem to be growing all the time. Not sure if you are aware but they have put out a real ale trail. You can pick up a collector card and the aim is to visit 30 of their pubs by the end of March and get your card stamped. Quite an undertaking for a rugby shirt but you may be up for it!

Only 10 so far, I saw their ale trail poster in Stafford, but I've got most of my rail tickets booked up until the end of March so won't attempt it. The only one I wasn't so keen on was the Leicester King's Head. When I went to the Leicester Salmon it was a Banks's pub! The Lych Gate in Wolverhampton always seems to have an interesting selection and is handy for that Slaters bar.

My total reviews have risen to 1820 making 18 new reviews for January. The days are slowly getting longer and the head banging Winter ales are dying out so I hope to considerably increase that total in the coming months. Even if that doesn't happen I'm still on target to break the 2000 barrier this year.

I see the Castle in Tooting (one of the original Young's 135 from back in the day) had only Sambrooks. I wonder if with the transfer of Wells to Marston the beer supply agreement is null and void. I always thought that Wandle and Junction were copies of Ordinary and Special.

I've got a stay in North Wales booked for most of next week travelling on Tuesday and returning Saturday but the weather forecast is causing concern. My March total (and probably the year's one) is in tatters. I went to North Wales at the very end of February and have four reviews to write up from Machynlleth but nothing else. On March 1st I went to the JDW in Pwllheli to find Big Bog Quagmire with a St Davids Day discount which with a 50p voucher made it £1.56 a pint until a staff member realised I was getting a double discount so moved onto the Black Dragon Cider.
When I returned to Llanbedr station which is in a very exposed location on a small stretch of marshland an Easterly gale was blowing the strength of which I've only seen the likes of around the summit of Snowdon. The next day after several and on-going power cuts it transpired that nothing was running due to fallen trees. In the upper part of Llanbedr a man had a cardiac arrest but an ambulance couldn't get through to save him because of five fallen trees.
I spent the entire Friday in the Ty Mawr where the Butty Bach was in good form although not a favourite and also enjoyed an early Great Orme Snowdon Lager.
On Saturday there were no trains running and found myself going down with a bout of cellulitis (it's a nasty virus in the blood) in my right leg which I could do nothing about and it meant the Butty Bach the day before was and still is my last alcoholic drink.
I got back to London on the Sunday via the only train and Crewe to find that oral antibiotics were not enough so had a two week spell in hospital receiving administered into my veins. I'm out now and on oral antibiotics but at the moment don't feel like a drink at all.

So, once I add the 4 Mach reviews my total for the year is 50. I may get to some new London pubs over Easter, it depends how I feel. I certainly won't be missing out on Devon next month, Northern Ireland or the two new Norfolk JDWs which will see the UK complete for me.

Thanks to everyone. The girlfriend of the bloke who runs the pub side of the Ty Mawr may have hit the nail on the head when on the Saturday she asked "Do you think you may have been overdoing it slightly?".
Given that on the Friday I was due to visit the 3 Robinson's places in Beddgelert, a much more sober day than hurling back pint after pint of Butty Bach. she may well have been right.

This has always been my sort of thing, the "prize" at the end of it being completely irrelevant with the exception of collecting three K&B passports which gave you three annual freebies at the brewery. What do you have to do to complete it?
I've got an engraved pint glass in the name of Sir Herbert Gusset (shurely a collectors item?) for going round 25 Charles Wells pubs in the 1990s many of which were is inner London and very ill advised purchases.

66 new reviews for me this year. "Proper" pubs in Southern England and other places continue to disappoint, usually because of the ridiculous prices. The idea of going around pubs in Inner London is never going to happen.

Now up to 86 reviews. Sadly the 5 Eire JDWs next week won't count but as much dross as possible that I can pick up in Holyhead will.

We are on 65 new ones for 2018, mainly due to the excellent monthly coach trip we get out on to various parts of the country. July was River Avon pubs, and August was to be Salisbury, but has been changed to Newark area, and all pubs listed are new to us. Looking forward to a few days in York next week, with a day trip out to Sheffield, but too many favourite pubs will be visited. Are there any new must visit places in York does anyone know?

That depends on when you last visited,

Brew York (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/84010/) isn't that new but it's different and most people like it,

I haven't visited these new openings and there are no reviews on here yet,

Piccadilly Tap / Cuckoo (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/86537/)

I was just interested to know how many actual visits to pubs I would make in the year, by comparison with the number of first visits to pubs I've never been to before. Without counting abroad pubs/bars/beer selling places I've drank in on holiday over the year I got to 678 for the year in UK. With no obvious way to filter names The Royal Oak and The Anchor will be more than 10 visits pubs ~40+ each evenly I suspect.

Not at all. Just a database and a COUNTIF formula. When I got to a duplicate name I simply added a 2 to it: so the Black Horse, Whitby would become Black Horse2. (Another way would be to change the COUNTIF formula so that it looks at the location as well as the pub name, but I was trying to keep it simple, at the expense of being a little bit too hands on.)

Can I bring this thread back down to earth by saying that I don't use spreadsheets which is why I can only use reviews posted on this site for any stats and I also DON'T have a smart phone and have no intention of getting one.
I wanted to make an online payment into my nephew's bank account last week and found that I couldn't as I need a card reader, so much for "convenient" online banking. If this stupid card reader device is Wi-Fi then I'm stuffed as my Deskstop PC is linked directly to the phone. As Blur said in the 1990s "Modern Life Is Rubbish". I look forward to the day when a huge Solar event knocks out all the satellite communications!

We should have an agreed format for spreadsheets... While I'm aware of COUNTIF mine isn't set up to work that way I don't think and my counts are on a separate tab with previous dates on another tab in another column of all pubs visited. 2019 New Years Resolution make mega stat spreadsheet.

Card reader isn't wifi just need card and pin number and the reader the bank should've sent you.
