There's two JDWs in that list, that won't go down well in certain quarters. Some of the group will be revolting!

Good grief! It's two years since I went to Coventry and enjoyed it a lot more than I expected. I only went to one non-Spoons which has now closed. One problem is that it's further than I would like to walk between the centre and Earlsdon but there are buses. On the plus side it's fairly easily accessible by rail from most of England.

If it was then I've been hung out to dry! There are certainly better places in the Midlands.

How very dare you! It was a serious suggestion after reading someone or others blog, Retired Martin? BRAPA? anyway one of them bloggy things and it looked OK

Yes there are better places in the Midlands but we've done Brum, we've done Rugby and Leicester and we've done the best of the Black Country so where next?

Could be Stourbridge (closed during the day?)
Walsall
West Bromwich
Worcester
Severn Valley Railway or just Kidderminster
Warwick
Lichfield
Nuneaton

I was thinking more Stafford, Loughborough or Newcastle Under Lyme. Surely Stourbridge pubs are open at 12:00 on a Friday? It isn't on the main drag rail wise but for rail enthusiasts that haven't yet been on the "Boneshaker Shuttle" it may add kudos.
I went to Warwick recently and was unimpressed. I mainly went as it's less than a fiver each way for me and I wanted to visit the Project William pub. I also wanted to make sure that the hordes of tourist shoppers no longer got on the train at Bicester (they don't). At least the JDW was much improved.

I believe General Stahl has done a route of a decent crawl on the SVR.

I believe General Stahl has done a route of a decent crawl on the SVR.

It's quite expensive (http://www.svr.co.uk/Fares.aspx), but might be worth it. Tickets booked in advance are £18.80 (or £17.30 for those in their 60s) plus a booking fee. If we knew in advance who was going, we could do the booking for the whole party and only pay one £1.75 fee, rather than all of us paying it individually.

Have you seen the suggested route by Gen.Stahl?

oldboots
13-10-2017, 16:17
It was Andy Ven, another mate of Soup Dragon, https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/crawl/viewcrawl.php?crawl=482

It may need a little tweeking as it's quite old, there are a few good pubs in Kidderminster and there's the brewery tap in Bewdley (although quite a way from the station and limited opening but near the Little Pack Horse) and the Woodcolliers is closed, it was rumoured to be reopening when I was in Bewdley. Agreed the cost is steep but we could mitigate it as you suggest.

We had a great time in Stockport. I'm feeling brave and would like to put Brighton forward as a possibility for the next crawl. I know summer would be nicer, but also busier. What do you think?

I typed more last night, then somehow managed to delete it by accident. Grrr

Brighton is a great destination, I would love to do it with the crew, its not a problem for me to get to but possibly a bit far for those beyond the Watford Gap?

I like the idea of Brighton but there's no way I'm going there in summer! We usually have a mid- to late March crawl, and I would support Brighton for that.

I can't summon up a huge amount of enthusiasm about Coventry, but the Midlands venue that got me interested was the suggestion of the Severn Valley Railway to Bridgnorth. That would be a very nice summer trip.

You're right there it was murder on a sunny Saturday in June, the school holidays don't bear thinking about. Apart from being ridiculously expensive, there is another problem with Brighton in that Southern Railway not only cancel half their trains but they seem to have permanently stopped doing cheap advance tickets. I don't know if Thameslink (or whatever they call themselves now) do them at all. There's a pretty rubbish gWr service from Bristol way but Cross Country services don't seem to go there at all now.

I would be very happy to support the idea of Brighton as the next "southern" venue and March would be a very good time (Not March 30th Good Friday).I agree with others to avoid the summer months,so November is an alternative for Brighton in 2018.

The Severn Valley Railway also sounds like a fun idea for a "midland" venue ,a bit more interesting than Coventry .Having said that if Coventry gets the nod,I know it quite well and there is probably just enough to get your teeth into for a PuG crawl. However it's not in the same league as Stockport.

Brighton was definitely mentioned by someone during the Stockport do. Obviously an overnighter for me but probably not a problem with notice. March sounds good but not the first or last weekend, so that's 9th, 16th or 23rd. The South is next in line for a crawl I believe.

Coventry is the venue for CAMRA's national AGM in April and I suspect a few of us may be there to watch CAMRA implode (or not) so a PuG do could be elsewhere for the Midlands crawl. The Severn Valley Railway would be a good summer crawl and it counts as Midlands, but we have mentioned the cost of tickets what with it being a preserved line.

Brighton on one of these dates looks a possibility (but, although fairly close, it is still a ridiculous three changes of trains each way!).

That'll be from Victoria. Usually cheaper from Blackfriars or London Bridge, ~£18, and the trains are not as knackered as they used to be.
Without wanting to seem rude John, do you have a freedom pass? If so, book your travel from East Croydon, £15.80rtn (thameslink) or specific trains currently available at £5e/w.

The fiver gets discounted with snr railcard but not with my network railcard (presumably on the basis of minimum fares on weekdays).

Got me thinking about the southern daysave though and, yes, it seems they are finally available online again after only being so from 'the other end' for a few years.
These are great if travelling in a group, £39 for 4 adults hop-on, hop-off, anywhere on southern network after 10am weekdays, anytime weekends. I followed the link to tickets and it actually came to £38 total.

The Basketmakers Arms (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10366/)
The Prince Albert (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10351/)

Thanks for starting the ball rolling, OB.

I've reordered these initial suggestions to make a circuit (starting and ending with the two nearest the station) and Google maps makes it just under four miles (similar to Stockport, but this is before we add any wild cards!).

I've been to six of these (not the Admiral, the Hanover or the Mitre). You can read my reviews of the Basket Makers (my view was skewed by the depletion of available beers and the superabundance of fried fish), the Prince Albert (a suitable last port of call, I think) and the Victory. My favourite of these was the Victory. The Evening Star would be a good place to start a crawl as it's handy for the station. I liked the Beer Dispensary, not so much the Craft Beer Co.

In addition, I've reviewed the following: the Southover (quite a long way out but not as far as the Hanover), Cricketers (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10413/), Foundry, Earth & Stars, Black Horse (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10380/), Waggon & Horses, Mash Tun (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10494/). I liked the Waggon & Horses (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10620/). The Earth & Stars (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/54251/) and the Foundry (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10519/)are not far from the Prince Albert, so might make suitable wild cards for those who have time and capacity before their trains.

I had a look in the King & Queen (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10473/) but didn't have a drink (only one real ale on, I think) and had a drink in the Prince George (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10531/), but was suffering from Delhi belly at the time so have little to no recollection of the pub. The Seven Stars (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/66796/) used to be a nice Fullers pub but is now a ghastly craft ale bar. The North Laine (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/78500/) will float the boats of some people.

I've reviewed these in Kemptown (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/areas/kemptown/east-sussex/): Saint Georges, Barley Mow, Thomas Kemp, Hand in Hand, Saint James. An idea: these might do for anyone who's planning on spending Thursday night in Brighton?

There's a bit of a gap in the above (very early draft) route between the Victory and the Hanover. This could be filled by the Waggon & Horses, the North Laine, The Geese (Have Gone Over The Water) (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10436/) (Nice review from Paul of Horsham) (NB opens at 4pm) and the Southover (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10554/) (NB opens at 3pm) without affecting the overall distance very much. (Or we could go up via the Admiral to the Hanover, then down via Southover and Geese before cutting across the Level to the Mitre.)

Similarly, it might be a good idea to go from the Dispensary to the sea front and along towards the pier, then cut inland on Black Lion Street to the Cricketers before the Victory, rather than try to find a route through the back streets and miss out the sea altogether.

So, here we go (1st draft):

1. The Evening Star (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10425/)
2. The Craft Beer Co (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10534/)
3. Brighton Beer Dispensary (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/70533/)
4. Cricketers (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10413/)
5. The Victory Inn (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10618/)
6. Waggon & Horses (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10620/)
7. North Laine (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/78500/)
8. The Geese (Have Gone Over The Water) (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10436/)
9. Southover (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10554/)
10. The Hanover (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53907/)
11. The Admiral (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10349/)
12. Mitre Tavern (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10498/)
13. The Basketmakers Arms (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10366/)
14. Foundry (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10519/)
15. Earth & Stars (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/54251/)
16. The Prince Albert (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10351/)

OK, hope this stimulates some discussion, especially from people who live near Brighton and may have been to other pubs more recently than I have been to these. (Or been to these and want to disagree with me!)

Cheers

From Brighton to Luton to Sheffield, that is quite a trip!

It would be rude not to join you all as I only live 30 minutes along the coast from Brighton. As far as I know, I've been to all the pubs in Brighton (except the Richmond which I will pop into at some point during the day). Many have changed ownership, and name, since my visits so it will be interesting to see how they have changed.

This could be filled by the Waggon & Horses, the North Laine, The Geese (Have Gone Over The Water) (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10436/) (Nice review from Paul of Horsham) (NB opens at 4pm) and the Southover (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10554/) (NB opens at 3pm) without affecting the overall distance very much. (Or we could go up via the Admiral to the Hanover, then down via Southover and Geese before cutting across the Level to the Mitre.)

Similarly, it might be a good idea to go from the Dispensary to the sea front and along towards the pier, then cut inland on Black Lion Street to the Cricketers before the Victory, rather than try to find a route through the back streets and miss out the sea altogether.

So, here we go (1st draft):

1. The Evening Star (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10425/)
2. The Craft Beer Co (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10534/)
3. Brighton Beer Dispensary (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/70533/)
4. Cricketers (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10413/)
5. The Victory Inn (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10618/)
6. Waggon & Horses (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10620/)
7. North Laine (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/78500/)
8. The Geese (Have Gone Over The Water) (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10436/)
9. Southover (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10554/)
10. The Hanover (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53907/)
11. The Admiral (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10349/)
12. Mitre Tavern (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10498/)
13. The Basketmakers Arms (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10366/)
14. Foundry (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10519/)
15. Earth & Stars (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/54251/)
16. The Prince Albert (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10351/)

OK, hope this stimulates some discussion, especially from people who live near Brighton and may have been to other pubs more recently than I have been to these. (Or been to these and want to disagree with me!)

Cheers

A decent list Will, not been to Brighton for about 18 months and 7 new ones on there for me, one pub I quite like, not far from the station is The Great Eastern (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10444/) despite the beer tending to be a bit pedestrian for my taste.I also enjoyed The Quadrant (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10537/) more than I was expecting to.

Yes, I have a liking for the Great Eastern but agree they could improve with a better ale offering. Surprised Lord Nelson doesn't make the long list despite my feeling that lazy management has deserved a Harveys brewery visit, and subsequent replacement, for a very long time. Not looked at potential route but I also like(d) the Lion and Lobster (I think it changed hands now?), also close to Bankers chippy on West Street. I never spent much time in the laines, have to leave room for a joker at Evening Star, and last visits to Prince Albert have certainly seen that in the ascendancy.

I also like the Stanley Arms, 10 mins down the line at Fishersgate, although I haven't made it last couple of trips, doesn't open until 15:00 Weds-Fri.

Great work Will, this is going to be an excellent crawl.

Thoughts for version 2.

I noticed that WhatPub is quoting Craft Beer Co. opening at 4pm.If that pub get pushed further back in the running order,I then wonder if the crawl may arrive at The Geese before their 4pm opening ? You have mentioned an alternative order for this part of the crawl namely Admiral,Hanover,Southover,Geese,Mitre which might work better.

Well spotted, BF! If that's the case, then we might have to go in the opposite direction, i.e. clockwise, starting with the Prince Albert. Which may raise doubts about opening times for some of those in the town centre. (Assuming that no one comes up with a good reason for leaving Craft Beer Co out altogether. :D)

This website (http://drinkinbrighton.co.uk/) might be of interest.

Why not slip the Craft Beer Company in after #15 Earth & Stars ,they seem quite close together ? Your original anti clockwise route looked very elegant ,a shame to disturb that idea.

The only pubs of the 16 on version 1 that are NOT open at noon are Craft Beer Co (4),Geese (4) and Southover (3).

Glad you approve of anticlockwise!

The Earth & Stars is really only an afterthought for those with the capacity for more beer and in no great hurry to catch a train. I have however spotted that the Craft Beer Co's website says they open at 12 noon on Fridays, so I've sent them an email to ask which is correct. I'll update this thread when I get a reply.

Just had an email from a guy who describes himself as the GM at Craft - they're going to open at 12 on that Friday! (I didn't even have to ask. Or use the magic words "Pubs Galore".)

Discussion of opening times caught my eye, I thought I'd added them to the pub pages but for some reason had only done so for mobile version! :muppet:

Anyway, if the Facebook page for the pub has opening times we now have them displayed near the bottom of the pub page.

I mentioned the Hand in Hand as part of a possible Kemptown meander for anyone with time on Thursday or Saturday - again, it's a bit of a stretch when the draft route is already more than four miles!

Maybe you could have a look at:
Fiddlers Elbow (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10426/)
Lion & Lobster (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10481/) (pushing the walking limits, but could swing by if looking to catch a view of the sea from the Dispensary)
Lord Nelson (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10484/)
Sir Charles Napier (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10568/)

I included Lion & Lobster in my second version (not yet published), but have got cold feet since, as it looks like it has changed hands and the beer policy is unknown (in fact, I can't find any mention of beer on their website (http://www.thelionandlobster.co.uk/) except for a glimpse of two hand pumps in a video: Doom Bar and Harveys Best).

Great work Will, this is going to be an excellent crawl.

Hmm. Not sure I share your confidence! Looking at the original suggestions from OB, which are the nine GBG 2018 entries:

The Admiral (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10349/)
The Basketmakers Arms (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10366/)
Brighton Beer Dispensary (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/70533/)
The Craft Beer Co (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10534/)
The Evening Star (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10425/)
The Hanover (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53907/)
Mitre Tavern (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10498/)
The Prince Albert (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10351/)
The Victory Inn (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10618/)

I would say that, based on my recent experience, I could heartily recommend six of them. I didn't much like the Basketmakers when I was there, but that was a matter of bad timing (beer range had depleted over new year) and personal objection to smell of fried fish. Also it's a Fullers pub, which may not be everyone's favourite brewer. I've not been in the Hanover, but it is a sister pub of the Southover, which I added to the first draft even though I dislike their policy of charging much more for a half pint than half the price of a pint (see review (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10554/) - same policy applies in both pubs). I've also not been to the Mitre, where it appears the landlord has died since the GBG surveys would have been completed and there's been a period of closure and a reopening, if I recall correctly. It's a Harveys pub, which I like but again may not suit everyone.

In the first draft (see #52 (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?26508-Brighton-Spring-2018/page6&p=91287#post91287) of this thread) the remainder are four pubs that I liked when I was in Brighton in early January last year, plus the North Laine (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/78500/) brewhouse, which I am sure some people will enjoy; and also the Geese on the basis of a review by Paul of Horsham and because the route takes us into that street and it would be rude not to.

In my second version I will be adding two or three of the suggestions made by Strongers (the Lion & Lobster about which I'm now having doubts, plus the Lord Nelson and Charles Napier, respectively Harveys & Fullers). And the Quadrant, suggested by Mick, because it looks interesting and fills a slight gap between Evening Star and Craft Beer Co.

My impression of most other pubs in the town centre is that they cater for tourist trade, a lot of them food led of course, and while they have as many as four hand pumps they always include something mainstream like Doom Bar or something not too challenging from a local brewery (Harveys, Long Man, Brighton Bier). This applies just as much to the four that I have added as personal preferences (Waggon & Horses, Foundry, Earth & Stars and Cricketers), so these are meant as wild cards and some people may find them disappointing. (I haven't been to the Bath Arms (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10368/) for many years, but then neither have any of our other reviewers, seemingly. This may be a good option if the Cricketers is too crowded.)

That gets us to around 20 pubs, which is not quite a Winfield but more than enough for most people - especially as the walking distances come to just over six miles (if visiting all 20), according to Google maps. Obviously, people can pick and choose which of the wild cards they visit and reduce their drinking/walking accordingly. For example, seven or eight of the GBG pubs plus four or five wild cards makes a nice round dozen! (BTW the longest single stretch of walking is 15 minutes between the Beer Dispensary and the Cricketers/Bath Arms/Victory in the Lanes if going via the seafront.)

I'd be grateful for feedback before I put the final polish to my second version. There's still room for suggestions for additions as well as for criticism of those already included (two Harveys pubs? two Fullers pubs? - you cannot be serious!).

6 miles? I walk at 3mph, or slower back up from the front to the station so, if I make it, I won't be using 2 hours of my day (from maybe 7 hrs in Brighton) on the hoof.
No offence, but may have to cherry pick on this one. It's all a mobile feast anyway, eh?

None taken. Cherry picking is what you're expected to do.

As I tried to explain, it would be crazy to try to do all 20 pubs *. But I know that some people will want to tick off as many as possible, so I didn't want to say, "here's 11 pubs, that's yer lot".

* No offence intended to Mr Winfield, of course.

I'll be passing on this one for several reasons :-

Brighton is too expensive.
Since the demise of K&B, Gales and pub chain Beards to GK it's not the attraction it once was.
The following day is a Division 1 & 2 football free day because of some stupid friendly internationals. I can't afford to miss a football free Saturday in (as it happens) Liverpool.

The Mitre is a Harvey's tied house which I went to once over 30 years ago and had a rank pint (I dare say it's improved!). There's a third one that I don't know called the Constant Service but it's a late opener and sounds like a trendy dump.
If anyone's down there for a few days there's a string of micropubs between Hove and Worthing.
If I were going my cherry picking would consist of all day in the Evening Star!

6 miles is akin to a yomp with the SAS not a pub crawl.I will not last that route march but if that's the itinerary so be it. I would prefer a clockwise route
so
even star
prince al
earth +star
wagon and h
foundry
basketmakers
north laine
all seem to in a a reasonable close area

then across to the
geese
southover
hanover
admiral
then a bus into town to do the rest
.I have have come up with this route with limited knowledge of the pubs in Brighton (now if it was the jewellery shops in the Laines.Im your man) So this may not be a better route.

Some thoughts, mostly in response to Will's post number 52 (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?26508-Brighton-Spring-2018&p=91287&viewfull=1#post91287) (and I know there have been subsequent comments). I'm not planning to join the crawl, so make of my comments what you will. I could meet after work, though, if the group is still going (and reasonably coherent).

The most obvious thought is that you have a three pubs out on a bit of a limb from the rest. The first is Brighton Beer Dispensary (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/70533/). I can see why this is on the list, but it does take you a fair way to the west. I see a return via The Lion and Lobster (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10481/) has been suggested, but that's taking you further west still. Perhaps The Royal Sovereign (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10559/) would be an alternative? You could take a chance on The Tempest (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/54308/) or Fortune of War (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10428/) on Kings Road Arches (or just walk on by).

I would, in any case, recommend that you try to avoid heading directly along Western Road and North Street, as these are the main shopping roads, as well as the route of all the cross-town buses. On a Friday, it's going to be pretty busy!

On the other side of town, you've picked both The Southover (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10554/) and The Hanover (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53907/). These are Indigo Pubs - a good local operator, don't get me wrong. Each of their pubs tries to come up with a slightly different offering, but there are enough similarities for you to possibly be thinking "isn't this quite a lot like the last pub we were in?". Not only that, but Southover Street itself is a steep old climb which some of the group may not appreciate. I'd be inclined to stick to the lower slopes of Hanover on a crawl of this length. If you are visiting The Geese Have Gone Over The Water (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10436/), some of you might also like to drop in on The Greys (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10447/) across the road which is currently under threat of closure. It may be gone by the time you get there but it could also be a "last chance to see". If you're then heading to (or from) The Admiral (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10349/) (a new one on me, so thanks for the tip-off), both The Village (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10464/) and The Reservoir (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10423/) look interesting, with a bit of money spent recently.

Lastly, as far as the crawl goes, is the consideration of where to finish - the last few pubs at least, since it'll be a Friday night, with Easter approaching and the last day of University term, it's likely to be busy. The North Laine (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/78500/) is pretty big and does attract quite a crowd (which is good), but also gets pretty loud inside (which is not so good). The Lord Nelson (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10484/) (a Harveys pub, with about 6 from the range on the pumps) usually has a fair amount of room inside, and The Prince Albert (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10351/) a few doors up, not so much.

A couple more you might consider: The Independent (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10621/)(more Queen's Park than Hanover) and Brighton Bierhaus (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10612/), on the edge of Kemp Town.

For those staying a little longer, you might want to venture a little further afield. If it's micropubs you're after, there's The Watchmakers (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/82909/) in Hove (a superior example of the genre, up there with The Brooksteed and One In The Wood) and The Old Star (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/82375/) in Shoreham (just following the standard formula in my view). Also in Shoreham is The Wellington (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53661/), run by Rob Jones formerly of Dark Star Brewery (but still no brewing on site, I believe). The Westbourne (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10922/) between Hove and Portslade always seems to get good reviews. In Portslade itself, The Railway Inn (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10625/) (note name change) has had a recent makeover and, back in Brighton and near to the station (though uphill!), The West Hill (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10378/) has also changed hands not so long ago (with 'big plans' from the new owners).

Out east, the only one that springs to mind is The Bevy, (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/76376/) notable as being the first community-run estate pub. Fortunately, there's a bus stop outside, so no need to be wandering the local streets late at night.

Talking of which, local buses are mostly fairly high-quality and high-frequency though also high-fare, without a bit of forward planning. Local trains are by Southern.

Hope you enjoy your day - as I said quite a few paragraphs back, I may be able to join you for the evening.

Thanks for your thoughts Paul, always helpful to get some up to date info, hope to bump into you early evening.

I second this ,Paul's information is very helpful, which prompts two thoughts from me.

Firstly his though that the crawl should stick to the lower slopes of Hanover also chime with concerns about the length of the crawl.

Secondly,we will all be departing Brighton at different times and several may be staying overnight. It would be good to have a selection of pubs at the end of the crawl which are near the station.

There are so many interesting pubs in Brighton maybe we are faced with too much choice. So how about this route ?

Core pubs ----- (wild cards)
1. Evening Star *
2. Quadrant (Earth & Stars)
3. Craft Beer Co.
4. Brighton Beer Dispencery
5 Royal Sovereign ( Lion & Lobster)

Fairly close to the list I worked out however I'm confused about the Craft Beer Co and Brighton Beer Dispensary/Royal Sovereign as the Brighton Beer Dispensary is nearer the Craft Beer Co and the town centre than the Royal Sovereign, the Lion & Lobster is a bit further towards Hove as Paul says.

My intention is to do the hilly North East bit (Mitre, Admiral,Hanover, Southover, Geese, Sir Charles Napier and now it seems The Village and The Reservoir too, and I might possibly add the Great Eastern) on Thursday night so I'd miss them out on Friday but that's just me.

My preferred route would be anti-clockwise as some "better" pubs are near the start and it ends near the station. We haven't nominated a start point or time yet.

*Evening Star
*Brighton Beer Dispensary
*Craft Beer Co
Quadrant
*Victory
Cricketers
Earth & Stars
Waggon & Horses
Foundary
*Basketmakers
North Laine
Great Eastern

My apologies I meant the Brighton Beer Dispensary close to Craft Beer Co. but also quite near the Royal Sovereign.

I thought the proposal was to start in The Evening Star but the time not yet fleshed out . It's handy for those arriving by train that morning, opens at 11.30am

That's really helpful, Paul.

I remember when we did Leeds a few years ago, me and Old Boots and Ale&Hearty bashed out a route between us over a pint in Otley. It's so much harder to do on the forum. Also, there have been so many changes in pubs in recent years (Leeds & Brighton both) and it is so difficult to know what to expect when there are so many pretty good pubs and not that many gems, and when the review coverage is a little patchy in the last three or four years (and this applies to WhatPub just as much as PuG). So it's been very helpful to get Paul's thoughts.

I think the point about the hill up to the Hanover and the Southover, and the possible duplication, is a good one. (But isn't the Reservoir also an Indigo pub?) Also about not going too far west. My initial suggestions of some of the back street pubs in the town centre were meant as fillers until someone came up with something better and I'm happy to drop those now that we have some better ideas.

Old Boots makes a good interjection - he's planning on doing Hanover area plus the Mitre on Thursday. (I'm planning on going west on Thursday to include The Watchmakers in Hove and a few others in that direction.) So I think what we need to do is reduce the scope of this crawl by a) not going too far west, b) cutting out some of the hill and c) only doing the best of the city centre.

A huge list can be daunting for those who like to take their drinking at a leisurely pace, but too short a list can be a bit underwhelming for the sprinters among us. I quite like BF's list of core pubs and wild cards, and agree that the Evening Star which opens at 11:30 would be a suitable gathering place. The Craft Beer Co have said they will open at 12 but we don't have to all be there on the dot.

No one has objected to a leisurely walk along the prom, so I propose heading for the sea after the Dispensary, then (if the Tempest and/or Fortune of War do not tempt) into town for the best of the Lanes pubs which is clearly the Victory.

I would then suggest it would be a choice between the traditional Basketmakers (Fullers) and the modern North Laine, then heading for the lower slopes of Hanover (Geese, Napier, Reservoir, Admiral) before a choice of Harveys pubs (Mitre, Nelson) and a final stop at the Albert which is handy for the station.

What I'm saying is, there's lots of pubs to choose from, and nothing that is so outstanding that it would be a shame to miss it. (For example, I only added the Waggon & Horses and the Foundry to make up the numbers until better suggestions arrived, so I've dropped them in the list below.) But on the other hand, the point about going around in a group is to do the pubs together (without necessarily all arriving at the same time and spending most of the crawl queuing at the bar!). So, here's some sort of compromise:

11:30 Evening Star (Wild Card: Quadrant) (Sprinters: Earth & Stars)
12:00 Craft Beer Co
12:45 Beer Dispensary (Sprinters: Lion & Lobster or Royal Sovereign)
Interlude: stroll along the seafront
(Wild Cards: Tempest, Cricketers, Bath Arms)
13:45 Victory
14:30 Choice: Basketmakers or North Laine
15:00 Tapas: Geese, Napier, Southover, Hanover, Reservoir
16:00 Admiral
16:45 Harveys choice: Mitre or Lord Nelson
(Wild Card: Great Eastern)
17:30 Prince Albert and/or back to the Evening Star!

That's a "core" of six pubs, two straight choices (making eight) plus a tapas on Hanover (one or two, maybe - ok, three at most) making 10 altogether. Add a wild card or two, or one or two from the sprinters menu, and there's a round dozen. I make it 23 pubs in total on that list, a veritable Winfield, which of course no one would reasonably expect to do in the time available. (Times, by the way, are just a rough guide at this stage.)

Perhaps we should start thinking about firming up the times. Who's staying over, who's got a train to catch, that sort of thing. I mean there's no point aiming to get to the Prince Albert at 17:30 if no one has a six o'clock train to catch! (I'm staying in Brighton both Thursday and Friday nights.)

Reading back through this thread, there are a lot of pubs getting positive mentions and everyone's got their ideas of the pubs they want to do. In an attempt to give the day some sort of cohesion, I've put together an approximate itinerary (with walking times from Google maps). A bit like herding cats, as always, but if we have some sort of timetable there's a better chance of bumping into each other from time to time...

Evening Star, Craft Beer Co, Beer Dispensary, Admiral and Prince Albert all stock real cider, possibly Victory as well. Not sure about the Hanover pubs, as I've not done many of them and I don't think the Basketmakers or the two Harvey's pubs are likely to have much beyond the usual Strongbow/Magners type of option.

In the unlikely event of Network Rail and Southern/Thameslink being able to run a reliable train service on the day, I'd hope to catch you in the Prince Albert just before 6:00. I can keep tabs on any postings as the day progresses.

Anybody who fancies a few souvenirs, or one or two for the train home, might like to call in on Trafalgar Wines on the way up Trafalgar Street (https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.828205,-0.1378001,3a,75y,200.37h,86.49t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1steVs74yi3eLO5xQsWcR6YA!2e0!7i1 3312!8i6656). You won't all fit in at once, and anybody unsteady on their feet is advised to give it a miss as it's really not a large place. Trafalgar Wines (http://www.trafalgarwines.co.uk/about/) is, though, a great craft beer off-licence, with a huge range, right across the price range.

If we decided to do 4 of the tapas as a group I think it could happen and yes that would be very decadent.

Hope you have a good journey down. We're just about to head off and will likely be out in Hove tonight - planning to try out the The Watchmakers Arms (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/82909/) and will probably have a quick one in Cliftonville Inn (JD Wetherspoon) (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10929/) if they have the festival rhubarb cider. Then meeting up with some people in The Blind Busker (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10944/) from about 7:30. If you are around Hove and fancy catching up let me know.

Already bumped into Will.. we are staying along Brighton sea front this evening and then finishing with a couple in the back streets of Kempton near our digs. So see you all tomorrow

Have a great day in Brighton  :bemerry:

I am sorry that I couldn't make it. A day in Manchester with "Chester Camra" yesterday was compensation.

A fantastic day out and thanks to Will for compiling such an eclectic choice. I'm also pleased that I was persuaded to go to The Watchmakers in Hove with Will and Mr. and Mrs. Ale.

After the Evening Star, I had over an-hour-and-a-half to go into lone wolf mode and visit:

The Railway Bell (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10545/)
Grand Central (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10506/)
Battle of Trafalgar (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10369/)
Sussex Yeoman (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10594/)
The Edinburgh (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10597/)

As you can see, made it to the Isle of Sheppey yesterday, managed to do 11 more pubs including micros. Really enjoyed Brighton on Friday, great pubs and great company too. Thanks to Will for putting together a great itinerary.

On another micro mission today...

I was in Sittingbourne yesterday for a Camra meeting so can't have missed you by much at some time during the day.

Will, pleased to see you made it out to the Stanley!

Yes, I liked the Stanley (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53630/) on the Thursday evening. Also the micropub (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/82909/) near Hove station, which a few of us did as an afterthought on the Friday. (It was very busy and they were short-staffed, but both service and beer were exemplary.)

My favourite pub on the crawl, which I think I may have been the only one to do, what with it being at the top of the hill, was the Hanover (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53907/).

Not too far from The Hanover, I found the Southover (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/10554/) Worth a look.
