The current CAMRA backlash shows no sign of abating. Here's a piece from Leeds blogger 'Beer & Whine' which ostensibly attacks the more vociferous elements within the membership, but really attacks the whole movement. There's certainly some forthright opinions and 'interesting' logic: Did you know CAMRA are contributing to the death of cask beer? No? Neither did I. Have to love the statement, from an obvious fan of the craft beer movement, complaining about the 'feeling of arrogance and entitlement', in CAMRA. Oh, the irony.

I read this the other day and thought this has to be at least partly made up carp, when did you last hear of anyone asking for "fined beer", if ever? Not even Dickie English would come out with that kind of phrase.

Sadly he mistakes fashion for a sea change, basically he appears to suffers from what we have all suffered from in our youth; namely being young enough to know everything and thinking how it is now will last forever.

What a complete pratt. Funnily enough,I rejoined CAMRA yesterday, mainly because I wanted to buy the GBG without enriching Amazon, which had incidentally sold out. 'spoons vouchers, anyone?

He's also "Never heard of a pub the isn't a JDW doing discounts for CAMRA members"

Maybe we could post a link to the 2049 pubs that do CAMRA discount that we currently have listed!

What an arrogant twonk!

Do we know which pub he runs?

There are a few unpleasant CAMRA members ,and equally there are a few unpleasant craft keg afficianados,of which the blogger is a fine example.

Beating CAMRA over the head with the Cloudwater example is nothing new,but he fails to mention the £13.40 pint of Cloudwater DIPA which got some airing recently.

There maybe some poor real ale being produced for national distribution ,but whenever I have had the chance to do a drink off between the cask and keg variety of the same beer (Magic Rock Hire Wire and Oakham Green Devil IPA ) as far as I was concerned the cask version won hands down.

He has every right to refuse to serve customers who upset his staff, but he appears to have taken their coin to fill his coffers.I occasionally visit Leeds and I too would also like to know in which pub/bar my very presence is going to cause offence .

Obviously the fact he owns a specialist beer bar has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on his loathing of both CAMRA and Wetherspoons.
From the earliest days of CAMRA I thought some of the members were a bit "weird" but it was probably reciprocal and I don't recall ever finding them rude or unpleasant.
It certainly would help if he disclosed the name of his bar so CAMRA members could boycott it. I bet the twenty quid he talks about at the end of his diatribe wouldn't go very far in there.

Back in the 1970s when Watney's introduced their "Fined Bitter". Later, after Ind Coope Burton Ale appeared it disappeared and they produced a much less malty Stag Bitter.
I've spoken to micropub owners who claim that unfined beers will settle in time but why bother with it unless it's aimed at the Vegan market?

I remember Watney's jumping on the real ale bandwagon, they also did one called Tamplins, guess what that was nicknamed  That is the only time I've ever heard the term being used in that context and I've never heard anyone order a beer using any such balls. I know there are a few numpteys in Leeds branch of Camra but this stuff doesn't ring true.

They will in time but for example Bad Seed beers are all unfined and clear because they brew properly and settle the beer in the brewery, likewise Brass Castle are unfined and usually clear probably because they know about such things as hot breaks. Both breweries are vegan friendly but don't make a fuss about it.

Being elderly I would almost certainly upset him just for being old and not being put off by exposed brick.

He has only just started blogging, with three posts to date, the Camra diatribe was his opening shot, so it could be an attempt to raise the profile or he's just another crafty who loathes Camra. His Twitter page gives south east England as a location and he only mentions Leeds in the second paragraph as he was living there 10 years ago, so it may not be Leeds Camra that has brassed him off.

Anybody know who or what a "Birkenstock fanboy" is?

I've had beers from both of them and didn't know that. Most recently Wooha IPA in an Aberdeen JDW had it on the clip and was hazy but tasted fine. Wishbone Pastiche in the crafty one of the three Colne micropubs was where the owner told me it was unfined but really only had a slight haze.

Having Googled Birkenstock and found it to be a maker of sandals I assume it's a pretty lame reference to the old "Beard and Sandals" jibe. It just proves that the old jokes aren't always the best and there's nothing good about the way he tells them.

Is it possible that drinking dead yeast and protein laden beers can cause brain damage?

This may explain it

EXPERTS cannot work out why anyone would buy a small, expensive bottle of beer in a pub

I'm going through Falmouth in November to visit the JDW. If I have time and it's open I'll pop in. I wouldn't mind betting that Al & Missus tried a sour. Brodies used to do these in E10 and I've had tasters of them but always declined going further. It got to the point where if a new one was on I would ask "is it worth a taste?" and the reply would always be "no don't bother". Of course, the keg fundamentalists would swoon at the prospect of trying one of these rank beers!
The keg crew seem to have hijacked the so-called craft movement as I thought that it actually included many cask ales. Like other fundamentalists (with no emphasis on the "funda" part of that word) they seem happy to distort the truth.
I'm sure I've seen Al praise some cask beers that I would describe as "craft", Proper Job being one pertinent one.

I've had some so-called 'citric' ales and they just taste sour. Why would someone brew a beer that tastes off? Is it so that if the ale turns, a customer has no cause for complaint? A case of the Emperor's New Clothes, me thinks.

There is a difference between a beer that's gone off ie turned to acetic acid (vinegar) and one that has been fermented by wild yeasts, eg Lambics, or by Brettanomyces yeasts. It is difficult to tell them apart without practice but personally I'm a big fan of Lambic and Gueze. I got a nice bottle of Duchesse du Burgoyne cheap cos no-one else would drink it in a bottle bar. :D
I haven't tried many UK made sours but those I have didn't quite have the quality of the Belgians.

Apparently 18/19th century Porters and Stout Porters were on the sour side due to the long maturation in Brettanomyces laden wooden vats.

A man of taste. There are a small band of us who keep the supply at the Nags ticking over enough so it's a permanent fridge fixture :D

Time to acquaint yourself with the mistress.

It sounds like something from a Little Britain sketch to me.
I've tried those wild yeast Belgian thingys and haven't got on with them. I was once highly recommended an obscure Belgian cherry one. It was so sharp and sour I ended up tipping most of it into a nearby aspidistra. I don't mind the odd Trappiste beer but even they are very herby and certainly not worth the price tag in pubs over here.

Was in a little off licence and I pointed out to the owner that the bottles of Duchesse de Burgoyne sat amongst the wines was actually beer not wine.He had not heard of it either.
