I don't recognise the winner at all. In the categories I've had one or more of all of them and it's only the Golden Ales where I've tried them all.

It's in lots of pubs round here. Must admit I haven't tried it, the name tends to encourage me to try something else.

Never heard of it.Twitter seems pretty disgruntled. I suppose it's good to see a Bitter as Champion. Pity nothing from Kent or Sussex in the lists.

I've had a few Church End beers around Warwickshire ,IMHO they are fine without being exceptional so surprised by the accolade . CAMRA often seem to choose modest ABV beers as Champion Beer and maybe this is a sop to the anti drinking lobby.

The choice of Golden Ale winners is more like it,very glad that Blue Monkey get some recognition for exceptional brewing, personal view and all that.

Never had it but its not raved about on Rate Beer. Currently reviewing at 3.1 / 5, so decidedly average.

Not sure what that says about Rate beer or CAMRA ?

Agree the name is crap. Wouldn't mind the chance to try it though.

Not had it either but have had a stout and a mild from them and if memory serves me well thought they were decent. Have access to my mate Gary,s list and he drank it in 2003 and gave it his top mark of A. There again he gave Doombar an A in 2007 so can he be trusted.Had a look at Ratebeer yesterday(like Gann) and someone rated it yesterday at GBBF at 2.5 so he was not impressed. The Champion beer contest is just a bit of Camra fun and not to be taken seriously.Hope to see it around soon to try.

Do people on Rate Beer ever rave about anything?

Yes they do but its the really strong beers that seem to stand out.

Only 3 beers I have not had and 1 brewery Greytrees.Surprised to find I have drank a Blackedge beer and it was Pikes pale.Lot of good beers on that list but Bishop Nicks -ridleys rite which is meant to be a copy of Ridleys bitter was a shocker when I tried it.Glad to see my fav mild Maggs Magnificent getting praise.

I've had a Greytrees beer called Diggers Gold, I thought I recognised the name. I've seen Blackedge around and have tried a couple. Bishop Nick are old school but their Ridley's Rite IS a copy of the old cooking beer, whether it was IPA or just Bitter. I probably last tried a Ridley's beer around 20 years ago, probably at the Travellers Friend in Woodford which I've been told has had a refurb and got rid of the snob screens.
Apart from a notepad file for the BOTW I don't keep records so don't have any other details. It seems I'm a complete Luddite!!
