View Full Version : Pubs Galore - the next crawl (Stockport, Autumn 2017)

This year's crawls have been in London (25 March) and the Midlands (23 June), so I think we need to agree on a northern venue for this year's autumn crawl. We usually do this in November rather than October - is this to avoid a clash with half-term holidays and consequent difficulty obtaining cheap train tickets? I assume so.

Previous autumn dates (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?16155-A-brief-history-of-PuG-crawls) (and I'm assuming we're going for a Friday as usual) have included 5 October (a bit of an outlier, this - it was the Black Country coach trip organised by Andy Ven and included a number of non-PuGers, as I recall), and 11, 12, 13, 14, 18 and 22 November.

Previous northern venues have been Liverpool, Leeds, York, Hull and Huddersfield.

Previous suggestions have included Newcastle, Durham, Chester (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?22271-Hull-pub-crawl-18th-March-2016/page2), Lancaster (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?24669-Next-PuG-pub-crawl(s)), Lincoln (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?22271-Hull-pub-crawl-18th-March-2016), Sheffield, Manchester and Stockport. (Please correct me if I have omitted any.)

Just to get the ball rolling, I propose Stockport as the destination this autumn, with a choice of 3, 10 or 17 November.

I would be happy with Stockport, and any Friday in November is good for me.I visited 4 pubs in Stockport quite recently and realised I had only scratched the surface, plus a revisit to those 4 would be more than acceptable.

I know nothing of Stockport but more than willing to give it a go, hopefully there is a possibility of a few train deals before November to slim down the basic advance ticket cost of £80.00 for me, November shouldnt be a problem.

Have you explored split ticketing Moby, often deals on Virgin.

I will do, but the usual problem is the cost of getting to London at the time of morning I would need to leave at, not much change out of 40 quid saving 70p on a ticket split! I think the way forward will be travel the day before and look at an overnight stop.

I'm booked up the first three weekends in November so won't be there. If anyone is staying overnight the Robinson's Visitor Centre opens at 09:00 and as food doesn't start until 10:30 then I would assume that they sell the beer at that time. Sadly they don't do breakfasts and I don't think they do Old Tom until December, I didn't think much of the JDW but if you're after breakfast and unlimited coffee then it's most likely fine.

I note I need to add the Fairway to my usuals up there.

This may be useful for anyone going from London early morning. Cheap advance tickets are hard to come by on Virgin trains weekday early mornings. I'm going to Stockport next month to visit the last three Cheshire JDWs and am getting the 08:46 LM service to Stoke (arrives 11:02). I've then got an advance ticket on the next Cross Country service to Manchester via Stockport which arrives about 15 minutes later and gets to Stockport around 11:50. The tickets with a railcard are £5.95 and £2.85 totalling £8.80. My fast advance Virgin ticket back from Stockport is £14.50.
Another tip for that 08:46 from Euston is that if things are running normally it is formed by the front 4 coaches of the 08:28 arrival from Brum on Platform 11, If you look at the arrival boards and see it is roughly on time then you can go up Platform 11 and wait for them to split the train, put it up on the boards and open the doors then grab your favourite seat. Note this only works with normal running and on weekdays. Under those circumstances it hasn't failed me yet.

You're the first person to query it! It was just a suggestion. I like Stockport.

By all means, propose Manchester instead. We could have a poll...

I would be quite happy to stay on the train for another stop to tackle Manchester,if there are alternatives then a poll might be a good idea.

Having just a picked up a discounted copy of the splendid new 'Real Heritage Pubs of the North West' guide at the GBBF, there are 12 listed pubs for Stockport and suburbs with historic interiors listed (of which I have been to a feeble two). Some 13 are listed for Manchester and suburbs (six visited) plus six in Salford (nil).

As no one has objected to Stockport and some have seemed quite keen (even ROB Camra said he's "no problem with doing a crawl around Stockport, but..."), shall we go for Stockport this time as people probably need to finalise their transport arrangements fairly soon.

On the date, Gann said the 10th was no good for him, and I think the 3rd is in half term week for some if not most areas, which might put some pressure on train tickets, so how about Friday 17 November?

Several of the TOCs now have advance tickets for that weekend so you need to finalise this date and venue. I don't think you've left yourself enough time for a poll between Stockport and Manchester but if it's worth anything I'd choose Stockport over central Manchester every time, although you need to be selective with the plethora of Robinson's outlets.

I suppose the better pubs would be something like this

The Cocked Hat (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53569/)
Bakers Vaults (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53489/)
Boars Head (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53532/)

Swan With Two Necks (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53616/)
Crown Inn (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53526/)
The Petersgate Tap (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/84579/)

and over in Heaton Norris (which would fit between The Crown and the Petersgate Tap)
The Railway (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53575/)
The Magnet Inn (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53559/)
The Midland (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55892/)

Nothing decent near the station so I've suggested starting at the Cocked Hat we also don't want Robbos after Robbos.

The Wetherspoons is The Calverts Court (JD Wetherspoon) (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53535/)

I'm visiting 21Oct and yes, will be including the Railway (beyond Arden) and the Hope and Vic. wouldn't do Bakers Vault or Boars Head, traditionalists may like the Pineapple, but a better Robbie's outlet is probably the Swan w Two necks, and the Arden, both of which you have.

Most disturbed by BF's recent experience in the Crown, I very much hope that was a rare blip.

Good grief! Only 18 ... and then once you're at the Hope it's only a few minutes to the Nursery (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/60144/).

I've recently acquired Camra's guide to the Real Heritage Pubs of the North West. I've already been to the Swan with Two Necks, Queens Head, Crown and Arden Arms, but not the Alexandra (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53486/) and Armoury (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53488/). The Nursery also features (been there) as does the Blossoms (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53531/), a Robinsons pub on the A6, near the Fairway.

That would make enough pubs to arouse Alan Winfield's interest.

Well if we've moved on to tunnels, I shall be arriving via Standedge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standedge_Tunnels), not as long as Totley but longer than Cowburn and Disley.

Anyone who knows Stockport well fancy reordering and trimming the pub list to a more manageable number BTW?

I've been to most of them, so could give it a go. (It was me that bumped it up to 22, so I suppose it should be me trimming it back again.)

I had a Travelodge discount code ('AUTUMNSTAYS') which was supposed to expire last week, but tried it and it worked. Had intended to look at the price for the one at Parrs Wood, but the one nr Heaton La. was cheaper - with code, £38 for 'family room' (as they don't offer twins).
Re the route, I never usually advocate this, but consideration might be given for a taxi from one of the lower locations to the higher, eg Railway... to Olde Vic (depending on running order)

Or there are buses. This free one (see attached document) might be useful but only runs every 15 minutes and only really covers the town centre, which is walkable.

I've been working on a route and will publish it shortly.

OK, here goes. As requested, I've done some trimming to the list, which as Old Boots suggested was becoming a little bit unmanageable. I've designated 10 mainstream pubs, nine wild cards and the Wetherspoons as a meeting place for those that like to do breakfast. (I've dropped Blossoms as there were already lots of Robinsons pubs on the list.)

The attached spreadsheet shows some of the criteria, but a few words of explanation might help. I've relegated the Crown to a wild card in light of the bad experience had by Nev and his crew in July (though as it will be passed on the longish walk between the Magnet and the Olde Vic, I guess it would be rude not to pop our heads round the door). The Nursery has also been wild carded as it adds more walking to what already looks like being a four mile route. Interestingly, the mainstream pubs average 8 points from PuG reviewers, the wild carders 7 points (and would have been lower as the Crown and the Nursery bump the average up considerably). Before anyone shouts about using the scores like this, I would like to point out that I did the mainstream/wild card process before looking at the scores on PuG.

The attached walking route does a little bit of criss-crossing in the town centre - this is to avoid doing too many Robinsons pubs close together in sequence. The bus is involved for getting from the Fairway to the Hope Inn, and is an option for getting from the town centre to the Fairway, so you might want to book Plus Bus when you get your train tickets. I haven't included walking directions for the Nursery, the Alexandra or the Armoury - the other wild cards are all passed along the main route, so it's easy for anyone who wants to tick them off to pop in for a swift half. (The Nursery (https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/The+Nursery+Inn/53.4157398,-2.1691576/@53.4156819,-2.1773456,16z/data=!4m9!4m8!1m5!1m1!1s0x0:0xaa81a9586391c91b!2m2 !1d-2.1768416!2d53.4150004!1m0!3e2) is a fairly easy walk from the Hope. The Alex and the Armoury are not far from the station, so easy enough for anyone - like me - who wants to tick them off to work out their own route.)

I don't know what time people are looking to get started on this crawl (no one so far has said what times their trains arrive!). With sunset being at 16:08 I thought an early start might be good, so I thought it might go something like this:

Leave 'Spoons at 11:20ish
11:25 Queens Head
11:50 Swan with Two Necks
12:15 Remedy
12:55 Railway (Portwood)
13:25 Arden Arms
14:10 Petersgate Tap
14:55 Fairway
15:40 Hope Inn
16:30 Magnet
17:25 Olde Vic

This is just a guide, I'm sure it won't be anything like this on the day, or once train tickets start to be bought. And no, I'm not going to stand around in each pub chivvying people to drink up and get moving.

If I've made any stupid mistakes or if anyone is desperately unhappy about anything to do with the route, please let me know in the gentlest and politest way you possibly can.

Cheers

I agree, it's been a must-visit for me too. But Nev's description makes it look like the Crown has lost custom to the Magnet and maybe some others, and now the stuffing has been knocked out of the place. I hope you find otherwise.

Just to advise that the route between the two most distant pubs, Hope & Fairway is downhill to Hope, uphill the other way, so a 191/192 from Hope to Fairway, then a walk down from there to Olde Vic would remove the rather punishing uphill walk from Heaton Norris (or Crown) to Olde Vic.
Not trying to tread on any toes, just saying...

I hear what you're saying Jim, but I think the hill is not as daunting as you imagine, at least it won't be once you've got a few beers inside you. Also, to my way of thinking, the final part of the route from the Hope, via the Magnet and (almost certainly) also the Crown makes a fitting crescendo, climaxing at the Olde Vic.

I am pleased to report that the apparent demise of the Crown was, hopefully, just a blip. Four different beers all thoroughly pulled through and served in fine fettle yesterday, ~12:15.
I do wish that pubs with so many lines would dedicate one to a more classic (copper) style bitter to cater for different tastes. Poor Jonesey struggled throughout the day with golden/pale overkill.
We did the day on foot apart from a taxi from Porters Railway to Olde Vic (£3.50) which worked well, though admittedly we missed the Fairway. If only we hadn't spent so long in the Hat Museum..!!

If fights hadn't already broken out with that concoction then I could add a discussion of the merits of the BITE top 20 or 100 pubs.
On a slightly more serious note I have to say I vastly prefer the Robinsons Visitor Centre to the Stockport Spoons. A Robinsons overkill situation will always be a danger in Stockport but I thought the beer quality there was as good or better than any of their tied houses. However, it's never going to be a place for the pub interior brigade.

You can still ask at departure or arrival station Gann - just say you forgot to get your plusbus, and they should sell you one. Even so, you'll probably only pay one bus (downhill on SH route ;o) ) or a day tkt is ~ £4.30 from bus driver.

5 hour de-brief in Sheffield after a standing-only train journey over (and through, Wil) the Pennines.
Missed train home due to useless Sheffield trams, but blagged next one with understanding on-train staff.
Beer of the weekend, for me, was Mallinsons Amarillo XL in the KIT, although I drank a frightening quantity of Deception in Shakespeares (my potw, with fab free old world juke box) in a very short time.
Great to see everyone, as always, and RJ said he enjoyed the craic with the crew too...

What an excellent meet up and an excellent turnout. I managed to bank five new pubs on the crawl, which was an added bonus. The Bakers Dozen and Remedy served up two of my favourite beers on the day, Titanic Grand Reserve Plum Porter and the Remedy Oat Pale. Yeah also me and my big mouth! recommending the pork pies in the Petergate Micro, as I went up to get one and they had all gone. Still thanks to Lee, I got a segment. Looking forward to the fotos.

As I was a Stockport Virgin it was 14 new pubs for me and as for POTD I really cannot decide. Apart from the Calverts Court that I wouldn't bother with, they were all ones I would readily return to, even the Boars Head where Nev and I managed to lower the average age and were probably 20 years too early to be considered inclusive..

As for BOTD also has to be the Titanic Grand Reserve Plum Porter. And thanks to AEM for the "situation" of the day in the Midland !
