I waited until very close to the end of the year to find this, but step forward The Workers (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/67332/) in Whitworth.

I've passed this place on many occasions, but last night I faltered and went in.

A grade 1 shithole that the Als (10000 & Bundy) would be proud to have visited.

Come on guys give it a go it's well up there in the top 10 worst I've EVER visited.

Actually come to think of it that sounds like another thread.

Moby, can you really rate a pub without drinking in it.Its rare for you to say you didn't have a drink in any pub but it might be the best pint of Courage -best you had in a long time.I only rate pubs that I have had a drink in as good beer can change a rating upwards while bad beer can def knock a few points off.I often stand outside that pub waiting for a 65 bus and have never been tempted to try it.cheers

I don't normally but in this case I went in stood at the bar to be served and fortunately service was slack and I had time to reconsider, you might be right about the Courage Best, but I suspect the rating would have dropped to 1/10,I saw enough of the pub to rate it,beer tasting aside,I take your point and it could possibly be a travesty of justice,I somehow doubt it. My decision stands.

Two quite recent visits are vying for this dubious award, here (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/14898/) in Stevenage and this charming spot (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/56377/)in Yeovil.

Both had real ale close to undrinkable.I'll give it to the Lloyds No. 1,just.

The White Hart (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/24362/) No contest.

I've just seen it reported that the once-famed Whitefriars Olde Alehouse (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/52342/) in Coventry has "gone bust" - which, based on my early 2106 re-visit (which, having re-read my review, should really have scored a generous 2), is frankly no surprise. Still sad, though.

Last year I had a lucky escape with the Stevenage one as I just took a picture and decided not to bother trying it.

Things are looking up on the Lloyds No 1 front as quite a few have closed or have been sold on during the last year or so. My worst pub is also a Lloyds the Lord Wilson (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/56802/) in Huddersfield. The whole place was a complete shambles with uncleared tables, poor beer choice, rank beer and for some reason two projector screens showing the Trooping Of the Colour which nobody was watching. The irony of this disaster was that the next pub visited the Rat and Ratchet (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/40704/) was one of my favourites of the year. I stopped for three there!

Agreed very sad, great interior but clearly problems on the operational front.Hope a new owner/tenant can breathe life back into this pub.

I know these things happen but I must have hit it on a good day and time, I thought it was excellent, but I thought the same about the Moo Bar in Carlisle!

Like the Al's I will go in any pub but won't generally call any pub shit, especially as I'm a lager drinker but one for general amusement given the signage is Fulford House (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/370/)

Which as I don't seem to be able to upload photo stated

The management, bar staff & customers are fed up with all the fighting! ZERO TOLERANCE FROM NOW AND LIFETIME BAN.

To second bcfczuluarmy, I'll walk into any pub, which means if trying to tick off a town I'm always bound to come across plenty of chaff, but this year's winner has to be Oxfordshire's Crawley Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/76831/).

Even re-reading my review, I feel I didn't manage to grasp the paucity of any of its demerits. Certainly up there with Cowley (Oxford's) former Nelson (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/31761/), which is not forgotten and gone...

Just goes to show the value of a site like this featuring extensive pictures and reviews - unlike some, this place appears to look like being worth a visit, but without a review you would never know the full horrors that lie within... (and others work quite the opposite way, e.g. The Laurieston Bar (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/74748/)).

WHAT?UB seem quite enthusiastic in their account, but then again, you can read "this quirky pub dating from 1789, is full of character and characters" more than one way.

Only one contender for me this year - the truly dreadful Hallmark Hotel Croydon (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/79127/)

Winston Churchill, Charles Lindbergh, Charlie Chaplin, Rita Hayworth - your hotel took one hell of a reviewing!

Your review made it all worthwhile, loved it
"Plenty then for Hallmark, the current owners of this fascinating building, to make use of in their public bar. But alas, somehow all this fascinating history has been completely glossed over, in favour of a soulless hotel bar that is so drab and unappealing I was tempted to take my pint out to the car park so I could watch the traffic thunder down the Purley Way instead"

I agree with Farway,an entertaining review, tried to add to your reputation on the strength of it, but the computer apparently says no.

I would like to nominate Queens Head (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/12680/), Longford Gloucestershire. My partner and his Brother, visited the pub a few months ago, the staff were not exactly welcoming to them. A gastro pub that is more interested in the restaurant side of the business, rather than customers that have come just for a drink, is never a "recipe" for success.

The White Bear (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/27720/)

Not the worst pub, but by far the worst experience.

Just reading some of the reviews in this thread goes someway to solving why so many pubs close, far easier to blame supermarkets than crap service, beer, bar, food, attitude or all of them [delete as required]

I haven't awarded any 1s this year (nor any 10s, come to that), but here are a handful of 2s:

Queens Head (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/31317/), Worksop
Northern Taps (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/62784/), Huddersfield
The Oddfellows Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/63359/), Caldbeck, Cumbria
The Shepherds Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/54845/), Langwathby, Cumbria
The Green Man (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/21539/), Scamblesby, Lincolnshire

I wrote in my review that the Oddfellows was lucky to get a 2, but this maybe reflects my disappointment after a hard bike ride; and probably the Green Man too should really have been a 1, but I think I felt a bit of sympathy for the pub itself, for being in the hands of such an ogre. The "winner" is the Green Man.

Its not so much the pubs or who run them , its the owners (pub co's) that are the fly in the ointment.

I haven't been far from my comfort zone this year generally sticking to GBG pubs when I'm away and tried and tested at home, however here's a few that could do better,

two next door to each other in Bradford
The Ginger Goose (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55099/)
The Old Bank (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/40097/) much better than next door but still room to improve
The Old White Swan (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55473/) not outright bad but definitely the worst service of the year and that's in Yorkshire.

The Duncan (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42686/) although there is quite some competition in Leeds for this coveted title this is the worst I've been in this year, it's only saving grace is probably the fact that it has no cask beer so none of the usual Sam's cold vinegar.
