Had enough of watery Scottish Pale Ales? I thought so. But I’m going to publish another one anyway.

If only because this makes this week that little bit easier. I already have the recipe lying around and all I need to do is wrap a little bollocks around it and I’m done. No real work or effort required. Which is just how I like things.

I though a quick comparison with some similar-strength English Pale Ales might be instructive. So I had a quick look in my mega table of analyses. And could find bugger all. I’ve only got 7 English Pale Ales that have a gravity even vaguely similar. And two of them are the same beer. It was hard to find anything English under 1040º. Though I did find some other Scottish Pales Ales around 1030º. Obviously a Scottish thing.

All but one of the English beers is in bottled format. They look to me as if they were probably sold as Light Ale or Light Dinner Ale. To makes things even more confusing, the Whitbread beer is their IPA.

XXP 6 isn’t even Lorimer & Clarke’s weakest Pale Ale. There’s also XXP 5, weighing in at a mighty 1027º.

As for the recipe, note the high proportion of dry hops. All their Pale Ales got the same dose of dry hops, no matter what the strength of the beer. In such a light beer, I guess they were going to be pretty noticeable.
Everything else is just like the XXP 7 and 8. Just in slightly smaller amounts.
