[Real Ale Ray]

Have a few days in London coming up and looking for suggestions of somewhere to go with a good range of pubs, not too far out. Am heading to Canterbury one day, but looking at maybe Windsor? Twickenham looks ok too.

Any suggestions would be very welcome!

I was drinking in twickenham on Sunday post NFL game so plastic glasses didn't endear the pubs to me. I like Windsor and Richmond can be accessed via the tube.

Canterbury probably all Sheps, and Windsor all Fullers. Couldn't get excited about Twickenham either, tho the Sussex, Fox, White Swan may be worth a look. Richmond is also dull, beer-wise.
Chelmsford is 30mins from Liverpool St, good for pubs, I'll be interested to see your London targets Ray...

i was interested to see Komakino mention 14 handpumps at the Express tavern (Kew Bridge), could be doubled with the Falcon at Clapham Junction if you aint been there. The Wenlock has had a very good selection the twice I've been in october, double this with the Old Fountain. Otherwise Ye Olde Mitre (Hatton Garden) and Craft Beer Co (Leather Lane) go together. i find Market Porter a bit duller than it used to be, Harp is still generally on form but has suddenly given up on the sub-£4 pint and jumped to £4.30! If over that way the Blackfriar is an architecural win (and to think they wanted to trash it in the 60s!). The Old Coffee House(?) is good for Brodies in town, or go to the source at King William IV if out east, but I see you've done that... and maybe the others above!

I was in Canterbury recently and managed to avoid any Sheps pubs although they are not on my AVOID list. In the old days Canterbury had quite a few Whitbread houses.
In Windsor last winter I was more than happy to stick to the two Spoons and the Windsor & Eton pub.

Can be done! Try New Inn,Phoenix, Thomas Tallis Ale house,Rose and Crown,City Arms, Foundry,Dolphin. Also, don't avoid Sheps-some of the pubs are crackers, and who knows, the beer has its moments.

Was in The Old Coffee House (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/22327/) last Sunday and watched Chelsea stuff Man U :D, that aside its a very good pub with an impressive range of Brodies Beers and all tried were good, also nearby I would recommend The Lyric (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/22307/), In no way a heritage pub but great beer range, and just around the corner, The Queens Head (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/22338/) was pretty good as well.
Twickenkam wise I recently enjoyed The Fox (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/27833/) , The Eel Pie (ww.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/27832/) (to a point) and The White Swan (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/27852/).

Windsor is a good day out - though for optimum value, December is best as you get a proper Christmassy feel that's fairy unique in my experience.

If you are going to Kew you could also consider popping along to Brentford a short bus ride away.The Magpie & Crown (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/27430/) is a good free house while The Brewery Tap (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/27422/),although just a Fullers house,is charming and exciting at high tide with a full moon !
