View Full Version : Autumn/Winter PuG Crawl 2016 ?

With advanced rail fare tickets now going on sale for November,it seems appropriate to start a thread to see where and on which date the next crawl should occur.

From previous discussions earlier in the year I think we are firm that it will be somewhere in "The North",so to kick things off can I nominate Manchester and Huddersfield as two possible contenders, although I do accept that Manchester may well take a weekend to do it justice.:)

How about Ludlow? Mid/central location, historic and a centrally located railway station.

Looking back through the recent previous crawls (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?16155-A-brief-history-of-PuG-crawls) ,should the next one not be in the midlands ?

There was a bit of debate around this issue at the beginning of the year, and in an attempt to rebalance the historic bias against northern venues, the solution I thought was agreed for 2016 was The North (Hull),Oxford,The North. I'm not very good at linking to previous topics but that was my recollection.

Given that the last poll for the Nurf gave us a straight fight between Huddersfield and Hull, should we just say Huddersfield and be done?

Else it'll be a month before we've gone through the usual processes from scratch...

If Huddersfield were to be decided upon, with a meeting date prior to 04Nov, it would give the southern based contingent a chance to book the London-Leeds leg (if still available on Virgin east coast offer, booking window ends 18Aug) at £7.25ew, then Leeds-Hudds for £7rtn...

If not, do any southern folk fancy that as a randomer? I'm off to France tmw to a location without wifi, so this may fall flat for me!

A little over rated IMHO, once away from the handful of, admittedly very good or excellent pubs, it's a bit mediocre. Having said that for those who haven't been it's a must do for Yorkshire. If it's a Friday, and remember Saturday can have the Rail Ale tour numptys, I should be free: 21st October, 28th October, 4th November, and 11th November.

I like the idea of Ludlow too for next year.

Yeah. There used to be about three Michelin-starred restaurants but they closed years ago when the owners realised that with their new-found reputations, they could make more money in richer cities. There's still the food festival in September though.

I assumed we were doing North this November, to "even things up".

See this thread (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?22271-Hull-pub-crawl-18th-March-2016/page3), in particular Nev's point at #15 and some stats from me at #20. Although I haven't been there I do know that Joules have taken on the Rose and Crown (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/32078/) in Ludlow. Their beers are "Old School" (do I hear a sigh of relief?). I'm happy to drink in their pubs as in all cases I've tried so far they have turned then into good old fashioned boozers. My only other advice about Ludlow would be to consider going somewhere else!

As time goes on, tickets are likely to become more expensive, especially for those unlucky enough not to live in Yorkshire, which I would suggest makes an October date not very realistic.

Objections have been raised to November 4th and 11th.

18th November then folks?

how about as a rough itinerary:

Kings Head (Station Tavern) (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/62786/) opens 11:30
The Sportsman (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/40740/)
Wood Street Craft Beer House (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/78471/) opens 12:00
The Vulcan (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/40775/)
The Grove (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/40654/)
Rat & Ratchet (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/40704/)
The Star Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/56908/)
The Head of Steam (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/40658/)

Early doors Spoons: The Cherry Tree (JD Wetherspoon) (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/56333/)

wild cards:
The Plumbers Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/56806/) (newly opened but on way t'Grove or back)
Magic Rock Tap (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/83081/) opens at 3pm very off piste but could be linked with
Slubbers Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/40736/) (the famous Taylors house)
The Warehouse (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/56803/) also not a classic but on the way t'Grove or back.

Feel free to comment or shoot down in flames or fine tune.

Magic Rock Tap appears to be about 10 minutes walk from the Sportsman, and I for one would not find that off-putting, especially as the Slubbers Arms is only a short stroll further on. Then back into town for the Vulcan (13 minutes) or there are bus alternatives for those who prefer not to walk (and it may, of course, be snowing).

Looks promising, OB.

I was thinking the distance from the Slubbers to the Star may be a tadge long for a comfortable day, hence off piste. I suppose the order could be swapped round to accommodate MR and the Slubbers ending up at the HOS as is traditional for Huddersfield crawls.

The problem is that the Magic Rock and the Slubbers are to the north of the town centre, while the Star and the Rat are to the south. What about a couple of extras in the centre for those who don't want to do the excursion to the north (such as the Northern Taps (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/62784/) )?

1. Kings Head
2. Wood Street

Then the additional walk is accommodated between the Sportsman and the Vulcan, with those that have done that extra bit then skipping straight to the Plumbers and the Grove.

That's a good list of 13 pubs worth visiting with only the Magic Rock Tap having a problem opening time .So why not just leave the Magic Rock as a wild card, and visit the other 12 in the order shown .12 pubs is about an average hit list for these all day PuG crawls. Anyone not wanting to do the longer walks (to Slubbers and Star ) can spend a little longer in the Sportsman /Vulcan or Grove/Rat & Ratchet

The Star also has late opening, 5pm on Fridays. Another central pub is the Parish (Pump) (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/72839/) although not a classic isn't bad. I would also visit the Sportsman after the Kings Head and then go to Wood St, then on to the central/southside pubs as Sheffield Hatter suggests.

Your best bet would be to see if you can get another day off work and travel up at your leisure on the Thursday. Places like Premier Inn and Travelodge cost around £30-£50 a night if you go for the advance option where you lose your money if you don't turn up. I would have thought it might be cheaper with advance tickets on Cross Country services from Reading.
Huddersfield is probably the best place for beer I've been to this year (the dismal Lloyds No 1 excluded).

I was looking at a stop over and Virgin currently offer £14.50 one way to Huddersfield from Kings X, as you say the early(40 miles or so) bit and the shortest bit is the crap bit.
As it stands, all in all I'm looking at 75 quid on trains plus 50 - 60 quid to kip, plus beer. We shall see.

Just one small fly in the ointment: I went to Huddersfield for a bit of reconnaissance last Friday and found the Slubbers Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/40736/) not open at 12:15 and 12:45. WhatPub says they are open at 12, and I haven't been able to find any other info.

I checked out a couple of possible wild cards. I would say the Northern Taps (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/62784/) can be safely swerved - only two cask ales on, both with improvised luggage tags rather than pump clips. I had "Northern Cask", which on enquiry turned out to be Tetleys Bitter, but it was in very poor shape. The other was called "Sandstone Edge". No idea, and didn't like to ask the barman after I'd pointed out to him that Tetleys is not brewed in Leeds any more.

Warehouse (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/56803/) looks like a student bar. I didn't go in, but it was covered in banners announcing "Freshers' Week".

Parish (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/72839/) was ok, very quiet at the time of my 11am visit but the beer was in good condition.

Corner, Sportsman and Plumbers were all very good. I didn't go to the Magic Rock, Star, Grove, Rat & Ratchet or Head of Steam.

The Vulcan (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/40775/) was unpromising: I had to wait for the person behind the bar to finish stocking the fridge with bottles of Stella Artois, which is never a good sign. And two of the pump clips were hand-written. But I had an excellent half of Worthington White Shield, the first time I've come across this legendary beer on hand pump, and it was only £1.25, so the pub went up in my estimation by a few notches.

The Wood Street (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/78471/)was a bit eccentric, but an interesting choice of good beers.

I ended up at the Kings Head (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/62786/), which is a lot smarter than when I last visited, with an excellent beer range. If we start here, we might have to set back the times of arrival in later pubs, as it will take a while to get everyone to leave.

The Warehouse was on my long list and maybe shouldn't be discounted just yet. 'oldboots' noted it had four pulls and that the beer quality was better than expected. Freshers week will have long gone when we descend in November.

Also on my long list was The Crown (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/40623/). Both the Als had a grumble about the pricing policy, but there are up to six real ales available. It's also very handy for the station.

Looking good!

Just one small fly in the ointment: I went to Huddersfield for a bit of reconnaissance last Friday and found the Slubbers Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/40736/) not open at 12:15 and 12:45. WhatPub says they are open at 12, and I haven't been able to find any other info.

easy to miss out as it's on the edge of the area being further out than Magic Rock, perhaps it opens at 12 on Friday's but do we risk it?

Not one of my Huddersfield favourites and Camra has dropped it from the GBG so I would move it down to a reserve or wild card.

The Warehouse is definitely better than OK but not a must visit, the Crown I would rate lower than the Vulcan especially on choice and quality - many pumps do not a quality alehouse make - but I have a friend who swears both are excellent (I think he's swayed by the cheap food rather than the beer TBH)

We may have that trouble in a number of places, especially The Grove and Rat & Ratchet and probably the Sportsman too, so I wouldn't over-worry about wild cards and reserves unless you're set on covering as many pubs as possible.

I think it's fair to say the PuG community is split between those that are predominantly beer led versus those that are pub led. Personally, I would be happy sticking with the big hitters and working my way across the pumps in a leisurely fashion. I wouldn't normally consider places such as the Crown and the Warehouse. However, as Huddersfield is not blessed with a huge number of quality venues, I mention them as possibles for the number crunchers.

It was Friday that I was there when it didn't open on time. I'd really like to do the Slubbers Arms. The beer may not be startlingly original, but it seems like an interesting pub from what I've read. In fact, I'd be much more interested in this one than in the Magic Rock Tap. I may give them a ring nearer the date and ask what time they're likely to open on November 18th.

Sportsman 13:20-13:45
Magic Rock 13:55-14:15
Slubbers 14:20-14:40
Wood St 14:55-15:15
Vulcan 15:18-15:35 (could miss out and go straight to Corner...)
Corner 15:40-16:10
Rat & Ratchet 16:20-17:00
(Star 17:10-17:45)
Grove 17:10-1745 or 18:00-18:30 if the Star is included
Plumbers 17:50-18:10 (18:40-19:00)
Head of Steam 18:15 - end (19:05 - end)

All VERY approximate, 20 minutes per pub at the start might easily slip to half an hour. I would still estimate 15:30 to 16:00 as arrival time at The Corner.

I think the list of hardy drinkers is

I don't know either Elaine or Tara, so I can't estimate how pleased they will be to have a chat with us after we've visited seven other pubs. Should we perhaps bump the Corner up the list? I just don't get why they can't accommodate a decent (more regular) bitter in a list that long. We still have folk who much prefer it and are often marginalised when out with the hopheads...
My call would be for summat like Tiger to cater for a diverse clientele.

There's no (real) cider at the Vulcan, the Star or the Magic Rock Tap. Don't know about the Corner - I usually note cider if I see it, so as it's not mentioned in my review, probably not. There's real cider at the Grove, but it's almost certainly pale and hoppy.

We really enjoyed the day on Friday, good beer and good company, despite the awful weather!

Also managed to visit Addingham and Ilkley yesterday too - more rain  less snow.

Until the next time
