So just back at hotel after enjoyable Hull pub crawl, time to start arranging the summer 2016 crawl in Oxford. Does anyone have any thoughts on dates? Early July maybe?

Evening Dave. Hope you chaps had a good time up in Hull. As an Oxfordshire native, I'd be rude of me not to make an appearance and put some faces to usernames. July's looking good for me, so will work around the consensus if you can accommodate a 'newbie'. Cheers, KK.

Time to bump this as we need a date fixed for those who want to get mega-advance tickets. Reading above, the 2nd isn't preferred - how about 9/16/23?

Also, have been thinking about a route/list

Meet point:
The Four Candles (JD Wetherspoon) (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/31833/) (53 George Street, OX1 2BE)

then to
Beerd Oxford (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/31732/) (7 George Street, OX1 2AT)
The Eagle & Child (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55404/) (49 St Giles, OX1 3LU)

Now potentially we can add some shoe leather and do
The Gardeners Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/31724/) (39 Plantation Road, OX2 6JE)
The Rose & Crown (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/31793/) (14 North Parade Avenue, OX2 6LX)

then back to (or just go straight from the E&C) to
Lamb & Flag (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/31751/) (12 St. Giles, OX1 3JS)
White Horse (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55405/) (52 Broad Street, OX1 3BB) - a small place, so may be a squeeze!
The Kings Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/31748/) (40 Holywell Street, OX1 3SB)
Turf Tavern (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/31818/) (5 Bath Place, OX1 3SU)
The Bear (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/31667/) (6 Alfred Street, OX1 4EH)
St Aldates Tavern (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/31676/) (108 St Aldates, OX1 1BU)
JOKER The Chequers (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/31687/) (131 High Street, OX1 4DH)
JOKER The Crown (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/31699/) (59A Cornmarket Street, OX1 3HB)
The Royal Blenheim (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/31671/) (13 St Ebbes Street, OX1 1PT)
JOKER: The Swan & Castle (JD Wetherspoon) (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/68406/) (Castle Street, OX1 1AY)

End point/station pub
The Kite (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/31750/) (69 Mill Street, OX2 0AL)

Frustratingly the only Saturday around that time I can do is the 2nd. Are we definitely going for a Saturday?

I think we agreed a Saturday in principle to help those who struggle with Fridays. I personally can do either.

I'd normally go for a Friday (and would prefer the 22nd to the 15th), but I've just had a quick look at train fares. Saturday 2nd is quite substantially cheaper - there may be more favourable options such as splitting my journey in Birmingham that I haven't explored yet, but at the moment I'm leaning towards Saturday 2nd (with apologies to Nev).

Some people were quite vociferous about doing this on a Saturday - have we heard from them yet on this thread?

I don't know if you're referring to me but I won't be there whatever the outcome. I've got a load,of trips already planned for July and to be honest I don't regard Oxford as a destination place . Even in the Morrells and Morland days I didn't really rate it. I've got cheap rail tickets for June to visit the Spoons but I'm not really bothered about Nicholson's, Young's, Brakspear or Fuller's pubs, in fact I'd rather not go to them at all. As it's Oxford I'm expecting to be ripped off right left and centre and will take some CAMRA vouchers for the Spoons.

I have always prefered Saturdays, one because its easier for me workwise(I understand its the opposite for you Will) ,and secondly its normally a lot cheaper travelwise although in this case its a relatively cheap trip for me with no need of advanced tickets.

Sorry Ray!

Actually, there's nothing to stop you organising a poll and getting the majority of people to support the "not the 2nd" option. That will make it easier for me to decide not to come. (I'm beginning to have some sympathy for Aqualung's thoughts about whether Oxford is really a destination, pub-wise.)

Selecting a date is always tricky and there doesn't seem a date which suits all.

Reading back through the thread ,the options seem to me to be

Saturday 2nd July

Friday 15th July

Friday 22nd July

For those people who would like to do Oxford, should we poll on just these dates ,or should a wider list of both Friday and Saturday dates in July be on a poll ?

There should be a wider list and if possible accommodate everyone, a tall order I know, I can be flexible and will do a Friday if necessary, but I think Saturday options should always be considered and they may possibly encourage new attendees, which must be a good thing.

Despite voting for 2/7/16 I can no longer do this Saturday or the preceding Friday, still flexible with all other dates but still preferring a Saturday , although at the end of the day we need to accommodate as many as possible. The sooner the date is nailed it can be booked off for those that need to.

Worth another bump. With the poll closed it appears the most popular date is Friday July 22nd.

I also thought this route from Quinno was very good ,nothing wrong using a bit of shoe leather.

Only seven people voted. Does this mean that others are indifferent as to which day is chosen because they will be coming anyway, or are they just so unlikely to come they couldn't be bothered to vote? I guess we'll never know (until only six of us turn up on the 22nd July).

OK, I can easily skip the 'Spoons, especially as there's a fair chance I'll be on the later train. But if there's one thing I can't stand, it's a pub that prices its beers in 2/3rds of a pint (https://whatpub.com/pubs/OXF/C-20/beerd-oxford). Is it ok if I bring along my "Johnson machine gun and a carload of exploding balls (https://sonichits.com/video/Sunnyland_Slim/Johnson_Machine_Gun)". Or should I just calm down a little? (Thinks: Half is three-quarters of two-thirds, so just take a quarter off the display price and that's how much a half costs. Simple.)

Thoughts?

Yes, looks interesting - thanks for putting it together - though some of the reviews are getting a little old. Come on, Quinno, get those skates on!

Assuming I don't get arrested after Beerd, and avoiding the two 'Spoons, that leaves me with 14 pubs. Not exactly a Winfield, but certainly a bit of a challenge to my ancient liver. (Those who like their 'Spoons but prefer to conserve shoe leather will be looking at 13, unless they duck all the jokers, which leaves a modest 10.)

I agree with Nev that the diversion into Jericho looks like a good idea. As a near-stranger to Oxford, what might also interest me would be any other out-of-the-way-locals as an alternative to what may turn out to be busy-tourist-honey-pots on a sunny July afternoon (for example this (https://whatpub.com/pubs/OXF/C-48/turf-tavern-oxford) and this (https://whatpub.com/pubs/OXF/C-15/eagle-child-oxford)).

Anyone?

For reasons of blood pressure I'll also be skipping the Beerd (see #29 in this thread (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?23059-Oxford-summer-2016/page3)) and will be aiming to catch up with you all either in The Eagle & Child or The Gardeners Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/31724/) sometime after 13:00. I think some of you should have my mobile number, so please let me know where you are.

Ok will keep you posted Will

Sad to say that I can't make this one. I managed to break my neck whilst on holiday in April (don't ask!) and whilst I'm well on the road to a full recovery, I'm not quite up to a full day in the field yet. Hope you all have a great time and I'll look forward to reading all the reports and reviews afterwards.

Was looking forward to catching up with you Leigh, haven't seen you for a while! See you next time

Made a last minute decision to jump on the train to Oxford, just me today though as Tammy is busy working. See you all soon!

We enjoyed yesterday, some interesting pubs in Oxford. Was great to meet Tris and all the regulars again.

Hope you got your phone back Quinno, didn't see it, as we left the Kite around 8.30pm.

Did Big Steve make it to the kebab van, after the Kite? We did and it was excellent.

Until the next crawl!

No, Big S decided against the kebab and we ended up with sandwiches from M&S, we should have done the van.:moremad:

Are you sure you had your phone in the Kite? I don't recall anyone entering our room; I left a couple of minutes after you.

The market for older phones isn't lucrative and modern phones can be tracked/blocked.

Couldn't track it as the battery is dead. Sure I had in the Kite as the wife has a text from me saying I was close to heading off. Anyway it's blocked and locked now (the guy on customer services said a text was sent at 9.15, well-after I knew I had mislaid it - mysterious...!) I wonder if it fell out of my pocket when I got my wallet out at the station.

Anyway I've been banging on about getting a new phone for ages (mine is 5 years old) so its forced me to do it. Prices are amazingly low compared to a few years back so silver linings and all that!

Amazingly I took off most off the photos last week although I neglected to do the same with the videos, which is unfortunate.

We weren't very organised about doing a group photo. To be honest, most of the pubs were so busy that we didn't get a chance to get together much after the first few, and the idea of asking one of the pub workers to take our photos - well, let's say the opportunity never arose.

I took the group photo outside the Royal Blenheim - a sadly depleted group as Mick, Steve and Nev had gone off piste at this point, and unfortunately I didn't see them again as I had to quickly do the Kite before catching my train back to Sheffield.

Had to do two takes, as a young lass walked in front of the camera on take 1. Tris - better not let the missus see take 2 either.

I didn't know Billie Piper lived in Oxford!

Although I'm well aware her ex has been there quite a bit :p

Ooops!

Makes me look a bit of a leche....

On the Piper front, unless she has moved recently, she lives pretty much next door to The Load of Hay Tavern (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23740/).

AEM, Blackthorn ?

I had initially planned to join you on this one, I like Oxford, haven't been for a while, and it's fairly handy for me. As I started a new job on Monday though, I thought it might not be best to start taking time off before I've hardly started, especially as I had already booked another weekend away next weekend which I will have to take time off for.

Plus the fact that it's a contract role, so if I'm not there, I don't get paid. As much as I enjoy all your company, I'm not sure it's enough to lose a days wages! Hope you all had a good time, and I'll try and make one of the next ones (especially if we ever decide to go for a Saturday).

I spent ages working out the badge on the football shirt. Too fuzzy when zoomed.
Looked at Stoke, Sunderland, Southampton and Sheffield United before I settled on Athletic Bilbao about a thousand badges later.
Must get a life or get down to the pub. Option two sounds the best bet!
