Thought the blackboard outside the Exmouth Arms nw1 which from a distance said Big Juicy Bastard (its a burger) was a fairly uncouth sort of street sign. But nearly choked on my kebab when I got home and was reading a Liverpool Camra mag to find a pub called the Doric in Seaforth has changed its name to the Cock and Seaman. Not funny? or yes funny?

I kind of find it funny, but then I don't have to walk past it everyday, also I possess a sick sense of humour.

Depends to some extent on what the pub sign depicts....

This is the company responsible, and a cursory glance at their website shows that it seems to be a growing (sorry) trend for them to rename their pubs this way. But don't be too hard-on (sorry) them, they actually try to do a good job of refurbishing pubs, and in many cases pull it off (You're fired. Ed.).

In all seriousness, I do find it a bit childish, and it is a shame because their pubs I've been to in Swinton, Stockport and Macclesfield are a vast improvement on what went before. Not sure if it's because I'm prudish or that I'm generally against name-changes in the vast majority of cases.

These photos (from Ghana Nation, obviously), suggest it doesn't have a pub sign, thankfully.

Popped into Howling Hops Tank Room (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/83062/) prior to watching some rugby at the Olympic Stadium a couple of weeks ago. They had something on their menu titled 'A Fuck Off Tray of Meat'.

I don't think prudery enters into it. It's just puerile, the sniggering behind the hands type of humour beloved by twelve year olds, everywhere. No doubt the guys who came up with it think it's frightfully witty and don't see a problem with half the entries to Pump Clip Parade, either. I'm sure we can look forward to such gems as The Seaman & Pearl Necklace in the near future. Ooh er, missus.

Oh dear, and the pub in question is only visible on their website under a drop-down option 'coming soon..'

Nope, definitely not a fan of invented imbecilic pub names and would probably have to avoid it using it as a local, if in my area.

Puerile sums it up nicely, all the 12 year olds sniggering on the way to school

It is puerile, great word, and puerile is fine if it's amusing, which this may be for about two seconds.
Viz is both puerile and amusing and much appreciated for being so. But being puerile and amusing is the purpose of Viz and it's transient. The purpose of a pub sign is to advertise the pub and it's permanent.
Bah Humbug!

I agree totally. There's nothing wrong with puerile smutty humour if it's funny. To me the Adnam's pub the Cock in Clare is funny because it is completely unintentional. This one doesn't even raise a smile.

Raised a smile with me but then I'll laugh at anything remotely funny, in spite of my gruff Yorkshire exterior I am at heart a liberal, liberatarian, who values enlightenment values above all else, hmm slightly heavy for a beer related web-site, I'll get me glass...........

I can not let this thread pass with reference to The Fawcett Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/13983/), named after after the road it is on and not some smutty publicity

pub has been there for years

Not sure that the Faucet Inn (http://www.faucetinn.com/) pub chain can claim the same, though...

It always amuses me when tourists - usually American - squeal with laughter when they see a pub with a name like The Famous Cock (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23653/) or The Black Cock Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/67032/). What I don't like is unusual ales with names like Old Wrinkled Knob.

In a similar vein, there's The Polished Knob (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/56015/)

With an 8/10 rating, obviously a shining light, is it a back street job, (sorry).

I'll have to reflect on that....
