As discussed here (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?20520-Summer-Pubs-Galore-crawl/page3), it seems we are going to Derby for the Autumn crawl. Anyone have any proposals for the date? In the past, we've mostly gone for the second Friday (see http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?16155-A-brief-history-of-PuG-crawls for details). This year that would be Friday the 13th, so anyone who objects to this on superstitious grounds needs to speak up. Train tickets for this week will be going on sale in about two weeks, so a decision needs to be made soon.

Dates fine with me, will have to see what the finances/train deals are like as to whether I attend this one or not a little nearer the time.

Sorry about that. I can't see the post after I have entered it, so presumed it had not gone. When I try to edit or remove them, there is no save or ok button so they are all on and I cannot change them now.

It would be interesting to hear people's thoughts on a possible route, as my experience of Derby is that there's quite a lot of distance between some of the worthwhile pubs, so we may want to use the buses. I'm thinking of places like The Peacock Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7179/), the Furnace Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7088/), the Five Lamps (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7226/), the Horse & Groom (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7114/), The Flower Pot (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7080/), Mr Grundy's Tavern (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7155/), the Golden Eagle (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7094/), the Greyhound Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7104/), The Bell & Castle Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7007/) and the Falstaff Tavern (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7073/), all of which are outside the ring road and quite a long way from each other, not to mention from the station.

Near the station are The Brunswick Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7022/) and The Alexandra Hotel (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/6999/), one of which would be a good place to start and the other to finish, though I'm sure someone will propose The Babington Arms (JD Wetherspoon) (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7004/) for an earlier meet up. In the centre there's Ye Olde Dolphin Inne (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7285/), of course, and The Flower Pot (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7080/). Any more worth doing within the ring road?

I think most of the Northern contingent will have done Derby a few times so we'll have no problem with pubs outside the ring road, there are of course a few don't miss pubs in the centre for those new to the city The Brunswick Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7022/) and The Alexandra Hotel (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/6999/) amongst them. These are of course the start/finish pubs due to their location.

The buses look to be fairly good bus map here (http://www.derbyconnected.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Derby-City-MG-new-version.pdf) and this (http://www.derbyconnected.com/getting-around-derby/buses/bus-projects/spectrum-ticket/) is the obvious ticket to get.

My favourites would be the two above plus,Furnace Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7088/), The Flower Pot (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7080/), Exeter Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7072/), Silk Mill Ale & Cider House (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7173/).

Remarkably I've never been in the The Babington Arms (JD Wetherspoon) (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7004/) and a few others that come recommended are:

Falstaff Tavern (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7073/)
Greyhound Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7104/)
The Peacock Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7179/)
The Smithfield (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7223/)
The Tap (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/63486/)
Little Chester Ale House (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/79094/) A micropub in the Little Chester area but there's also Coach & Horses (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7039/) nearby if we wanted a shift system.

Soupy and myself recorded a visit in 2009 here (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?600-The-History-Boys-on-Tour/page4&highlight=history+boys), that thread has a few other ideas especially from Hopwas (I wonder how he's getting on).

I have done most of these over the years, but Falstaff, Little Chester Ale House, and Coach and Horses would be new for us. I have also done Mr Grundy's, Five Lamps, Bishop Blaise, Metrobar, and the other spoons - Standing Order. Will go with the flow though as I can get up there anytime.

This is my take on a Derby pub crawl for those who dont know the city too well.

I would presume that most people would arrive by train and before traditional opening times,so i will start the pub crawl from the Babbington for those who want a cheap breakie and a pint.

1: Babbington Spoons
2:The Tiger ,if you run thirsty on the way to pub 3
3:The Tap
4:The Exeter
5:The Smithfield
a short walk under the inner ring road takes you to pub 6
6:The Peacock
7:The Furnace
8:Five Lamps
9:Horse and Groom
retrace steps back and go past the Five Lamps
10:Seven Stars, if getting thirsty while walking to pub 11
11:Flower Pot
12:Ye Olde Dolphin
13:Silk Mill
14:Standing Order, if getting thirsty while walking to pub 15
15:The Alexandra
16:The Brunswick, make sure to get here with a bit of time to spare, you will need it.

All of these pubs are easily walkable during a full day pub crawling and buses dont serve the Smithfield Peacock,Furnace and Horse and Groom.

Hope this helps a bit.

...or if your train journey to Derby involves passing through either Burton on Trent (on a train that stops there!) or Sheffield, it might be worthwhile getting a Derbyshire Wayfarer (http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/transport_roads/public_transport/tickets_passes/rover_tickets/derbyshire_wayfarer/default.asp). Just book your train tickets to Burton or Sheffield (as appropriate) and let the Wayfarer take the strain from there on. (Particularly good value for the over 60s, it has to be said!)

Thanks for the suggestions, Al.

Distances added from Google maps. I make it four and a half miles. It could be shortened a bit by arranging the route a little differently: eg start at Alexandra, then Smithfield (0.5 miles through park and across footbridge), followed by Exeter (with the Tap a wild card, perhaps) then Peacock, etc.

Perhaps we should do something similar to what we did for Leeds a couple of years ago, and make a sort of reserve list for those who haven't done Derby before. These would be the pubs we don't have space/time for on the main route that people can do on either the Thursday before or the Saturday after, if they have the time, money, stamina and enthusiasm. For example, I like the Falstaff, but it's quite small and a fair bit away from any other pubs, and would be a little overwhelmed by 16 to 20 of us arriving in one go, so might be better done outwith the main Friday crawl.

Interesting reading yours and Soup Dragon's proto-crawl. I agree with you about the start and finish points - this is one crawl where the Spoons is too far from the station to make a convenient meeting place. And the Brunswick opens at 11 anyway, so who needs Spoons?

The Little Chester micro is perhaps a little too far out - especially with the Coach & Horses acting as a kind of substitutes bench. It's half a mile from the Peacock and then another half mile to the Furnace afterwards.

Suggested route:

Brunswick (11 until 11:45ish)
Smithfield (opens at 12)
Exeter (wild card: Tap)
Peacock
Furnace
Five Lamps (wild card: Horse & Groom)
Mr Grundy's (wild card: Greyhound)
Golden Eagle (if thirsty on the way to the next pub!)
Flower Pot
Dolphin (wild card: Silk Mill)
Babington Spoons
Alexandra

That's 12 plus wild cards, so possibly needs a little trimming, or some pubs relegating to wild card status. I've left out Falstaff and Bell & Castle from my original suggestion, as too far away from the others.

What think you?

Sounds like a sensible starter for 10, does this route require a plus bus ticket ,or is it walkable ?

Good question! Mostly walkable, I'd say. Not more than 10 minutes between pubs - that's a guess, but I can put it into Google maps like I did for Al 10000's first shot. But it's a bit of a trek back to the station from the city centre, so a bus for the last leg might be handy. Not sure if that justifies the expense of an all day ticket though. The trouble with bus routes is that they don't conform to the positions of the public houses: a sad oversight by town planners.

Total walking distance 4.3 miles.

I've managed to keep walking times down to 10 minutes between pubs (0.5 miles on Google maps) but this has entailed switching the Greyhound and Mr Grundy's, so that it is the latter that is now a wild card. (Collectors of these are assumed to have a predilection for walking.)

There is a bus from near the Wetherspoons in the city centre which cuts out most of the walk back to the last pub near the station. This brings the walking distance (not including wild cards) down to 3.8 miles.

This is still early days - feedback is expected from fans of pubs not mentioned so far, asking why theirs are not on my list: it's just a suggestion, please put forward your own ideas.

That looks like a great list Will. I'm not too familiar with Derby, but the one pub I remember being keen to do after my last visit was the New Zealand Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7167/). Doesn't look like it's too far from Mr Grundy's but it'll obviously add a bit more walking to the route, so maybe best suited as another wildcard option?

Good call, Leigh. I missed this one when I did a little tour around some of the outlying pubs in Derby two years ago. As you say, it could be another wild card, but let's see what feedback I get for my suggested route and particularly the walking distances involved. If people don't mind the extra mile (it's 1.5 miles going from Five Lamps to Greyhound via Mr Grundy's and New Zealand Arms; 0.5 miles direct), we could add this one to the route and reinstate Mr Grundy's too!

Yeah, I'd forgotten about that one. It's a sister micropub to the Little Chester Ale House (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/79094/), I believe. We could certainly add it as a wild card - as long as no more than 15 of us want to do it!

Currently £20.50 e/w from that London. Who's waiting for the megatrain (~30Sep)?
Surprised the Tap is not on-map, even if it's slightly sterile inside. Don't know of Mr Grundy's; his first name isn't Bill is it?
Regarding distance from furthest pub back to station, we got a minicab (I know! what was I thinking?), a couple of visits back, from Flowerpot to Brunswick for only a fiver-ish. So if folk team up you should be able to do it for ~£1.50pp.

Neither the Tap or the Exeter would be top of my list, but as we're passing, it would be rude not to pop in.

As you know, there tends to be a certain amount of flexibility about these routes. I've only suggested "main route" and "wild card" options to get an idea of how much walking would be involved. Of course, if you're going to be cabbing it, that won't be a concern, will it?;)

Not currently sure I will be making this one, I reckon I will be able to get train tickets from St Pancras to Derby cheap enough,( maybe £15.00 E/W or so) but its £42.00 for me to get to London and back which given the current state of my finances a bit steep, had the trip been on a Saturday, more preferable for me, the £42.00 becomes £25.00 return to London a little more acceptable. Still keeping an open mind though, Derby is somewhere I would like to go.

After the stick I got from the other half for not making a weekend of it in York so that she could go shopping whilst we go drinking I took the precaution of running a weekend in Derby past her with the full expectation she would not be interested..

She's only gone and said yes, so reasonably priced City centre hotel booked for Fiiday night and one in the Dales for Saturday..

So don't have to worry about train times and will meet for breakfast at whatever the concluded time point will be

The Peacock is a few minutes walk from the Exeter, you do not need to cross any busy roads, just go under the busy road ,there is a pavement on the right side, the road then swings to the right, you can then get onto the old Nottingham road and the Peacock.

Well worth the short walk in my opinion.

Yes, but getting onto the old Nottingham Road involves crossing the busy main road just after it emerges from the underpass (https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.9258542,-1.4704295,3a,75y,168.49h,64.35t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sfsmQODqj-z1F4jL1zpMODw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656). Just making sure everyone knows that it's not a road that you skip casually across!

I'm glad you agree the Peacock is worth the short walk.

As is traditional I haven't kept up with this trip at all- probably to do with a goodie upcoming on Saturday 21st around the Black Country which RealAleRay is attending (and that Jacinta wan as well but sure life can never be too perfect....). But I have developed a bit of a thirst so never say never. I have various mobile numbers.

After a travel affected trip to Harrogate on Saturday left me in very poor shape yesterday (so bad it couldn't have been just the alcohol), and staying off work today, I sadly have to bow out of this one.
I know the principals pretty well, I'm sure you'll all have a great tour.

My upper arms are aching like mad having helped set up the Rochdale Beer Festival yesterday.

I was the delivery checker and general cask lumper as we took 78 casks and moved them to the upstairs grand hall
4 at a time in a passenger lift.

I'm working at the fest on Friday, so have a good crawl yawl.

This week's pub crawl is looking to be jinxed. So far those not coming, for a variety of reasons, include ETA (#24), ROBCamra (#32), Mobyduck (#53), Maldenman (#57) and trainman (#58), with an_ecumenical_matter (#50) and now aleandhearty both doubtful. I seem to remember gillhalfpint saying something about not coming to Derby when I bumped into her and Ray at the Steel City beer festival a couple of weeks ago. (Egham, was it, instead?) And unfortunately Strongers, as recorded in another thread, has had to cry off due to a sad family event.

Those that seem to be coming include
Bucking Fastard
Soup Dragon
Dave M and Tammy
Quinno
Gann (and Mrs Gann?)
rpadam
Real Ale Ray (and Jacinta, I assume)
sheffield hatter and Catia

Both oldboots and Pubsignman have made useful suggestions about the planned route, but I don't think either of them has confirmed attendance. Anyone else?

Unfortunately I've had to rule myself out of this one. I spent a small fortune drinking lots of (inferior) beer at the Munich Oktoberfest a few weeks ago and now I can't really justify this one financially. :(

Hope you all have a great time and I'll look forward to reading the reports and reviews.

But she should make a couple, especially those such as the Flowerpot close to our digs in the Jury's Inn

A big thanks Quinno for getting me to the station, finding the platform and pointing out the correct train to get on.
My emergency cheese and onion bap purchased in the Furnace brought me around, so made it to Nottingham ok.
I ended up in the new micro pub the Barrel Drop, where I indulged in a 5.4% ale on stillage.

I couldn't find my hotel and had to phone Mrs Ale for directions, which didn't go down too well, am defo in the dog house.
Really enjoyed the PG crawl as per, great day out !!!

Now I know you were drunk! Quinno went for an earlier train. It was me and Catia who walked you to the station and pointed you to the right platform (we made our own train too, but only just).

Glad you had a good day out. How you ever found the The Barrel Drop (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/82706/) I will never know.

I don't like sticking my oar into these threads but I was very pleased to note that somebody made it to the New Zealand Arms which as far as I know is a proper brewery owned Dancing Duck pub. When I went there last year I got a bus out and stayed for several pints. It meant I was a shambolic wreck by the time I got to the Alexandra & Brunswick and probably even before then but it was well worth it.
