Looks like Dave has been at work adding a new 'Pub Type' feature that is now appearing on certain pub pages, e.g.

The Queen Hotel (JD Wetherspoon) (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/13198/)

I wonder whether this field will also be editable via the 'Correct details' button too?

Eventually there will be a way for users to add information. For now I am busy gathering data from PubCo directly to do as many as possible in one go.

I think I have about 5,000 pubs with brand/owner info. Working on M&B and Marstons at the moment which should add another 3,500.

One question, is it worth maintaining the distinction between JD Wetherspoon and Lloyds No 1?
Given my recent visit to Nottingham I would say yes but the bigger picture to me would say no.

I would say yes too. When in Manchester I dragged my workmate to the spoons for food and had to defend taking him in the Printworks Lloyds as he classed it as rubbish over the other spoons we'd been in for food. I was ticking a list he was being dragged round Manchester without choice. So if any casual drinker decides they don't like a Lloyds it's important that they aren't mislead on here.

I had a similar experience with two Lloyds in Nottingham but the first one was just a normal Spoons with a muzak track playing. Given the fact there are still quite a few hard core Lloyds around I think you are right.

Good stuff, but I wonder if "Pub Type" is a bit of a misnomer? "Pub Owner" (i.e. who owns the business if a pubco - or free house - not necessarily the freeholder) might be more accurate. A type of pub could be anything - e.g. quiet, flat roof(!), music venue, old man's, gastropub, etc, etc. Just a thought, and not really important.

Is the intention eventually to provide a set of categories/types?

EG:

Micropub
Gastro Pub
Cafe bar
Cocktail bar

or

Tied to [brewery]
Freehouse
Chain [chain name]

or do we just leave those sort of details in the reviews?

You are quite right that Pub Type isn't in the slightest bit helpful. I toyed with pub brand or pub owner but neither quite works for all cases. I'll come up with something better than 'type' though!

Honestly not quite sure where it will end up, but the idea is just to give people a quick and easy clue as to what a pub might be like.

Listing Greene King etc as pub type will be helpful as it will assist in people knowing what to expect to a certain extent whether it be with prices, food availability and range of drinks if unfamiliar with the pub.

Regarding the ETA suggested terms if pub has a picture, website link and a review along with pub facilities ticked off it should help a potential customer for a fairly confident opinion of what the pub/cafe bar will hold. You can have Gastro pubs which are still very locals pubs my closest pub is one and I've never eaten in it but drank loads.

Stick with it Dave if it's mostly autobot to implement which can be opened up to users to add details too.

Some kind of mixed up reference here, The Two Rivers (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/57511/) I can categorically confirm that this is not a Harvester. I reckon the correct Harvester is in town. If there is to be a new category of dump, then this can go there. Edit, looks like The Harvester once had this name, not any more.

Looks like you are right - there is a Harvester listed (http://www.harvester.co.uk/restaurants/southeast/thetworiversstaines) on Tillys Lane TW18 4BL - it's not on Pubs Galore. Is it a pub? It can't be any worse than The Two Rivers (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/57511/) you reviewed today!

Ah Staines, my old stomping ground! That pub always threatened to be decent but almost-always ended-up being awful.

I walked past it, just named "The Harvester". Didn't look like somewhere you can drop by for a pint.

All the Harvesters that I have visited have had a bar, should you want one of their usually poor range of drinks.

That is my feeling about them too. They do seem to vary a bit though, near me there is one that is fairly pub like in some ways and another that it is hard to consider being anything other than a restaurant.
