As requested in the 100 not out thread (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?1867-100-%28not%29-out-amp-Ale-Festivals-Birmingham&p=11240#post11240) these are the up to date County stats advanced on since the last one at the end of October (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?529-Friday-Stats-County-information). I have also attached a zip of the csv from which this information is built to this and the last thread.

West Midlands is looking good.

Anyone fancy a trip to the Orkneys or Shetlands?

Do the pubs with reviews, pubs with photos etc stats relate to all pubs or just open pubs? (Obviously the demolished pubs with no current photo or review are never going to get covered)

I've done the Orkneys! Didn't get much time there but had a couple of pints in Kirkwall but it was in my pre-review days and I wouldn't for the life of me remember which pubs we did.

The pictured/reviewed numbers relate to the closed pubs as well.

Would you recommend a visit or go again yourself?

Absolutely! I'd be up there tomorrow given half the chance. We did a wildlife boat trip around Stroma, a small uninhabited island just off John O'Groats which is a must if you like that kind of thing although 100,000 guillemots perched in a cove do tend to reek a bit. We also went to the mainland and did the ancient sites (Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar etc) which are fascinating plus there are plenty of interesting WW1 & 2 sites as well as Scapa Flow where the German fleet was scuttled.

We went up there during the World Cup '96 and stayed in Fort William for the first week and then some obscure village I can't remember the name of about an hour's drive from John O'Groats for the second. Pubs are few and far between anywhere in the Scottish Highlands and islands and as far as the Orkneys are concerned, apart from Kirkwall on the main island you won't find much. I would think there would be a few Orkney beers (Red MacGregor seems to be the one that usually crops up in the real world) but don't expect much variety if you go.

Maybe Euro96 or World Cup98? But why on earth would you wanna be in Scotland then?
World Cup94, maybe...

RogerB
07-04-2010, 07:36
I woke up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night having realised that there wasn't a World Cup in '96. I thought no problem, no bugger will notice before I get into work at 8.30am and amend it to '98.

Call me a sad geek with too much time if you like, and you'd probably be right, but I had a look at the stats since Conrad provided the CSv version. For those who like this sort of thing there are some interesting surprises.

Coverage, or if you prefer penetration, is easy so here's the top 10 (based on pubs with a review/photo as a percentage of open pubs) Octobers rank in brackets

Reviews
1. Central London (3)
2. Greater London (4)
3. West Midlands (1)
4. North Yorks (2)
5. Kent (24)
6. Shropshire (9)
7. Hertfordshire (32)
8. Surrey (16)
9. Staffordshire (8)
10. East Riding of Yorkshire (5)

Photos
1. Essex (11th for reviews)
2. Central London
3. Isle of Man
4. Greater London
5. Lancashire
6. W Midlands
7. Buckinghamshire
8. W Yorks
9. Kent
10. Greater Manchester

The bottom five

Reviews
Shetland, Orkney, Armagh, Londonderry and Fermanagh

(for just England in reverse order Rutland, Nottinghamshire, Gloucestershire, Tyne & Wear, Lincolnshire)

Photos
Shetland, Orkney, Armagh, Western Isles and Londonderry
(for just England in reverse order Rutland, Tyne & Wear, Gloucestershire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire)

and finally where we have been busiest adding reviews between October and now (as a percentage rise)

1. Hertfordshire
2. E Sussex
3. Lothian
4. Kent
5. Central London
6. Borders
7. S Yorks
8. Gtr London
9. Shropshire
10. Antrim

:D

You are always welcome to any numbers you want, but just in case you are bothered you should do your numbers as pubs with a review/photo as a percentage of all pubs.

I don't imagine it will make any real difference, but I would need to give you different numbers to supply that.

oldboots
07-04-2010, 15:14
It makes a small difference to the percent photographed, the Isle of Man moves up to top place, Manchester drops out and Central Scotland comes in, but then it's easier to photograph a closed pub than to review it :)

Conrad
07-04-2010, 15:38
Here is a more complete data file, it is taken from last nights backup as the query I wrote took 25 minutes to run .

Because we didn't get them at the time it is prohibitively complex to work out the state of play from last October.

Andy Ven
07-04-2010, 19:33
Call me a sad geek with too much time if you like

I was going to say that the most notable difference between you and I is the amount of time we have available until I stopped and thought how many evenings I had spent putting Birmingham into order. I thought about doing some similar analysis but you've saved me the trouble of indulging my particular aptitude ... or obsession, if that's a better word

Sounds good. I quite fancy hiring a tourer and driving around in a big loop but I wouldn't want midges to spoil my holiday (I accept we can't do anything about the weather). What would be a good time of year?

What would be a good time of year?

This is Scotland we're talking about. There is no good time of the year. You just have to get lucky! We were exceptionally lucky with the weather for the 2 weeks we were up there but there were plenty of midges around in June/July. Another thing to remember is that at the height of summer it doesn't get dark until 11ish so you get long days for exploring.

I must dig out my old photos - there might actually be some of the pubs that I can scan in.

Just spent the second half of the Man U v Munich game fingering my way through the 1000ish photos I took. It was actually 2002 so wasn't as long ago as I thought. For some reason there were plenty of Woolworths that crept into my photos but not a single pub!

That's just too bizarre, and more than a little unsettling.

It wasn't intentional. I just happened to notice that every High Street photo (Wick, Thurso, Fort William, Oban) centred on a Woolworths. Maybe I should start a Pick N Mix Galore website or a "who's been to the most Woolworth's" thread. Also took some shots on Loch Ness and there this big dragony type thing in the background.

I've done the big loop twice for work (tough job :p) and once for pleasure, we went from Aberdeen across to Inverness up the coast to Wick, along the top then down the west coast ending back at Glasgow. Highlights were driving over Applecross, my wife's first sight of Glencoe, "that" cafe in Helmsdale and practically anything in Wester Ross. From experience the best time is late April-early June, you should normally avoid July and August at all costs. The "pubs" are not that special but there are a few gems. I find a suitable dose of alcohol in the blood will discourage midgies.

We did the loop the other way round from Glasgow to Oban and up the west side, across the top, stayed at Bettyhill and John o Groats ( went to Orkneys) then down east side..

Loved Applecross. Loos by car park had sheep using them as a barn! Had to stop on a hairpin bend for deer to cross. Loved it. Highland Games at Durness.

Have to "do" Scotland at least bi-annually or suffer withdrawal symptoms. One place where beer is a bonus not a necessity.

Are pub reviews and photos on your itinerary next time?

Did you do it by car or camper van (and, depending on your answer, what accommodatioon did you stay in or where did you hire the van from - or do you own your own?)

Apologies for so many questions but I'm interested in the logistics

trainman

Did you do it by car or camper van ?

Gill is our famous caravanning beer tourist and I, for one, both admire & envy the freedom & the mission!

gillhalfpint
09-04-2010, 17:42
Gill did that Scottish tour with a 5 man bungalow tent being towed in a trailer, but there was only 2 of us in it. Lovely and roomy. Stayed at Oban, Gairloch, Scourie on the way up, and realised why it was a 5 man tent when we were at Scourie and it was blowing from the frame like a blanket on a washing line and we needed extra men to hold it down while we got it pegged. Persevered the rest of the holiday without mishap though. Wonderful places up north that looked like moonscape. Rocky and wild.

Enjoying the luxury of pulling a touring caravan round now though. Cornwall for 3 weeks in May, Belgium for 3 weeks in June and so it goes on. The hardest part is the planning. So many places....

Andy Ven
11-04-2010, 19:50
I have another question. How long would you allow to travel the loop and see the sights?

gillhalfpint
12-04-2010, 20:32
We did it in 2 weeks. Most of it was spent going up the west side and across the top as they are the areas we love the most. It doesn't allow much time in each place though.

Andy Ven
12-04-2010, 20:35
Still sounds fun.

Would a camper van manage to negotiate the roads OK or would some sections be tricky in a large vehicle?

gillhalfpint
12-04-2010, 20:42
Camper van should be OK. When we did it we were in a Skoda pulling a trailer loaded with tent etc, and managed a few single tracks with passing places on our way round. It is a fun thing to do. We often found more foreigners than English on the campsites, especially Dutch, and I would love to do it again. Not sure about towing the caravan round though.

Andy Ven
13-04-2010, 07:17
I bought a big colour coffee table picture book last year from Amazon by Dennis Hardley called Secrets of Scotland. I planned a rough list of places to go to just from that but I will look into the places that you mentioned. Further research needed, I think.

gillhalfpint
13-04-2010, 08:40
Research is so hard. I could spend a couple of months on the west coast easily and not get bored.

Gairloch was a weird site. We drove on and saw folk wandering round looking like those Smash figures from the spud advert. Various coloured round heads. Turned out they were wearing muslin thin headscarves tied over their heads to keep midgies out. We made the mistake of setting a meal up outside the tent and were fair game for them. Only place we had bother though. Walked to Poolewe and back from there. A lot fitter then.

Scourie was wonderful. Tiered site curved round like an ampitheatre so everyone got a view. If you get there, have a drive down to Handa Island. If memory serves me right it is this road where the rocks look bare and moonscape like. Strange for Scotland.

Oh heck I will get mordling if I continue. Love it to bits and only going up on East side this year to Kinross area. Unless we just go in October....

Went to Loch Carron in December once, and hired a cottage about 10 years ago. That was amazing and as I love snow we did get some up there. Thats when we did the Applecross run. Lovely cottage by Sea Loch, and if tide was up it lapped on the cottage road we had to go to park up, and we drove over seaweed. It had a real fire and was so cosy though.

Always say we will be back....

Sorry for me barge in but I couldn't help reading this thread.

Went to Scotland twice in 2006 and again 2007. Visited Lossiemouth, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Nairn, Inverness, Elgin, Aviemore plus few small towns I can't remember. Best of all was viewing over Loch Ness in two seater plane (Which I was co-piloted) and Highland is just so awesome.. Would love go back again. Also loved these Scottish pubs especially 8/- beers...

Please feel free to chip in. I'm going to print off comments and ask my Glasweigan friend during our Dudley crawl on Friday and see what he suggests as well.

If you have lots of time and want to see a lot of Western Scotland you could go from Glasgow up the A82 along the side of Loch Lomond. At Tarbet you could go into Argyll and head down Loch Fyne from Inverary then head to Lochgilphead. Here you can go south to Kintyre or just go as far as West Tarbert and get a ferry to Islay - 9, or is it 10 now, distilleries and 1 brewery. If you head north from Lochgilphead to Oban you can go to Mull and back in a day, then head back on the A85 towards Tyndrum - the detour through Glen Orchy is extremely nice and you come out at Bridge of Orchy. Rejoin the A82 and cross Rannoch Moor then go slowly through Glencoe. Head then to Fort William where you could take the road to the Isles and Mallaig. Don't forget Ben Nevis is here. Heading up the A82 please stop at the Commando memorial for a moment, just up the hill from Spean Bridge. Going up the Great Glen I like to turn off at Invergarry and head out on the A87 past the Five Sisters of Kintail and Eilean Donan castle. You can then head over to Skye for a couple of days, (as well as Talisker there's a brewery at Uig at the ferry port) or go up the Stromeferry road on the scenic tourist route (with the famous "No Ferry" sign). Go into Lochcarron where there's a couple of decent hotels then you can tackle the road to Applecross - the highest public road in Britain. Single track, hairpin bends and sheer drops, great fun if the weather is clear, superb dramatic scenery and views of Skye. From here stick to the coast and at Kinlochewe make the trip up the side of Loch Maree to Poolewe - a place with a fascinating World War 2 history. From there head for Ullapool and the Falls of Measach on the way, I've always missed them but they're meant to be spectacular. From Ullapool you can get a ferry out to the Western Isles if you feel like it, an interesting experience. Carry on up the coast for Scourie and Cape Wrath and then Tongue. You could go on as far as Dounray, Thurso and John O Groats or turn south through Glen Naver. Either is good and one way or the other you would end up near Dingwall and a short drive into Inverness. From there you can go back down the Great Glen taking in Loch Ness or use the A9 down to Perth or go over to Aberdeen for a view of the northern Lowlands, a very different type of Scotland to the Highlands. A word of warning, there's very little traffic in the extreme North West, everyone is curteous but they like to drive at 80mph all the time. There are of course other fine parts of Scotland, the exciting city of Glasgow, Dumfries & Galloway, Ayrshire, Edinburgh and the Borders for example but the North West is my favourite.

Its so good to hear someone else raving about the places I love. So many of my friends down here say Scotland - why go there - its full of midges!!

They don't know what they are missing.

Just to feedback some comments of my Glaswegian mate.:

Oban is a working port so there are salt-of-the-earth types around there but Connel Bridge and Port Appin nearby are both nice.

He also mentioned Plockton, Skye, Ullapool, the Great Glen Road acros to Inverness then down to the bottom of Loch Ness then further down and cut across at Invergarry to the A9 to Dalwhinnie then north and east to Braemar or Perthshire.

Gairloch - quite nice
Glencoe - with its wild goats is a must see
Inverary - quite nice, nice castle

He wasn't very complimentary about Fort William. There's not much there for the locals and therefore has its social problems.

I also found this website which looks quite useful http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/index.html

Conrad,

Just to go back to the original thrust of this thread, is there any chance you could generate some updated stats for each county so we can see which ones are lacking coverage?

I am a little strapped for time at the moment, but made a note of it and hopefully should be able to rattle it up over the next week or two, feel free to hassle me if not done in a week though.

Anyone fancy a holiday in Orkney to review and photograph the 24 pubs there.

Or any of the Islands off Scotland.

Londonderry is a bit thin as well, or is "Pub photography" and note taking a very risky business in Nor'n Ireland?

Well we're off to Belfast for a few days soon which might help Antrim a little. Armagh is even worse with only 1 pub with a review!!

What becomes apparent from this data is that the largest conurbations in England are well covered but pubs in Northern Ireland, Wales and the top half of Scotland are short on reviews and photographs. According to the CAMRA website, there are just 10 Scottish CAMRA branches, 1 Northern Ireland branch, and 17 Welsh Branches. That's not too many to e-mail to ask them to post a PG link to their website (quid pro quo)!

In England, Gloucestershire, Lincolnshire and Tyne and Wear need a boost

Andy Ven
23-03-2011, 20:03
Just discovered that only 5 of the 13 CAMRA branches in South and mid-Wales have a website, although virtually branches in North Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have a website (Dumfries being the exception).

Conrad / Dave - is it still possible to add a web link to the page for each postal town? I started with Cardiff http://www.cardiffcamra.co.uk/ but couldn't see a button to suggest a link .

At the moment it is not possible.

The town link functionality needs rewriting to work with the new pages. As we don't exactly have that many of them we decided it wasn't as high priority as actually getting the new areas changes out.

To be fair though some this stuff was covered last year and we came up with a much better offering to CAMRA branches (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?2300-Site-promotion). So far Forth Valley are still the only branch to get all the extra promotion.

Andy Ven

I remember the thread. I tried a few local branches to no avail but I thought I'd have a go at the areas on PG where there isn't much coverage, such as the Welsh CAMRA branches.
