St Just is a bit further West than Penzance, not far from Cape Cornwall and Land’s End, and, despite its tiny population of 4,600, has four pubs on its picturesque town square. On Saturday, we paid them a visit.http://boakandbailey.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/kings_arms_dog.jpgThe King’s Arms, with photogenic dog and tourist-attracting red phone box.http://boakandbailey.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/kings_bar.jpgThe bar in the cosy saloon bar*at the King’s Arms, with open fire, and a bloke eating pork scratchings at the counter.http://boakandbailey.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/tribute_kings.jpgA pint of St Austell Proper Job at the King’s: ever-so-slightly hazy (we don’t mind that) and tasting fantastic.http://boakandbailey.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/wellington_hotel_closed.jpgThe Wellington, one of three St Austell pubs in town, wasn’t open.http://boakandbailey.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/commercial_free_house.jpgThe Commercial, the only free house in town, serves Doom Bar as good as we’ve had it, which isn’t saying much, and also has a pool table and a big telly.http://boakandbailey.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/commercial_glass.jpgStained glass above the main entrance.http://boakandbailey.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/star_inn_exterior.jpgOne of many Star Inns in Cornwall, this is among the prettiest.http://boakandbailey.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/star_inn_window.jpgThe window of the Star.http://boakandbailey.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/star_inn_glass.jpgIn the corridor between the lounge and saloon.http://boakandbailey.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/star_pint.jpgA pint of Cornish Best in the lounge, with the dartboard. (The main bar was full of rugby fans, standing room only.)http://boakandbailey.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/rugby_club.jpgThough they’re not really pubs, for completeness, we skipped the rugby club…http://boakandbailey.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/legion.jpg…but probably could have had a pint at the Legion, if we hadn’t had a bus to catch.===
DrinksTube, Jamie Oliver’s drinks channel on YouTube, is launching a campaign, ‘Show Us Your Local’ (#ShowUsYourLocal (https://twitter.com/hashtag/ShowUsYourLocal?src=hash) on Twitter), to get people to shout about and share what makes going to the pub special. This is our contribution.
