→ After winning multiple gongs at the British Guild of Beer Writers annual awards, we took a moment to bask in the glory and ponder what might be next (http://boakandbailey.com/2014/12/won-award/).
→ We considered the refurbishment of a pub in Penzance (http://boakandbailey.com/2014/12/refurbishment-narrative-decline/) and what it might say about the prevailing narrative of decline that surrounds pubs and town centres.
→ Expanding on an idly Tweeted thought, we found ourselves thinking, yet again, about how hard it is to judge beer on its own merits, without regard for brewery marketing or fan hype (http://boakandbailey.com/2014/12/under-promise-over-deliver/).
→ And, in a related post, we considered exactly what the hipster point of view might be in relation to beer (http://boakandbailey.com/2014/12/hipster-school-of-thought-no/). (Our first attempt was a bit clumsy, so we added some further clarification a few days later.)
→ In 2013-14, we noticed a lot of bars acquiring breweries, and plenty of breweries setting up taprooms or taking on pubs (http://boakandbailey.com/2014/12/bars-that-brew-brewers-with-bars/) — vertical integration is alive and well!
→ Thinking aloud, and based on some rough’n’ready research in our own collection of books and papers, we pondered when the Christmas ales we all know and love — spicy, brown and with novelty names — first emerged (http://boakandbailey.com/2014/12/where-did-christmas-ales-come-from/). (Ron Pattinson responded here (http://barclayperkins.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/how-old-are-christmas-beers.html) and here (http://barclayperkins.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/more-christmas-ale.html).)
→ We suggested a few blogs which lead with images rather than words (http://boakandbailey.com/2014/12/eye-candy-beer-blogs/). (Among others, commenters recomemnded*Brew Bokeh (http://brewbokeh.com/) — a new one to us.)
→ Tasting beers from our wish list (http://boakandbailey.com/2014/12/pre-wwii-us-ipa-euro-mashup/), we found the BrewDog/Weihenstephan collaboration India Pale Weizen ‘brash… but good fun'; while a Stone/Smuttynose clone of Ballantine IPA c.1933 was, we concluded, worth the £9.73 we paid for the bottle.
