I have some spare time on my hands so I thought I would help identifying closed pubs that have slipped through the net.

I think that the Three Old Castles Inn is closed but I’m not sure if the below evidence is conclusive enough having no knowledge of the pub or area myself.

Wrong link for street view, but been up and down the street on street view and can't see any obvious pub apart from the existing Quarry Inn, so I am guessing the pub no longer exists.

Another one, The Lion (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/31365/) in Culham is now a house (http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-18903465.html).

Is it ok to post closed pubs here for checking rather than putting the links on the pubs home page?

Another one, Machine Man (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/57933/).

I've been down Fieldside on Streetview and not found a pub.

There seems to be a concensus on the dark side (http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/25/25434/Machine_Man/Long_Wittenham) that this pub closed many years ago.

As far as I'm concerned, Yes it's fine. I'll happily check out any on this thread that any PuG member wants to flag up.

It's no longer listed on Keinton Mandeville village's own website either, so it's gone.:(

It was however a listed building, so I'm guessing the conversion had to be sympathetic to whichever bit was listed.

Closed 8 years ago according to the local paper The Herald.

The Oxford Mail also agrees.

The Moss Cottage (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7534/) is reported as being residential (http://www.hline.co.uk/news/moss-cottage-hotel-in-ripley-sold-to-local-investor/). The Whatpub link (http://whatpub.com/pubs/AMV/506/moss-cottage-ripley) also says currently closed.

I've had a look at this one before and couldn't confirm it's gone.

Whilst you cannot currently book rooms their website says

"We have just acquired the hotel and have some exciting plans to refurbish the public areas to offer a choice of dining facilities with both Traditional English and a separate Asian restuarant in the same building."

I think I'll mark it as closed for refurbishment until further information becomes available.

Sounds reasonable enough.

I've just marked the Peace and Plenty (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/70589/) in Rye as closed with a note that it is now operating solely as a B&B. I'm not sure how you want to proceed because I'm a little uneasy with marking a business as closed when it has only changed its target market. Maybe it would be better if I just updated my review from last year so that it informs readers of the change?

Surely if it's a B&B it's no longer a pub. If it had become a supermarket it would have changed it's target market and everyone would expect to see it marked as closed, wouldn't they?

What you are saying makes sense, but the name of the business hasn't changed like it would if it had been turned into a supermarket. My point was that we are saying the peace and plenty is closed, which it isn't.

What I did forget is that the reason given for closure is shown at the top of the pub page so anyone that interested in the place would read that it is now only a B&B anyway.

I see your point, there is a precedent as there used to be a Timothy Taylor's pub above Hebden Bridge called the Mount Skip. It's still called that but is a B&B and it doesn't appear on here OR What Pub. I haven't bothered to check the Dark Side.
I think it's fine as you've left it!

It's sold with vacant possession according to Rightmove, so I've closed it. Lets wait and see what happens next!

The County Hotel (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/15642/) in Canterbury is now called Abode (http://www.coolplaces.co.uk/places/uk/england/kent/canterbury/344-abode). I think that it can be deleted from the site because it is my understanding from Gill, PSM and rpadam that the hotel bar for the Abode is the Old Brewery Tavern (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/69790/).

It seems that the Eight Bells (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/74139/) in Wingham Well was converted to residential (http://www.zoopla.co.uk/property-history/bell-house/wingham-well-lane/wingham-well/canterbury/ct3-1nw/19306554) use in the mid 1990s.

"Until the mid 1990’s Bell House was a public house known as The Eight Bells. No evidence of the house’s life as a pub remains today, apart from the large beer cellar, now fitted with light and power. The Eight Bells featured in several 20th century books on Kent pubs. We have converted the pub restaurant into a reception hallway with oak flooring and partial oak panelling, also creating a sitting room, study and two bedrooms (one with en-suite shower room)."
