Does that mean that the scabby old scrotes that are usually around at 10:30 if I have a JDW breakfast will actually be pissed by then in future?

Handy for early beers before England's World Cup matches

With matches kicking off at 8.30pm and 4.00pm, that would indeed allow plenty of time for beers beforehand.

Most of them will only serve alcohol from 9am though, not before.

It would be interesting to know if this is a licensing restriction or a self-imposed restriction for marketing/PR purposes. If for instance I went in for breakfast at 8:15 and asked for a pint with it would they serve me.

Would be Handy If they were too serve Ale with The Breakfasts Especially for People Like Me that do Night Work.
It means I could Nip in for a Few Pints after I finish my Night Shift at 07:00 In the morning and have a Few Pints and a decent Breakfast before going home too Bed. :)

One to watch perhaps, they might be doing a softly softly - first open for a few months whilst 'trialling' serving alcohol from 7 in a few, then expand...

Difficult to understand why JDWs would want to muscle in on the early morning trade of the downmarket ( no insults intended ) cafe. Often clustered around a bus/ train station these low comfort formica topped table and plastic chaired "caffs" are better positioned for the early morning trade. Whats more these places have a name for quick service .Sometimes being staffed by family members customers can be known by name and their catering needs known before the customer opens the door or his mouth to order.
I can appreciate Alesonly comments having been a shift worker all my life. It used to be that there were few shift workers in town centres, the natural place for a JDW, may be things have changed with the UK's industrial base having gone down the pan.

Ironically Both JDW's in my hometown with Bus Stations standing next to it! I often have brekkie and coffee in The Bole Bridge whilst waiting for bus to Birmingham. So 7am opening would be very useful as most cafe opens from 8am in town.

I think it is just a test to see if it is profitable, quite a good idea for their chain I would have thought, If McDonalds can make money out of their effort I think JDW has a chance.

I have noticed JDW almost always to have their pubs next/near bus and train stations.

West Bromwich's JDW stands directly opposite major bus station, Walsall's the Imperial is mere yards from bus station and Brum's Square Peg is on main bus stop route.

As for McDonalds, it stands exactly in the middle between Silk Kite and The Bole Bridge! Interesting fact about our Maccy's.. Tamworth's McDonald's is the world's slowest service and it was confirmed by Maccy's HQ!

OK Hoppy , I will bow to superior knowledge you being a JDW specialist:notworthy::notworthy::notworthy:
The ones in Worcester are not really close to bus station (but one is close to the railway ) and Hereford is on the walk into town. But if I wanted quick service it would be a cafe for me. Having time on my hands I would probably go to JDWs and nick a crossword out of the newspapers. Some one else always beats me to it.
Perhaps the only time I have visited Mc Ds is when stopping in a hotel and one was near at hand. The coffee is crap but the bacon rolls used to be cheap and pretty good. I have not tried SubWays, and I found BurgerKing expensive ( but I like their burgers.)
I now have this overwhelming urge for a bacon roll. This will mean a walk into town (Exercise) purchase some bacon and fresh rolls (Expenditure), unsuccessfully attempt to walk past my local pub ( More Expenditure) then walk back home (Exercise ) just in time for me to pig out on the steak and kidney casserole I have on the go in the slow cooker. Well I can always have a bacon roll tomorrow.:)

No they are not always near rail/bus stations, but when they are it can be very helpful. Breakfast in the 'Spoons gives much better vfm than from the station outlets!

Anyway, I feel sorry for the staff. I know they tend to work on a shift system, but I am sure they are likely to end up clearing up at midnight then opening again for 7 am. Any JDW managers out there?

Conrad

This is a question that was intriguing me and Dave the other day, we were wondering how JDW's are run and what the managers responsibilities were. It was basically a part of the ongoing tie pub debate where we were trying to work out how the tie effected JDW managers. We came to the conclusion that they were responsible for stock levels and not drink selection, if anyone knows though I would love to hear the answer.

The Spring edition of Wakefield's CAMRA mag popped through my letter box this morning. Inside was this little gem:

'Abashiri Brewery in Japan makes something called Bilk, which is a beer made with 1/3 milk. As it contains milk they have to watch it doesn't boil over in the copper. It has the same colour as normal beers and smells like tea with milk once the fermentation process is finished and the drink is cooled.'

Sounds like a godsend with the new breakfast opening hours. "Good morning. I'll have the Bran Flakes and Bilk meal deal please barman"...... (You can put my consultancy fee in the post Tim. Thanks.)

Left something in JDW in Sheffield once, rang up to enquire if it had been handed in. Asked to speak to manager, and they said which one - they had 14 managers!

They did have the bag and posted it to me by the way.

A chap I knew would visit McDs on Friday ,using the drive through to purchase chips and chicken shapes (?) for his four kids.He realised that each of the chicken portions was consistently one short of the advertised number. After smouldering for a while he stopped in the car park ,went into the resturant and had it out with the manager. After being given his missing chicken pieces he made his way back to the car only to have the bottom fall out of the bag and scatter the contents across the tarmac. The wheels on his car mashed them to pulp on the way out.
Beware of angering members of the spirit world, the patron saint of McDs has eyes everywhere.

Seeing the above post about drive in McD reminded me of our odd confrontation whilst working in Florida, our condo [yeah, MPs eat your hearts out] was opposite a shopping area, with a McD drive through, or is "thru"?
Anyway we just walked across and tried to order, which caused consternation, people walking and a funny accent. We gave up and went in whatever the supermarket place adjacent was called & bought a ready cooked chicken

I remember that debate and have to say I thought there was some truth in it. It may be one of those apocryphal stories but I remember hearing that in the early years Tim Martin, rather than doing the research himself, just looked for premises in the general vicinity of a McDonalds. Apparently McD’s, who'd spent millions on market research to find the optimum sites, twigged what was going on and got a bit pissed off about it. If it’s true it does show how astute he was even back then.

JDW following MacDonalds seems to be true. In London (where tube/railway stations invariably have both nearby) and the South East, which I know well, I can think of only one town with a JDW and no MacDonalds - Leatherhead. Many towns have MacDonalds and no JDW, yet...

No Mcdonalds in Market Drayton , but there is a JDW the Hippadrome , the first JDW in Telford was the Church Wickets in Dawley miles from any Mcdonalds though the Thomas Bottfield is near enough under the Mcdonalds at the town centre , the 2 in Shrewsbury are at the other end of town from Mcdonalds as well

Waterlooville, Hants. Although as yet no JDW there is a McD. Rumoured that JDW is going to open opposite McD and McD is going to go elswhere. It is only a small McD, and the town centre seems to be either chartiy or coffeee shops, at least one will never starve there

I'm surprised that anybody has fallen for this, a classic piece of faulty logic.

McDonalds look for sites where there are lots of people (some of whom might wish to buy fast food).

Wetherspoons look for sites where there are lots of people (some of whom might wish to buy beer).

Therefore, Wetherspoons are following McDonalds?

Er, no. They are both looking for places where there are lots of people...

You could equally well say that McDonalds are following train stations. Or bus stations? Or cinemas? Or Marks & Spencer? Or Boots? Or (insert obvious location of your own choice)...

I have noticed McDs, BKs and Pizza Hut on small retail estates. The type which may have Lidl /Aldi, Comet,BlockBuster, Carpet and pet stores. I find these places in the edge of towns or large housing developements. The modern day village stores ?. There may be a pre existing pub closeby, which has been enlarged, but I have not noticed a tendancy to build new ones. In my area the pubs tend to be Marstons or Greenking ( no surprise there ) and serve the local population and make a decent job of it.
JDWs do not appear to have migrated so far from the town centres yet but there is a shortage of monumental buildings in this type of area.
Perhaps JDWs will take over GreenKing just to prove the urban myth true....Nahh...lets keep a bit of choice however slight the differance.

That has to be an improvement. And so the Empire marches on. Spreading the word to the masses that real ale is good ,but if you dont like it we can always sell you a lager. Compromise and please everyone.

( Woke up far to early for the Grand Prix........FOUR BL**DY HOURS TOO EARLY. Bet I fall asleep half way through )

You can add my very own Silk Kite to the list.. Was Chicago Rock until JDW puchased it last year in the summer
