Off to Northumberland for a week tomorrow and the wife has just made the strategic decision to move up and spend the following weekend in Edingburgh as we are so close..

No time to research the thousands of option available, so any suggestions of "must do's" to search out whilst we are there would be highly appreciated..

Blue Blazer (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/48807/)

The Bow Bar (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/48908/)

Guildford Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/48954/)

Thomsons Bar (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/64723/)

All ticked the main boxes for me a few years back.

Presume Mrs Gann is doing the driving then? Only 45 mins up the road after all... :D

These are usually reckoned to be the classic Edinburgh pubs,

out of Waverley old town side, cross the road and halfway up the (steep) stairs
Halfway House (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/48958/)

then in the Old Town
The Bow Bar (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/48908/)

and in the New Town
The Abbotsford (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55815/)
Cafe Royal Circle Bar (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/48829/)
Guildford Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/48954/)
The Oxford Bar (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/49056/) (Rebus connection)

There are a few more further out of the centre, I particularly like

Athletic Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/48772/) (The Diggers)
Cask and Barrel (Southside) (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/48984/)

and this New Town 'Spoons has a very impressive interior but can get very busy - good for breakfast though and the back entrance is down the road from the Abbotsford,

The Standing Order (JD Wetherspoon) (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/49141/)

You could also try Leith if the touristy bits of Embra get too much, there are a couple by the old dockside
Teuchters Landing (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/67936/) is the GBG listed one.

Of the four mentioned by Oldboots which I've visited myself, I concur with three, but would suggest that if it weren't for Rebus the Oxford Bar would not be on anyone's radar.

Not far from the Cask and Barrel (Southside) is Dagda Bar (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/49075/) which is worth a look in. Further south in Newington, if you're out that way, I would suggest Leslies Bar (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/64708/) and the Old Bell Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/49045/).

One that might tickle your fancy is the Cloisters Bar (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/48872/). And I quite liked Berts Bar (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/63452/) but took an instant dislike to Teuchters (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/64722/), which is a shame as it's directly opposite.

Enjoy your visit.

Many thanks everyone, all duly noted..

Quinno, we are staying in Alnwick so its a little bit further than 45 mins , but still significantly shorter than the total journey from N21..
And Mrs Gaines has pulled a master stroke by finding a reasonable B&B in Edinburgh for the Saturday and Sunday to extend the Northumberland week.
So should have plenty of foot walking time, without worrying about the wheels, to tick off some of the suggestions..

Ahh, not exactly beer related but you might want to pay a visit to Barter Books at the old station in Alnwick, just to make it beer related the (few*) beer books are in the big second hand bit, immediately left, bottom shelf. The really interesting books are on the right in the glass cases.

* few because I've usually had them first :D

The Holyrood 9A (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/48971/) is located just off the royal mile

The Doric (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/48897/) and Jake’s Place (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/79667/) have a good central location and are close to the already mentioned Halfway House (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/48958/)

Kenilworth (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/48989/) on rose street

Cask & Barrel (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/48849/) broughton street

Cumberland Bar (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/48889/) in the new town

Many thanks all...

Now returned a day later then planned as we had such a great time (and weather) in Edinburgh, and by complete luck timed our visit with the Edingburgh Jazz festival week, we extended for another night in the B&B.

Ticked off several with the personal highlights being the Halfway House, Bow Bar, and the Guildford Arms (especially as we combined it with the Cafe Royal, which the wife really liked as well ).

But managed to get in several others, including all those around the Grassmarket as there were festival events taking place on the Market square.

And many thanks Old Boots, made it into Barter Books, what an amazing place. I don't think I had so much fun inside a building that is not a pub for a long while..
