Very pleasant, with a few rough edges.

I passed the Cock and new Hackney Tap last night but didn't go in as I had 'mobile beer'. Rough edges at the Old Oak?

I'm in Huddersfield this Saturday - any local correspondents kicking their heels that day are welcome to drop by, though I cannot guarantee my group's progress will be organised, or logical(!), but it will include the main targets, including the now visible Star (thanks Will!).

Any local knowledge for a suggested location for ~3hr debrief on Sunday would be appreciated, short-ish train or bus journey would be good. (Halifax, Brighouse?)
We'll be travelling back via Leeds, but not drinking there while LUFC host Liverpool..!

I would have joined you for this, but am on holiday in Scotland this weekend.

Halifax is good. The Three Pigeons (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/40530/) and the Victorian Craft Beer Cafe (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/82635/) were the best, as far as I recall, and the Grayston Unity (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/84203/) is worth a visit if you like your pubs quirky. (There's also this new one (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/89283/), which needs a photo and review, if you wouldn't mind. :) )

Off to Walthamstow today to check if the good ale pubs around Hoe street have survived the pandemic, and then try out what is becoming known as the Blackhorse Beer mile. Hopefully will gather enough positives to be able to put together an Aqualung memorial crawl at a later date.

I am planning a trip to Belper with some Sheffield friends. As they are working and I am retired, they have picked the day: Thursday, 18th November.

I went to Belper a few weeks back and concentrated on pubs I hadn't done before. All were very good. I have no reason to believe that all the pubs I had previously been to have gone downhill, so this makes for a remarkably good group of pubs for a town of around 20,000 people. My only plan so far is to start at the Devonshire (formerly the Duke of Devonshire) near the station, which opens at 12 noon, and finish just across the road at the Riflemans Arms, which is a later opener at 4pm.

Check these out:

Devonshire (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/6693/)
Lion (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/6729/)
Railway (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/6718/)
Old Kings Head (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/6714/)
Angels Micropub (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/84285/)
Nags Head (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/6711/)
Grapes (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/6697/)
Queens Head (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/6717/)
Belper House (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/89377/)
Arkwrights (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/81840/)
George & Dragon (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/6696/)
Riflemans Arms (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/6720/)

The middle section, from the Angels to the Belper House, involves the most walking, including some steepish hills, but the other eight are fairly close together near the centre of town. There are others I haven't been to yet (the Tavern, the Cross Keys and the Thorn Tree), either because they are a bit out of the way or because they have not been open when I've been there. I will be looking again at all these pubs in more detail nearer the time, especially with regard to opening times.

Belper is reached by train via Derby (there's also a bus service), and we are going for the train that gets into Belper at 12:45. Return trains to Derby are at 16:36, 17:35, 17:59, 18:35 and then roughly hourly. If anyone is interested in joining us, that would be great.

Not quite Belper (see this thread #517 (http://forums.pubsgalore.co.uk/showthread.php?1742-Your-plans-in-upcoming-weeks/page52)), but another trip to the same part of the world. This is pencilled in for Wednesday 6th July, or possibly two weeks later on the 20th, depending on whether anyone gets back to me!

Holly Bush Inn, Makeney DE56 0RX 13:20 – 14:20
Dead Poet's Inn, Holbrook DE56 0TQ 14:50 – 15:40
White Hart, Bargate DE56 0JA 16:00 – 16:50
Black Bull's Head, Openwoodgate DE56 0SF 17:05 – 18:05

We will be getting trains to Duffield (change at Derby) but returning from Belper, so it's another chance to take advantage of the Derbyshire Wayfarer (see document below for details).

A good friend is planning a (2yr) belated 60th crawl around Yerkshire in Jan, taking in a couple of ticks variously in Wakey, Leeds, Osset, Hudds, wants to add Three Pidgeons in Halifax which he really liked on a one-off (very hungover) visit, and to include the WRRR. Next day debrief In Sheff and mop up any missed musts.
Now, I know that's a lot of travel (a poor miles to beers ratio) and will include some taxis, and I would be tempted to skip Leeds entirely but it ain't my gig (he doesn't have the Grove on his list after a disappointing visit a few weeks back!) but, as we are in the area and will be intermittently independently mobile, do any of our regional specialists have any hidden gems to suggest in/around the rhubarb triangle area, which we may ordinarily miss out on...?
Many thanks, j

Yerkshire? Osset? Pidgeons? Jesus, Jim what had you been drinking when you wrote this! :D It all sounds a bit loosey-goosey at the moment to offer any meaningful recommendations. Probably need to see a provisional itinerary, at least. However, going on the places you mention and avoiding all the usual suspects, I'd recommend the Banker's Cat in Leeds, Prop'ur Baa and Brewer's Pride in Ossett, County Beerhouse, Huddersfield and Grayson Unity, Halifax.

I'm off to Huddersfield today so will visit the County Beerhouse for the first time.

Off the beaten track is a bit difficult for me to recommend as usually go by train myself as well when drinking. However I lived in Leeds 2004-12 and two outside the city centre that spring to mind are the Chemic Tavern half way to Headingley, and the Garden Gate in Hunslet. Hours might be restricted in January though!

Not in terms of beer, but if you're happy with lager it's great. We went in one place and just wanted a quick half before grabbing a bite to eat. Apparently the only measure they do is a two-pint jug. Oh well, when in Rome.... Somewhere else was absolutly enormous, the capacity must have been about 1,000.

I'll try and dig out some names. It's a lovely place and I'd like to go back. Oh yes, and you have to have curry sauce with your bratwurst.

Do you mean drinking in Munich or going to Oktoberfest in Munich, which are totally separate things. Well they ought to be, but sadly the big breweries have all set up Oktoberfest-type beer halls and gardens which run all year for the tourists. There are still many genuine pubs/bars/restaurants and there is an active craft sector (like the Tap House (https://www.tap-house.de/en/#locations)) and some smaller traditional breweries like Schneider (https://www.schneider-brauhaus.de/en), but if you want something completely different search for Boazn, the locals' bars, especially in the Giesing district. Sorry I haven't been for years so I won't recommend anywhere specific but you can find various listings on the net (just don't expect websites). Speaking of Giesing however, I have heard good things about Giesingerbrau (https://www.giesinger-braeu.de/).

Thanks Pangolin, sorry I didn't see your reply before I left but I did mean Munich outside Oktoberfest, but on a football trip that boundary may be a little blurred!
Just back this morning, 1am, after 4 days in das feld.
Augustiner seems to be very dominant, especially around the central Marienplatz area, but their helles and dunkel is fine. I had Tap House on my list but didn't manage to get over there, even with a day to kill after the boys had left early Fri, I just forgot! But I'm passing through again in Oct(!!) but after the festival, so will bear the above in mind. Prost!!

As mentioned elsewhere my trip to London is planned when the season ends. The aim was to tick a few of the oldest with a couple of extras thrown in.

Straight down to Wapping first to do the The Prospect of Whitby (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/54491/) and Turners Old Star (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/25361/) (because it was in the film Legend!).
Then all they way up to Hampstead (hopping off at Tottenham Court Road to do The Flying Horse (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/22388/) because my drinking partner for the day is a Spurs fan!)
Planning to do the The Holly Bush (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23720/) and up to the Spaniards Inn (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55736/).
Back down to Holborn for a Spoons lunch and then the The Seven Stars (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/22067/), Cittie of Yorke (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/21917/), Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/56162/), The Old Bell (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23507/) and maybe The Black Friar (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23505/).

Rough plan of course and it might not pan out that way but should be a good day with plenty new ticks for me!

If you want to go on the Legend (https://www.reelstreets.com/films/legend/) trail, there are four other pubs; done four out of five and all good.

If you're in NW3, the Flask (right-hand, front snug) is a very pleasant place for a drink and just three minutes' walk from the Holly Bush; the Spaniards is a bus ride, but worth a look.

Not been in your reserves or Retreat this year so can't judge them, Nags,Alehouse and Fox and hounds are top 3 for me, Greyfriar ok a couple of months ago. Maybe Castle Tap worth a look.

Anglo-Espana Ale Society heads to Derby in Jan, dangerously overnighting, with a debrief in Beeston next day.
Another endurance challenge, enjoyable, but scary for vital organs.

I'm visiting Shropshire over Easter, staying in Telford and hopefully getting over to Shrewsbury too. Any must try pubs in these areas I should look out for? (Real ale bars ideally).

Strongly recommend a short jag to Oakengates and the famous (here) 'Golden Triangle', especially the Station (https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/32757/)
I really must try to get back there soon...

Am walking the final stretch of the mainland section of the Wales Coast Path after Easter, so hopefully will get a few blanks from up that way populated.

Otherwise, it's the GWR freebie card every Saturday until the end of the year :)
