During our recent crawl of Worcester there was talk of a summer meet up again this year.

The only questions are where and when....

Glad you all had a good time.

Were there any thoughts about the location for the next one?

It's all a bit slow today at Fastard Towers, however it was a very enjoyable crawl around historic Worcester in great company as always.

There were some discussions about a crawl in July before the school holidays begin (Often a time when rail deals may start to evaporate.)Specific dates and venue were not touched upon, and should start a lively debate,if anyone is feeling fit to get the ball rolling.
Brighton?

Brighton?

I would love to do a Brighton crawl, but I'm not sure that July would be the best month to do it.

Well that would certainly rule many of us out right from the start.

I think we'd informally agreed that we'd try and do a South-North-Midlands (or combination thereof) rota so no-one suffers (or maybe gains, depending on your viewpoint) overly in travelling costs/time when the cycle's done. Seeing as we've done Leeds then Worcester (which I guess most would call Midlands, yes?) then South seems the next logical choice, or certainly the one after next.

Or we could simply divvy up where everyone lives and do a 'weighted' geographical list

Depending on date, if anyone was looking at a cheapo to London, I may be able to offer 2 rooms accom before, or after, a jag to Brighton.
And don't forget to look at the amazing value of groupsave within the southerndaysave (http://www.southernrailway.com/tickets-and-fares/ticket-types/daysave-off-peak/) ticket, working out at £7.50 go-anywhere, if in a group of four.

Oh, I don't disagree with the North-Midlands-South idea.

But THAT far south?

I suggest the next northern one is in Berwick on Tweed or Penrith then.

Or if hondo is feeling a bit left out how about Aberdeen or Perth? ;)

Derby.
Bristol.

I can see the simple fairness in having a North/Midlands/South rota .I suppose Oxford,Cambridge and St Albans would all fit a "South" description.

We may have to have two summer trips as the restraints for many are the same, I couldn't afford (or justify financially, Leeds and even Worcester was a little on the rich side for me currently). A little sad but maybe a North /South divide is needed for some?

Sticking to that rota would mean it would always be the Midlands in spring, the South in summer and the North in the autumn. I suggest we try to be a little more flexible. :)

Northampton's an interesting idea, and fairly easy to get to from Manchester, Liverpool or Sheffield, though the journey starts to take on nightmare proportions for anyone coming from the direction of Leeds.

Derby is obviously much more accessible from all over the country and is chock full of great pubs. The idea of rotating North/Midlands/South is superficially attractive from the point of view of sharing the pain, but to say, for example, that Worcester is in the Midlands, therefore we can't do Derby next doesn't make too much sense to me.

I would consider Bristol, Oxford or St Albans as doable by train from Sheffield, but then I'm a bit of a pub crawl nut and would go stupid distances for a day out in a good real ale town. The first two named also have quite reasonable trains to/from Manchester & Liverpool. I wouldn't particularly want to do Cambridge though, unless Luton Town happened to be playing there too. :)

I have looked at doing Northampton has i have never been there, the last time i tried we were given a police escort away from the town because we were football supporters.

I found the ticket prices from both Nottingham and Derby far too much to get there,i even tried Birmingham to Northampton from both New Street and Moor Street, but it still cost £16 return from Birmingham.

I only posted this to try and help out.

Yes, it seems to be one of those places with no cheap tickets available - I've found cheap fares to Milton Keynes, which is further away. perhaps Trainman can enlighten us?

I've twice set out on London Midland Great Escape, intending a Rugby-Northampton combo, but trains and time conspired against on each occasion meaning Northampton is still virgin territory for me.
Think I only had 3 pubs on my list there though - I wouldn't imagine it to be a single destination mission for discerning PGers?

Myself and Mr Phat have been to Northampton quite recently, and Mr P lives quite closeby,I think you may struggling to find the usual quota of 10 decent pubs for a crawl around that town unless you also want to include the distant suburbs and a few wild cards.

Rugby is better if you want a "tight" town centre and lots of pubs, some pretty good.

I'm not too fussed if the next meet-up is North, South, East, West or anywhere in-between, but if it is to be down South, I'd be happy with any of these suggestions, although I think we should save Bristol for a landmark meet-up, like the 10th Anniversary of Pubs Galore or something similar.

I'd also quite like to do Bath - not sure how easy that is to reach on the trains.

I'd agree with that. There are plenty of boozers in Northampton but I can only think of 4 which I'd describe as 'must visits' and they're a fair way from each other and from the station. Rugby has at least 6 or 7 which are GBG listed and well worth a visit and many more which'll serve you a decent pint all within a relatively small town centre. Achieving the 10 decent pub quota would be more a question of what to leave out rather than what to include.

The town centre itself is something of a walk from the station but perfectly manageable and with the opportunity for 'rests' if required. In fact there are a couple of 'must rests' between the station and centre. It may have more options travel wise as well being on the West Coast Mainline.

It's on the main line out of London down to the Bristol and the South West. Otherwise you'd need to change somewhere, I guess maybe Reading or Bristol. The latter is only about 15 minutes from Bath.

The station is also quite central to all the pubs.

Agree we should save Bristol until a land mark anniversary, when would that be anyway?

All depends how you want to measure it.

The original version of Regulars Reunited, the forerunner to Pubs Galore that I created (and was crap and didn't really work properly) was launched on May 22nd 2003.

Later that year on October 1st we registered pubsgalore.co.uk (http://www.nominet.org.uk/whois/lookup?query=pubsgalore.co.uk) and Conrad set about making a version of the site that actually worked properly and audited stuff.

On January 28th 2004 we had our first audited review, which was of the Hollingwood Hotel by Alan Swain (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/core/pubaudit.php?id=6877).

At some stage during that year we officially changed the name from Regulars Reunited to Pubs Galore.

To kickstart the discussion again I would have a personal preferrence towards Rugby or Derby , as these are two towns I haven't been to for many a moon..
And falling into that category as well would be Coventry, which I've been meaning to get back to for a long while, although like Northampton, where I actually found the Shoe museum much more exciting than some of the pubs, I'm not sure it hits the 10 interesting pubs quota..

I would be quite happy with either Rugby or Derby.

Coventry is a bit better than Northampton for the number of decent pubs, and you could just about squeeze out 10 around the city centre (including the Chapelfields area) but trying to include the interesting Greyhound at Hawkesbury Junction (canal porn;) )would really use up far too much time given how far it is from the city centre.

It just seems like an arbitrary kind of anniversary to choose though. I'd go with choosing Bristol next year to mark the 5th anniversary of doing these kind of meet ups - that way it is more relevant to everyone.

Plus my summer is looking quite busy and it would be embarrassing if I can't make it to a Bristol meet! ;)

Rugby boozers worth visiting are:
The Merchants
The Seven Stars
The Victoria
The Raglan
The Alex
The Squirrel
The Lawrence Sheriff (Lloyd's)
The Dirty Duck
The London House
The Half Moon

Others which serve real ale include:
The Bull
The William Webb Ellis
London Calling (yes that is its real name)
The Rupert Brooke ( spoons)
The Rugby Hotel

All are in or close to the town centre and I haven't listed a few as I haven't been in them recently.

The Black Swan (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37168/) had only two ales on when Real Ale Ray was there recently (and a previous review suggested beer quality was an issue). The Half Moon (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37194/) doesn't have a review on this site - have you been there recently enough to provide one? Impressed that the Lloyds bar (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/67266/) has 10 hand pumps.

I wouldn't put the London House down as a possible visit, as it is the roughest pub in Rugby and were advised to stay clear. We did get the Half Moon at midday, and were told by the manager that they weren't open until 2pm during the week. I asked what ales were on and the reply was one ale which was Black Sheep.

I don't mind where we go for the meet up. Rugby does have some gems and if there is less pubs to get round, we can spend more time in them.

There are a few that don't open til later on weekdays (Vic 4pm, Raglan 2pm?) so if y'all end up here that's worth checking in advance...
I recall deciding to scratch the Alex from future tours last time I visited.

Thuck Phat

The Raglan opens at 4 pm on weekdays other than Friday I think when it's open all day.
The Alex has improved since being taken over by the owners of The Vic who also run the Atomic brewery from The Alex.
The Duck tends to have between 2 & 4 beers on generally from either nationals or large regionals. As to quality I haven't had an issue there but don't frequent it regularly as there are too many other decent boozers.
I haven't been in The Half Moon recently but it's still regularly used by a number of ale drinking friends with few complaints.
The London is a Marstons house which has long had a reputation for decent Pedigree. I didn't know it was known as Rugby's roughest pub, although there isn't huge competition for that title, so maybe a daytime visit would be most sensible or avoid it as there are plenty of others.

I won't manage the whole day I don't think but will certainly try for a beer or two.
Rugby launched my drinking career and has continued to sustain it but I do only tend to frequent the better ale pubs.
For what it's worth, those which I think are top of the visiting list are: Seven Stars (14 hand pumps), Alex (6), Squirrel (4), Vic (9 at least), Merchants (8 at least), Lawrence Sheriff (10) and The Raglan (8). Judging by their recent reviews, Mr Dragon and Mr Ray came to a similar conclusion. I've listed them in what seems the logical visiting order assuming that most people arrive by train.
Early openers are the Rupert Brooke and the Lawrence Sheriff, both 'spoons, and the Raglan which opens at 11 on Friday apparently. The Rupert Brooke is the closest of those to the station.
All are open all day it seems on Friday including the Vic and the Raglan.
Others which may be worth a look in inasmuch as they serve real ale and you'll fall over them on the way round include the Rupert Brooke, London Calling, The Duck, The London, The Bull, The Rugby Hotel ( if you're feeling Greene King withdrawal) and the Prince of Wales. Again, they're listed as you'd find them from the station.
There are various other bars and boozers but none which I've visited or heard of which serve decent, or indeed any, beer or if they do it involves a detour.
There's a noteworthy beer shop on St Matthew Street, The Rugby Tap, which is opposite the school on the way to The Raglan. It doesn't serve beer on the premises but has a decent selection of bottles including many from local breweries. Just in case the crawl hasn't fully sated the appetite!

Got a call at 9.00AM yeterday morning from a mate with a spare ticket and car seat to the Hawthorns due to a drop out and got permission from the one who must be obeyed to take the trip.
Was severely regretting it after 4 minutes of the game and feeling better about it after 97..
Then got home last night to find that the wifes side of the family had called and have thrown a get together on the 14th June in Cirencester to coincide with Fathers Day, and we were duly signed up to drive down on the 13th to stay with rellies..

Even if I had been quick and put it yje 13thin the diary on Friday I think it would have been overrulled..

I'm a bit skinto at the moment and I think the hand brake will beat me to death if I tell her I'm spending a weekend in June on the sauce. If anything changes I'll be there with bells on, fingers and toes crossed.

Like Gann, the curse on the PuG meet-up has descended once more. The day before Fri 13th was decided upon, I promised a friend I'd attend his fiftieth bash, in Sowerby Bridge, on Sat 14th, which will probably be a Leo Sayer. Reluctantly, I'll have to pass on Rugby. Twenty years ago, I might have managed both, but not these days, I'm afraid. :(

No pub visits and you're still skint?

Just shows. If you don't spend it in the pub you'll just waste it anyway. ;)

I think TP gave an indication in an earlier post but I would suggest that the early birds like me ,and those wanting brecky, should meet in the Rupert Brooke 'spoons which will open early.

From there it is worth doing all the "core" pubs on his list next starting at The Seven Stars at noon when it opens
Then The Alex
Squirrel
The Vic
Merchants
Lawrence Sheriff
Raglan

After that I would suggest the following wild card pubs ,but of course it is a tight town centre if folk want to go off piste to tick off some unreviewed pubs.

Half Moon
Prince of Wales
Black Swan
London House
Rupert Brooke (for those that didn't make the early visit)
London Calling

On the way back to the station The Wheeltappers is a good looking pub from the outside but hit and hope on the ale front.

Hopefully that should keep everybody busy.Folk will be leaving by train at different times, but even at the furthest point from the station, namely the Raglan,it shouldnt take more than 15 minutes to reach the platforms.

Apologies for not putting on links to the pubs, but as a starting point for the discussion I hope this helps.

I think you mean the 11:20 from Tamworth, I'm on the 9.11 from Leeds (Sheffield at 9.52) Tamworth at 10:48, but as I had to split this journey into 3 tickets I'll be changing seats at Sheffield and from coach D to coach C at Derby.

Quite right - 11:00 is the arrival time of my train into Tamworth. I have to use a train from Derby that stops in Burton on Trent, in order to gain maximum use of my Derbyshire Wayfarer.

Get IN! The Banbury split rolls again with my Railcard, so it's a 10.58 arrival and my choice of when to go back :D but probably 19.51 if I can keep going that long...see the early birds in Spoons I guess!

£28 all in. Cheap for those who can play the system (and quicker too than the London route).

Mrs A and myself also had a great day in t'field. It was good to meet two new faces aka Big Steve and Thuck Phat, it was also good to see our cider expert Tam in attendance. Our further travels took us to Stratford Upon Avon, Kidderminster and Bewdley over the weekend. A three day crawl, including Rugby, so now in the recovery position.
