Birthday crawl - sounds good. May be doing Hackney in a couple of weeks, so a few other options would be good, but I'll go with the flow.

I was thinking the other day that it was a shame that there was no London meet up in 2013, so I think it's a good idea to get the ball rolling early this year. Having said that, I won't be able to make this one as I'm going to be drinking my way around Bolton that day.

Will wait until you have a settled date that suits you all, and the places you plan to go to as London can be hard work for Ray. When details come out, I will see if we think he will cope ok, but good luck with the plotting and planning.

Lets stick with the 8 th and see. who can make it,.If most people are coming from outside London an east end crawl would add a lot of travelling. We could do Kings Cross and Islington or Kings cross down to Smithfield. The first is a good walk the second more bus friendly.Lets nail down who is coming then we can sort out the pubs . cheers john

I have done a bit of Hackney and Bethnal Green area which I like, but gets a bit sketchy further out, are the better pubs not a bit far and few between the further out you go? Have done the likes of The King William1V ( didn't particularly enjoy the nearby Drum (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/25128/)), Eleanor arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/24981/), The Grapes (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/25144/),all of which I enjoyed but did involve a fair bit of travelling. Dont mind trying a few new pubs but not at the expense of good beer. I am happy to go with your thoughts and recommendations though.

You lads might want to consider a rail ale crawl on the North London Overground line I posted a while ago.

http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/crawl/viewcrawl.php?crawl=1086

I made a mistake in the text and wrote Haggerston instead of Homerton, where I still think there is no decent pub.Since posting the crawl Canonbury Station now has The Snooty Fox (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55017/) closeby.

If you are starting at Liverpool Street you could always walk up to Shoreditch High Street station, get on the northbound Overground there and tick off Howl at the Moon (www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23661/)near Hoxton and Duke's Brew &Que (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23605/) near Haggerston station , before changing onto the North London Line at Canonbury.

Happy hunting !

I can only remember a pool table, my last visit ,at the time of my review was 3 months after JB's, although I had been there 2010 and didn't notice a snooker table then either, a quick check on the other side reveals a John Bonser review from 2009, he doesn't mention a snooker table but does a pool table, and no mention from Rex a month earlier. Maybe it was a short lived experiment.

There is the Plough near Homerton Station that is another rejuvenated Victorian dump. I haven't been to it but I know it has three handpumps which I think have local brews on.

There is also the London Fields Tap Room to consider which I visited last week. It has the advantage of opening at 11:00. I have a review of it awaiting it being added as a new pub. It is on the Whatpub site.

Thanks for the surgestions BF , have done four of the pubs on your crawl but would not have a problem returning to any although not overly impressed with the Pembury last time out,(early doors on a Tuesday so bereft of custom and less atmosphere than the moon). not done any of the others you mentioned , I suspect John probably has so will wait and see what the other guys think.

You're more than welcome. There is another development in East London but it's not near a station. This place (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55784/) has installed a brewery , I believe the owners are the ones who have the North Laines brewery in Brighton. It used to be the Falcon and Firkin way back and was one of the better Firkin brew pubs. I'm going to try and get to it this Saturday.

Fair enough, I agree it is well out the way (I'm struggling to find a route myself). There are so many possibilities it all gets a bit mind-boggling. At least you're doing it on a Saturday so the Antic and imitating pubs will be open at 12:00.

Yes, I did consider it. But then I undertook a risk assessment, focussing on the likely fallout from Mrs R and quickly concluded that it wasn't really a runner!

If you gentlemen on the crawl are starting early doors in the Hamilton Hall,I could forego my usual prematch pints in The George,Croydon and join you for the initial part of the crawl, given that I travel down there via Liverpool Street anyway.I need to be at Selhurst Park by 3pm,so will slope off to Shoreditch High Street Overground station around 2pm.

As Rex said,it does sound an interesting route.

Thanks for the offer, but so many "full price" pubs is just too expensive for me and that includes the Hamilton Hall. I'll be out somewhere the day before so will probably have a sore head.
I have to say I think you will be missing a trick if you don't include the London Fields Tap. On my recent visit there they had five cask LF beers from six pumps (the Porter was missing) plus several on keg including the First Born Barley Wine and Oak Aged Weizen Doppel Bock which were on special offer at £4.00 a pint, although they wouldn't serve pints of the Barley Wine much to my disgust. It's also only a few bus stops away from the Cock Tavern.

Also I think we want to visit a lot of pubs, one drink then onwards.I have read its probably the best of the London breweries with a bar. When they first opened I was given some prototype beers to try God were they bad.Now its a very good brewery. thanks john

Sorry for late reply all, but just returned from vacation in Cuba as 'Her who must be obeyed' demanded going somewhere hot for most of January as the "weather is bound to be shit at home !"
And looking at the reports of what we missed, especially all the flooding of the Thames near my firm, looks like she was right...

I think I am OK for the 8th , but will check tomorrow , which, just to stoke any potential green eye further, will be my first working day of 2014...... :-)

Its shaping up for a good day out. I have just been looking at the pubs suggested and looks a good mix, most will be new to me,I have been in the Kings Arms ,but 10 years ago. I would be keen to have a look at the North Pole as I failed to get there at my last attempt, a pub/bar that may be worth a look not mentioned is
The Hops And Glory (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23647/), between the Snooty Fox (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55017/) and the North Pole, (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23659/) John has reviewed it a year ago and more recently Pubsignman, sounds Ok to me. It is a bit cluttered with furniture. I have been to the last 3 fest on the first day and as they put on pretty exciting beers I have always been able to sit at a table with scoopers that I know.I am sure we can fit in but we can decide on the day.If its a mild day they have outside space to the front.

I don't know what format you want this meet up to be.At Reading and Leicester it was a social event rather than a yomp round the pubs.As I try to get new beers I am used to drinking halves so I am quite happy to get as many pubs in as you want. Any thoughts.

PaulOfHorsham
27-01-2014, 23:21
In my experience (maybe not as extensive as some), if there's about 10 or more pubs, it'll be halves for many. Up to about 8, pints would probably work. If the route's known (and there's not too great a distance between venues), folk can skip or make their own way.

Now where's the itinerary got to?

I reckon Soupy might disagree :D

Anyways I am usually a halves drinker when crawling so that suits me but I don't mind either way. Obvs making review notes in the space of a half can be a little tricky whilst also attempting be sociable ;)

It is sensible to agree an itinerary on line ,so that folk can plan to go off piste if they want ,and still rejoin the main crowd later. It also allows late comers and anyone disrupted by travel chaos to meet up with the crawlers.I am only around until around 2pm,but looking at John's original thoughts and allowing say half an hour per pub plus some walking time ,the initial route might look like this based on arrival times at the pubs

11am Hamilton Hall (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23422/)
11.40 Woodins Shades (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23453/)
12.20 Williams (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/25367/)
13.00 BrewDog (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/71556/)
13.40 Well and Bucket (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/71298/)
14.20 Kings Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/24952/)

After that there is a bit of a walk up the Kingsland Road and two suggested routes later on after Dukes Brew & Que and The Fox which I will miss out on :( so I will leave that part of the crawl to others.

After that there is a bit of a walk up the Kingsland Road and two suggested routes later on after Dukes Brew & Que and The Fox which I will miss out on :( so I will leave that part of the crawl to others.

It is sensible to agree an itinerary on line ,so that folk can plan to go off piste if they want ,and still rejoin the main crowd later. It also allows late comers and anyone disrupted by travel chaos to meet up with the crawlers.I am only around until around 2pm,but looking at John's original thoughts and allowing say half an hour per pub plus some walking time ,the initial route might look like this based on arrival times at the pubs

11am Hamilton Hall (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23422/)
11.40 Woodins Shades (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23453/)
12.20 Williams (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/25367/)
13.00 BrewDog (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/71556/)
13.40 Well and Bucket (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/71298/)
14.20 Kings Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/24952/)

That sounds sensible, we can decide which route we want to take from the Fox between now and then ,if not all of them.

Looks like I am OK for Saturday but with the proviso that I have to do something in the morning that will keep me busy till 12'ish..

So to confirm, is the early running order still as replicated below ??

11am Hamilton Hall
11.40 Woodins Shades
12.20 Williams
13.00 BrewDog
13.40 Well and Bucket
14.20 Kings Arms

If so I will probably head to Shoreditch , which is fairly straight forward on the connections from N21, and meet you in the Brewdog..
This is where the route gets interesting for me anyway as the first three are commonly used watering holes and I was in the Williams last Thursday before moving over the road to The Shooting Star.

13.00 Kings Arms
13.40 Well and Bucket
14.20 BrewDog

Good luck tomorrow!! This sort of event is clearly not for me as I only drink pints and tend to go for the stronger ones. The only thing that might get me into a Brewdog pub would be the thought of a pint of their Formidable IPA, but I dread to think what that would cost. If you add to that the fact that I would probably be in the HH before 10:00 then you should think yourselves lucky that I won't be there!!!

It was probably this place - The Duke of Cambridge (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/54274/) They only sell organic beer, so Pitfield's Eco Warrior is often available.

Glad you had a good time and I look forward to reading the reviews.

Remember the gay couple on Grand Designs who built a flint farmhouse and started a brewery? Myra Butterworth meets them to taste their latest product.

Founders of the Two Cocks Brewery Phil Palmer and his partner Michael Butcher featured on Grand Designs at the end of October this year after quitting London to build a twenty-first century farmhouse in Newbury.

They moved into the property in January 2009 and began farming, which proved to be a great success. But forever the creative types – and to help make the venture work financially – Michael had a ‘ping moment’ on walking down one of the farm tracks to find hops in the hedgerow on one side and a borehole on the other. They had the beginnings of a micro brewery, and immediately began researching online for courses. (They are both qualified as brewing masters).

They funded the venture with some of the money from the sale of their London property.

Yes it was this pub, and I remember it well because I went to the bog only to discover a whole separate dining section with silver service laid out beyond the toilets, and after having a gawk around that came back to find that I'd been abandoned and you'd all Foxtrot Oscar'ed.
Anyway no harm done as I would have made my good bye's at that point anyway and headed off to the Angel..

Once again many thanks John, a thoroughly enjoyable days..

As well as a very varied beer choice throughout, there were several parallel highlights for me as we went through the day..

Arsenal getting a right stuffing, even before we'd left the fourth pub..
Catching a bit of England demonstrating how to play a full contact sport on a quagmire...
But the outstanding highlight has to be the "Two Cocks" brewery discussion in the North pole..... that was worth the entrance ticket alone...:D

Ok well I've had a little fiddle with the search engine, this is how the search for Tap Room looks now (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/search.php?search=tap+room). I'm certainly happier with that, just not sure what knock on effects there might be, I'm sure you can appreciate that enabling what are effectively wildcard searches can be a dangerous business when it comes to databases.

Just getting the reviews sorted for this, having a look over at the other site just now I see a review on the Woodins Shades from one of my favourite ex-BITE reviewers, the redoubtable Widescreen:

Plenty of new plasma TV screens, but unfortunately completely wasted by being fed a non-widescreen picture making everything look fat on them. Both the subscription payer to Sky and the customers are losing out, and staff didn't seem too bothered, despite my raising the issue several times. I might try one more time now that Hamish has gone (not that I have anything against him - he's just not as... efficient in getting things done)
