Just been having a look at the pubs we might be going to in Worcester tomorrow with Redditch and Bromsgrove CAMRA. We haven't been for a number of years and things have changed since then.

The meeting place is the Postal Order and they say they are including:
Firefly - Paul Pry - King Charles II - Cardinals Hat. (All new to us).

GBG pubs around the centre are:

Dragon - Plough.

GBG in St John's area if we get over the river:

Bell - Berkley Arms - Wheatsheaf.

Reckon if you want Worcester for the next PuG crawl, it could well be a grand day as there are many decent pubs around.

Gill.

I am sure you will have a good time , The Plough appears to be having a lot of building work done at the moment lots of scafolding around it , hopefully it is not closed when you get there .
I really like the Wheatsheaf , great views of the City from the astro-turfed rear patio and theres a footbridge just down the road by the railway viaduct you can use as a short-cut to the Dragon .

Thanks for the tip. I have found the bridge. Not sure what the plan is, but I fancy going over there and wondered what the best way would be. Will see how it goes tomorrow.

Is the Dragon the same outfit as the Bottom-Wellie in Sheffield then?

The chap that owns the 2 pubs Dragon Worcester and Wellington Sheffield) was drinking in the Paul Pry when we went in. I didn't know who he was at the time. There was a Little Ale Cart beer on in there and I made comment and mentioned Cask And Cutler, and he just said that those words were not allowed. Someone in there told me who he was so I went to say sorry, and we had quite a chat. He said after all he has spent to revert the Sheffield one back to it's original name there are still people calling it Cask and Cutler to wind him up.

Many thanks to Gill for her excellent research in Worcester and for her quick upload of her reviews. It sounds like there are plenty of interesting pubs to visit in Worcester, many with decent real ale. There has also been a ground swell of support for Worcester at both the last two crawls so lets talk possible dates.

Fridays have proved popular but with the need to book advanced tickets (possible deals on the London Midland network ?) it might be sensible to consider February or March.Any Friday would be fine with me ,apart from the last Friday in each month,Feb 28th,March 28th.

Saturdays are an alternative but football fixtures can get in the way .I couldnt make Feb 8th,22nd,March 8th ,March 29th.

I am sure that once some momentum builds up on this thread,Dave can change the title to show this thread is about an "official" PuG crawl.

As things stand at the moment we are ok for Any Friday/Saturday Feb and March apart from 1.2.14.

Beer festivals around Fleetwood 6-8 Feb, NWAF Derby 19-22 Feb, Beerex Sheffield and Burton 14-16 March if they would interfere with any plans.

Worcester is so easy to get around from pub to pub, and there are plenty of others that we did not get to. We did a kind of circular walk meeting up in Postal Order and finishing at the Dragon.

All Saturdays are out for me, Fridays are not.

Saturdays are more difficult for me workwise, particularly as I may need to keep some for football towards the end of the season (this echoes BF's earlier comment). Also I think the pubs are a little less crowded on a Friday afternoon, at least before 4pm.

Two pub crawls?

Perhaps we should be thinking of extending the range of possible dates into April (leaving aside Easter weekend, of course) since previous experience suggests it takes quite a time to reach a consensus, and for those coming from some distance away the price of train tickets can be a crucial consideration. Tickets for February have been on sale for a few weeks already, and March will mostly be available before New Year.

Can't find any Great Western advance tickets, but did remember that a Network Card (or annual Goldcard season) does stretch as far as Worcester to get a third off tickets from London and the South East.

If you split the tickets it's a lot cheaper.

Rochdale to Man Picc £4.20 day return

Man Picc to Birm New St £17.10 there, £15.50 back

Birm New St to Worcester day return £8.40

£17.70 from Reading as Worcester is somehow within the network railcard area plus has direct (if convoluted) trains. Probably something to do with how the rails were divvied up pre-war or summat....? Crackers that it's cheaper to get there than Chippenham...

It'll take me 2h 40m there and 2h 15m back. Arriving 12:09, departing on the 18:24 (Foregate St). (The later trains seem to take a lot longer getting back to Sheffield, somehow.)

Has anyone worked out a pub crawl route yet? The Dragon Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42426/) seems to be handy for Foregate St station, or does anyone know of a better place to meet?

I would agree that The Dragon is a good place to meet, interesting ale line up.The Postal Order (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42497/) ('spoons) is probably a good final tick for those that need to catch a train at the end of the crawl.

Hi all,

The Salmon may leap again !!!

Now got an eye on this one. It all depends on work - thats the trouble with weekdays !

With any luck I can arrange things but too soon to say yet.

With Cradley Heath being on the Worcester to Brum line trains aren't a problem so I don't need to book tickets at least.

About 35 - 40 minutes and £7.70 return sounds good to me.

The spoons is right by the station so it would be a good end with people getting different trains etc..

The Dragon isn't much further up the road.

Cheers,

Del.

Was in Worcester yesterday, not a bad pint was had all day. (Can't get this thing to go to the next line or to do those nice links you all manage so it'll look rather odd!!) But the idea would be meet in the Dragon Inn around 1200/1230 http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42426/ ,then back around the corner to the Paul Pry http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42488/ , followed by the Cricketer's http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/63069/ . Then I would propose a leg stretch to get to the Plough http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/64464/ and then back cross town to the Cardinals Hat http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42409/ (hopefully the disinterested "I-LOVE-ME" blonde bartart who was on yesterday isn't in attendance !!!), next would be the Eagle Vaults http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42429/ (alas Marstons only) then the Swan With Two Nicks http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42516/ (seems to be under new management and much improved yesterday) with the King Charles http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/80226/ (very good Craddocks and Sadlers). Across the road through ASDA will lead to the Firefly http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/57361/. I've done a rough idea of a crawl based on AEM's post @ #54, with the addition of the Bell in St Johns and possibly also the Wheatsheaf too (mentioned in Gill's post @ #1 but missed by her and Ray according to her later post @ #5) as optional alternatives. This may not suit everyone, but I like a bit of a walk to break up the crawl - some of the later pubs are very close together and could be done by literally crawling.;)

I would consider the Farriers Arms on the road back to the high street from the Plough. The Swan with 2 Nicks is pretty poor these days IMO I would have at least one extra one in the King Charles - whose pies are meant to be very good if looking for food. If you're feeling hard core and there is a late train back go to the rugby in the evening!!! There is a real ale bar and as you probably know you can drink in the stands!

I have re-jigged my draft route to try to accommodate the suggestions made (see attached) with approximate timings that suggest it might be possible to get there for 4 while still remaining sober enough to find our way back into town for the last few pubs. The possibility of missing trains now looms ever larger, though, as the crawl now features 14 pubs. :nishelypished:(The numbering has gone a bit funny, so that the last pub is now no.7, but I counted them carefully and it's definitely 14.)

Bee beep beep newsflash

BUSH INN, Worcester, Bull Ring, WR2 5AD. The Bush has reopened having been bought buy a local businessman, Andrew Boughton, who owns six pubs in the Worcester area. A range of local micro-brewery ales is there to tempt you. Thanks to Mark Haslam for this good-news item..See the entry on the Heritage Pubs web site. http://www.heritagepubs.org.uk/pubs/real-heritage-pub-entry.asp?pubid=10124

I suggest we add this one...

Excellent news, I haven't been in the Bush for years,as visits to the city always seemed to coincide with a period of closure. A little research found this article in the Worcester Observer, which suggests there maybe a one-room apartment on the ground floor. Hopefully, it won't have impacted on the interior too much.

http://worcesterobserver.co.uk/news/flats-plan-will-see-pub-reopened/

I suspect it will be our last call of the day which ever way the route pans out. (Mrs a&h is going to be joining us for at least part of the day and her father lives just down the road).

I wasn't at the Postal Order (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42497/), so can only report on events subsequent to the full meet at the Dragon (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42426/). I had Beowulf Folded Cross 4.3% and Little Ale Cart Old Black Nose 4.7%, the latter being a typically over the top one-off from the brewery behind the Wellington in Sheffield. The first splinter group formed almost at once, with Quinno going off to the Saracens Head (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42506/) just across the road with RAR. The full baker's dozen reformed in time to make the short trek around a corner or two to The Paul Pry (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42488/) (excellent Ludlow Best 3.7%) and The Cricketers (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/63069/) (Prescott Hill Climb 3.8%). The former was a great pub, with lots of features both external and internal that some of our reviewers will no doubt be dwelling upon - was it a wake or an AGM going on in the other room?. The barman at the latter coped admirably with AEM's jovial attempts to help him serve food to the lunchtime shoppers, and the first three pubs (or four - or five if you count the 'Spoons) can be counted a success.

The next pub was either a mile away or just around a further corner. Non-walkers luckily missed a horrendous shower of hail and heavy rain as the other nine of us walked beside Worcester's racecourse and over the river, but we arrived at The Wheatsheaf (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42536/) as the sun came out, forming a rainbow over the retrospective of the city. The Wheatsheaf was an excellent village local, and we enjoyed St George's Bitter 4.1% and were entertained by a local couple and their greyhound before undertaking the walk into St Johns for the next stage of the crawl.

The Bell (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/65673/) is a popular local, being quite busy by the time we reached it on a Friday afternoon - does no one work in Worcester after 3pm? I had Hobson's Old Prickly 4.2%, which seemed to have something to do with a hedgehog charity, unless I totally misunderstood the pump clip. We found room for us all (OK, there were only nine of us) in a snug to the right of the front door. We went a little off-piste at this point, after I persuaded the group to try The Berkeley Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42395/), five minutes' walk up the road. I had my first not quite right beer of the day here - Marstons/Elbow Charge (http://www.elbowbeer.co.uk/news/), a rather bland, boring and frankly tired beer which I'm reliably informed is not surprising considering who was involved in the brewing.

We next made our way to the recently reopened Bush Inn (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42407/), where we were reunited with the splinter group and the barman kindly took a photo of the whole bunch (which someone else will be adding to this thread, no doubt). A second poor beer here (Prescott Track Record 4.4% - bottom of the barrel), but I washed it down with a better half of Prescott Hill Climb before we made our way back into the city.

The Plough (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/64464/) was probably my pub of the day, but that's not to say the others were no good - there had been some crackers up to this point, but the Plough is the last one of which I have a clear memory. Church End Grave Digger 3.8% was an excellent ale here, and then it was a sprint finish: The Farriers Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42431/), The Cardinals Hat (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42409/), The Eagle Vaults (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42429/), The Pheasant (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42491/), The Swan With Two Nicks (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/42516/) and The King Charles (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/80226/) II flashed by in the space of just an hour, if my notes are to be relied upon (to be fair, not everyone did all of these :) - thanks for keeping me company, Quinno) and we all (as far as I could tell) ended up in The Firefly (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/57361/) at 18:45. I had a half of craft brewed stout at an inflated priice - I'd tell you what it was called if I could read my notes. :nishelypished: Luckily I checked the time half an hour later and was just about able to make a mad dash for my train back to Sheffield at 19:28.

Hope everyone else got home all right.

Glad those that made it had a good day, just as well I didn't make it ,opting for the more financially friendly Winchester for the beer festival with the plan of notching up a few new pubs before and after the dreaded lurgy took a serious grip on me so had to cut my day short. Coming back from Winchester was bad enough , Worcester would have been seriously bad news, I did manage three pubs before caving in.

It's all a bit slow today at Fastard Towers, however it was a very enjoyable crawl around historic Worcester in great company as always.

There were some discussions about a crawl in July before the school holidays begin (Often a time when rail deals may start to evaporate.)Specific dates and venue were not touched upon, and should start a lively debate,if anyone is feeling fit to get the ball rolling.

We thoroughly enjoyed the day, good to see everyone and also, great to see 2 new faces aka. Beatles38 (Gerry) and Downender (Gavin - AEM's twin!!).
Managed to get 7 new pubs on the day, which included the Hand in Glove, which Quinno took us to at the end of the night, along with Dave and Tammy. The 'hailstone walk' over the river was worth it, as I really liked the Wheatsheaf and the Bell, cracking pubs.

We also managed Hereford and Ledbury yesterday. We had to go back into Worcester yesterday evening to collect our bags, missed the train by a few mins back to Brum, so ended up back in the Dragon for more Little Ale Cart. We then got the 19.53 back to Brum, went to the Craven Arms where I tried a chilli flavoured stout. This unfortunately guided my taste buds to the Barajee curry house along Broad Street for a balti accompanied by a couple of pints of Kingfisher lager - only to notice today that we paid the bill at 1.10am:eek:

Popped into the Welly today for a lunchtime tipple before the train back to Liverpool and bumped into Delboy, before he headed off to the footy, was great to see him.
