I was told quite some time ago to look up Colin Rudd, when his 'Shaun Wright-Phillips please come home' song was still topical, and I looked at a bit of his other stuff - quite emotive & nostalgic. The guy is clearly Wildean and mad about Tolkein. And I notice one recording is from the famous Stalybridge Buffet Bar.

I'm obviously biased, but love the att'd collection of Georgi Kinkladze; almost certainly the most skillful player I've seen live

I've seen George Best play; in the same forward line as Dennis Law. In one game I saw they shared 5 goals between them. 'nuff said!

It's possible I saw Best when I was too young to appreciate such matters, but I've never seen him dribble as well as Kinkladze. When he died, the only clips they came up with were that lob and another fairly unremarkable goal. Unimpressed, sorry.

Law once scored six(!) for us before the game was abandoned, at 6-2, due to rain. He also scored in the rearranged tie which City, typically, managed to lose!

I saw him play just the once - for Fulham against Burnley in October '77 shortly before he left for LA Aztecs. Fulham won 4-1 and Best scored the third. I believe it was the last goal he ever scored in English football.

The trouble is in those days very few matches were recorded, so there is much less of his footballing legacy retained on film than there would be if he played today. I've never seen Georgi Kinkladze play live so I suppose its' not really fair for me to try to make a comaprison, but I did see George collect a volleyed cross on his thigh with such skill that it dropped in front of him, thus allowing him to volley it past John Jackson without a defender getting a sniff of the ball. In the same match he played a cushioned header with such perfect pace that Dennis just had to run on to it and tuck it away. It's not just about dribbling. But to use the word "unmipressed" in the same sentence as "George Best" is a bit offside!

Maybe, but in the absence of any definitive evidence to support the hyperbole that has always surrounded the player, it's rather difficult to understand quite the amount of fuss he generated.

You two haven't been drinking today I'd say, the conversation is far too highbrow.

As for me however, ....my dad took me to OT a few times, I saw the tragic demise of Best, it was at the stage when no one knew if he would turn up. Best, Law and Charlton, even as late as 1971-2 though, were a formidable act, even to an untutored 10 year old. I however found Ian Storey Moore and Willie Morgan just as exciting and more reliable than George.
Anyway, having gone to Alty first there was no looking back. If my dad had taken me to OT before Moss Lane anything could have happened, .......shudders!

I would be on my hands and knees for most of it and to do it clutching a video recorder while springing over the gaps like a gazelle on heat, balancing on the rail where the path has disappeared, er, no thanks. Can't let you footie fans have all your own way. Have a look at Jason Robinson scoring against France in 2001. His acceleration and changes of direction were legendary. From a fairly innocuous looking floated pass he just steps of his right foot and cuts throught the French back line like a knife through butter. God, I wish he was still playing.

It's gonna be mad. Plans have been formulated on the club forum and the first stop is going to be Spoons. We will then probably head en masse to the Bishop Out Of Residence and the Gazebo on the river. I know some are planning to do the Ram as well. I'll just go with the footflow. I've seen Focus 3 or 4 times in recent years (they've even played the musical hotbed of Dartford on a couple of occasions). They are still excellent even though there are only 2 originals in the band - Thys Van Leer (a real character) and I believe the drummer is the same. I went to see Jan Akkerman once a few years back and he was dreadful! Caravan and Camel are also part of my "seen 'em" list. Not Gong though - I did mull over going to see them last year but didn't get round to it. As for Tangerine Dream - got to be the most boring live band on the planet. Highlight was a bongo solo.

I'm always very wary when the line-up's not the original. However, I trust your judgement! Out of curiosity, I did a search on Wikipedia and they've certainly had some personnel changes down the years. In and out like the hokey-cokey.

Hmmm, how strange.

I had assumed you were going mad so had a look and you are completely right. I have no idea why, but I can think of 2 guesses.

Animated gif's (which that is) are just a series of gif images in one file with instructions on how long to leave between the slide show, so like a Zoetrope (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoetrope) (I just wanted to use a silly word really).

So my guess would be that either IE has a frame limit it imposes on displaying animated gif's, or the gif is badly encoded and Firefox is more forgiving than IE (so it will probably be neither now).

Edit: Should have said I liked it and it completely belongs here:

Of course he's right! ETA's always right (well, most of the time!). But you're right to cast some of the blame the Americans' way. The use of the word "jack" as a verb is definitely one more Americanisation (or should it be Americanization?) that we don't need.

It's all a bit of fun really - and to be honest it's onyl people like Lynne Truss, Fowler and the like, whose opinions have been turned into rules, which determines what is "right" and "wrong". If I wanted to be really pedantic, I would have said that the common noun "uncle" would normally have been capitalised it we were writing in the 18th Century, when rules (actually, I think "conventions" is a better word) for capitalisation were more closely associated with those in modern German. And who cares if they used to spell music "musick"?

All in all, I think the only time it really matters is when there is a chance of ambiguity, so the Uncle Jack example was quite a good one (so I would argue that Americanisation and Americanization are equally valid).

Thanks for the vote of confidence Rex - please tell Mrs A.

All of which reminds me of an old teaser - can you write the word "and" five times consecutively (with no intervening words) in a sentence and still make sense?

Sure I can - but I won't do it just in case others want to puzzle it out. I think I've seen it in relation to a pub sign.

You're dead right about Americanisation v the American spelling of Americanization. I worked with someone once who maintained that the original, and therefore correct, way to spell it was with a "z". And I'm sure he was right. Mind you he was my boss, and a right pain forever marching into my office waving Fowler's about, telling me I should be using should when I would always use would! I bet Shakespeare would have a fit if he could see how we're spelling the English language nowadays! But I think we agree that using grammar (and spelling) correctly can sometimes be useful in imparting the correct information. Otherwise we might have thought that Jack's nephew had got the wrong end of the stick, as it were!

oldboots

I bet Shakespeare would have a fit if he could see how we're spelling the English language nowadays!

Just to be pedantic standardised spelling is generally thought to have started (along with Received Pronunciation) around the time Dr Johnson's dictionary was published and slowly took hold over the next 150 years - Shakespere spelled his name several different ways even on the same piece of paper. Just to be a grumpy old bu66er spelling has apparently become increasingly unimportant since the 1960s, witness the number of people who don't know the difference between to, too and two or there, their and they're; and don't get me started on people who don't know what "decimate" means and similar illiteracies.

I used to know the one about the five ands in a row but can't remember it, didn't the novellist Anthony Burgess write a sentence with the word "onions" something like seven times in a row?

Fantastic, that's the real spirit of Christmas! I bet he woke up in the lift a few hours later.

The look of horror from the couple coming out of the lift made me laugh - Not sure it was necessary to push Santa to the ground though!

I guess most of us when 'nicely' would think about going for a curry, or a kebab. Not this guy. Still, at least the police can't accuse him of not 'moving along'....

It's no secret that I am a big fan of Squeeze and every few weeks main man Glenn Tilbrook pops along to his local pub in Charlton for an impromptu session. They are always brillinat nights and his genius never fails to amaze me but this is was just too much. Enjoy...

Wow! a Stylophone for the digital age. I'm sure it would put a smile on Steve Jobs' face if he watched this. (Lord knows, he could probably do with a laugh right now.)Good stuff.

Outstanding clip - one of those things you just have to see to believe - a bit like Randy Bachman (he of Bachman-Turner Overdrive, remember them?) playing his guitar with a drumstick...

Apparently it is a compilation from a Bollywood movie called robot with a Russian voiceover. I was cackling throughout it though.

It would make a great question in the old "What happened next" in A Question of Sport.
