View Full Version : Pubs in TV Drama

TV Drama has filmed in Birmingham pubs in the past. For example, Survivors a couple of years ago featured an episode filmed inside the White Swan on Bradford St in Digbeth.

Currently, the Thursday night BBC2 series, Peaky Blinders, set in 1919 Birmingham features whole scenes inside a large old pub. But I don't recognise it as a Birmingham pub. As most of the exteriors are filmed in Liverpool, I assume its a Liverpool pub.

Does anyone else recognise it?

Have any other real pubs had starring roles in TV dramas?

Doh! Its a set. Its not a real pub. A little digging gave me the answer.

Latymers in Hammersmith was in a few episodes of the Sweeney.

Also in Hammersmith, the Blue Anchor was in an episode of New Tricks.

I seem to remember a thread on this subject in the past, but I'm not sure if it was on this site.

Leadenhall and Borough markets have been used in many film and TV programmes.
I have a theory (and that's all it is) that the exterior appearance of the Queen Vic in Eastenders may have been based on the McMullen's livery from the 1980s and 1990s.

Apparently, it was built inside the old Yorkshire TV Studios in Leeds.

Graziers (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/60174/), in Wakefield, featured in an episode of Frost.

BBC drama Frankie had a scene filmed in Naval Volunteer (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/507/) the night Ian got lucky on her Birthday with somebody else.

The pub in the Young Ones (Kebab & Calculator) was Westbury Park Tavern (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/61801/)

Being Human pub was New Found Out (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/509/) One pub I believe Quinno is quite familiar with.

The Pelton Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/24037/) in Greenwich is the Nags Head in Rock and Chips, the spin off from Only Fools and Horses. A good boozer in its own right.

Also The White Horse (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55405/) in Oxford appears in Morse as well as Lewis. Another good pub.

Simon Pegg seems to shoehorn pubs into most of his TV shows and movies. The sit-com 'Spaced' featured The Monarch (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/22814/) and The Corrib Rest (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23802/) among others.

The 'cornetto trilogy' features a different pub in each movie - Duke Of Albany (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/24117/) in Shaun of the Dead, Crown Hotel (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/33245/) in Hot Fuzz and a whole host of pubs, mostly in Welwyn Garden City and Letchworth in 'The World's End' - the pub crawl themed final part of the trilogy. The Wenlock Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23683/) also puts in an appearance.

The City Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/59965/) recently featured in an unusual scene away from the Street in Corrie - Lloyd and Steve walked in saying 'Blimey, this place has gone downhill', then Lloyd was targetted by racists! Anyway, the pub hasn't gone downhill (even though they could be more adventurous with their beer selection), and i'm sure doesn't have dodgy customers like that!

Bridget Jones' flat was above the Globe (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/24235/) at Borough market

A few months back in a bored moment I started to list all the pubs that had appeared in Morse and Lewis by episode. However, life was too short so I stopped at 14 pubs. There is a web site somewhere that lists a few of them as well. From memory, The Eagle and Child, Bookbinders, The Bear, Randolph Hotel (which actually has a Morse Bar), 2 White Horses and The Head of the River were all there, plus a couple away from Oxford. I also found reference to two pubs which don't seen to exist, so it would be good to know which ones were actually used in the filming.

Nice one Al! Saved me looking back through my records which, in my OCD way, I would probably have done at about 2.30 tomorrow morning.

There's a fair few used in Lovejoy but I've resisted getting OCD as far too far away to conceivably visit.
