In the mid to late 80s i went in quite a few pubs in Londons East End,most were in Bethnal Green,Mile End or Hackney.

I have been looking for these pubs on the site but lots seem to be missing,i took phot's of some of these lost pubs but they are on the old 110 film and i am unable to get them on disc.

Here are four pubs that i could not find on the site

Duke of Sussex Shepherd Neame tied house 94 goldsmith row Bethnal Green Pub visited 21/11/1987
Durham Arms Watney tied house,no real ale here, 408 hackney road Bethnal green Pub visited 21/11/1987
The Hare Ben Truman tied house Real ales on the bar, 505 cambridge heath road Bethnal Green Pub visited 21/11/1987
Rose and Crown Youngs tied house, 13/15/mare street, Hackney, Pub visited 21/11/1987

There are loads more pubs i have done in this area of London but most were not photographed.

I would be very interested if anyone knows of these pubs or has even been in them.

Cheers Alan

Al The Hare is here. (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/24950/)

The Rose and Crown 13 -15 Mare Street still has a pub frontage but is closed. It's close to the canal,so I can pop up and photograph that as well.I dont normally submit closed pubs but if that helps you I will do so.Also never been inside.

There is a pub at 94 Goldsmiths Row now called The Albion (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/54544/),owned by a Baggies fan.Popular real ale pub, sadly unvisited by me.

Thanks for those Bucking Fastard and Strongers,

I did'nt think of looking at Cambridge Heath i was just looking at the Bethnal Green and Hackney lists, the Albion is definatly the ex Duke of Sussex.

I will have to chuck a few more pubs into the pot that i dont know about as it did not take long for both of you to sort the first four pubs out.

Do you have any ideas about how to get old 110 negatives onto disc,i have asked at Asda and they dont have the right sized machines to do it.

Cheers Alan

You will find these sites extremely useful for this :-

The Lost Pubs Project (http://www.closedpubs.co.uk/)

East London Beer Guide (http://www.pigsear.org.uk/newguide.html)

I've no recollection at all of the Durham Arms. It is shown under E2 as a closed pub.

As I remember the Hare was a Truman's pub and I vaguely recall once playing darts in there. It's listed on the site in E2 with a review by Rex Rattus.

The Duke of Sussex was if I remember rightly a Bass Charrington House before becoming a Shep's house. It is now The Albion and again is on the site in E2 with a review by Pubsignman. I'm fairly certain I visited it as a Bass Charrington pub, but don't remember much, other than it was probably one of the better pubs in E2.

The Rose and Crown was one of the eight East London Young's pubs back in the seventies. The only two that survive as Young's houses are the Prince(ss) Of Wales in Lea Bridge Road E5 and the Queen's Head in Flamborough Street E14. This one, the Royal Standard in E8, the Norfolk Arms in E8 and the Britannia in Barking are all gone. I visited this place an more than one occasion as well as all the other 7 Young's pubs. It was a pretty basic boozer.

Thanks for that Strongers, they look very interesting, just got to save some money now and get one,all of my spare cash goes on pub crawls.

If i do ever get one there will be some very interesting photo's appearing on Pubs Galore.

The online guide is an updated version of the printed one, so it shows renames and closures.
I have some old 110 format B/W negatives and I looked into the possibility of a scanner that would do them (this was quite a few years ago now). I ended up with a scanner that just handled 35mm film and transparencies, as one that did 110 film as well was just too expensive.

However I did find This (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002IRXAZ0) at Amazon.

Hi Al - as others have mentioned, the Duke of Sussex is now called The Albion and is probably unrecognisable from your visit, given that it is now packed full of football memorabilia. It's a pretty decent pub and was in the 2012 GBG.

I'm not sure if your tour of the East End ventured into Mile End/Bow/Wapping/Limehouse, but if so, the following blog posts might be of interest.

Of course, another aspect of any planned trip to East London is the beer prices! There is no such thing as a cooking beer down here, as unless it's a Spoons or the King William IV you will get fleeced.

I couldn't believe it when I recently got charged £4.20 for a 4.4% beer in E5, brewed less than half a mile away that wasn't even clear. I really wished I had walked off without paying.

I liked looking through those Pubsignman, there was a nice picture of the Star and Garter in Whitechapel which was a Bass Charrington house when me and the wife went in it on 22 February 1986.

I have done lots of pubs in Bethanl Green and Whitechapel, plus a few in Mile End and Wapping,i have also done most proper old pubs in Spitalfields and Aldgate these were done more recently around 2008,i have never been to Limehouse though.

Here are a few more pubs that i could not find on the site, there are loads of photos of shops and the like that i have been in when they were pubs that are listed on the site.

Apple and Pears i think on or near Liverpool Street station
Aunt Sally, Watney tied house not far from Mile End tube
Crystal Tavern, Taylor Walker tied house, 25 burdett road Mile End
Prince of Wales, Ben Truman tied house, 2 grove road Mile End

These pubs were visited on 19 November 1983 with a gang of lads and girls,we did many more pubs but these are listed on the site.

London Hospital Tavern, Taylor Walker tied house, 176 whitechapel road, Pub visited 22 February 1986 with my wife.

I hope some members remember some of these pubs

Cheers Alan

Thanks for the quick reply Strongers,
That Apple and Pears is not the one we went in,we hired a bus out for the day for a trip to London, once there we went our different ways me and my best mate went to Brixton for a dinner session,we then made arrangments to meet at Liverpool Street station,i dont know why there but that is where we met,we then went in the Apple and Pears and some of the braver lads and Gals decided to hit the East End,we went on the tube and finally decided to get off at Mile End where we did a good few pubs.

Any ideas about the London Hospital Tavern.

Cheers Alan

There used to be an Apples And Pears on the Bishopsgate side of Liverpool Street Station. I remember it as I vaguely recall it sold something drinkable. It would have been demolished when the Station was redeveloped.

Al found this on the Rose and Crown http://www.closedpubs.co.uk/london/e8_hackney_rosecrown.html

Al10000 just discovered that this pub IS on pubsgalore but under a previous name The Cambridge (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/71808/) .There is still a plaque on the wall bearing this name, and the post office website does list 13 Mare Street as being the address of The Cambridge, even though the pub is closed .It seems that the old name lives on ,and that is how it has been listed here.It is unreviewed ,so a historic note from you may well be worthwhile.Hope this helps.

It's not a previous name in my recollection.
It was renamed the Cambridge in 1998. There were a group of Young's pubs in East London that they leased from Whitbread at some point prior to the mid 1970s. This was one of them and I assume it became the Cambridge when the lease expired. I only knew it as the Rose and Crown (from the mid 1970s).

Apparently Enterprise got their oar in before it closed (which probably explains it).

I heard a story that Young's swapped the Prince(ss) of Wales from Whitbread for the Black Horse at Gomshall. The last time I passed by the Black Horse it was a glorified Fish and Chip shop! It is now closed, good work Whitbread!!

Royal standard:161-165 Kingsland road,Hackney E2
Tiger:245 wick road,Hommerton E9
Queens Head:8 flamborough street,Stepney E14

I will add a short review and hopefully add my photo of it when it was up and running at some point in the future.

Thanks for looking into this,Cheers Alan
