Decent week for a change.

Marston's -Pedigree
Wye Valley - HPA
Weetwood -Cheshire Cat
TT -Landlord
Joules - Pale Ale
Joules -Slumbering Monk
Marston's -Amarillo Single Hop
Sharp's -Doom Bar

BOTW goes to Wye Valley HPA in great nick in The Duke of Wellington,Lichfield.I am normally not that keen on sweet pale ales but the interesting apple flavour helped make the HPA a very decent drink.

Next week annual pilgrimage to The Harp should produce candidates for BOTW ,although the pre Wembley visit to The Euston Tap could as well.

Norfolk, Suffolk,Kent.
Brandon Brewery-Saxon Gold: 4% ABV peppery golden ale, served on a dull Monday a touch on the cold side.
Adnams-Ghost Ship:4.5%ABV. It's Adnams, but not as we know it. Crisp and grapefruit.
Adnams-Fat Sprat:3.8%ABVGoldings pepperyness and Yank citrus, a deep malt ground base; a very new seasonal classic.
Colchester Brewery-Double Brown Ale4.4%ABV Dark, ruby, chocolately. A bit on the sweet side, but a good MILD for May.
Rother Valley-Ruby Wheat4.4%ABV.I haven't had much exposure to wheat beer, so didn't know what to expect. Pleasant enough.

I've drunk Adnams beers for over 40 years, and have rarely had a bad 'un, but now they seem to be firing on all cylinders. My BOTW, and on the BOTY list-Adnams Fat Sprat.

Only been in my local this week who now have a Darkstar beer on nearly all the time due to its increasing popularity, so this makes my BOTW rather predictable ,the same as last week Darkstar American Pale Ale
Also tried this week,

Darkstar Hophead
Hogsback TEA
Vale Brill Gold
Ringwood Old Thumper

A few to choose from this week :-

East London Brewing Co Orchid Mild 3.6%
Great Western Brewing Co Meerkat Mild 3.9%
Blindman Golden Spring 4.0%
Brodie's Pale Blend 4.2%
Greene King Ale Fresco 4.3%
Welton's Buckland Shag 4.7%
Adnam's Mayday 5.0%
Moorhouse's Pendle Witches Brew 5.1%
Milestone Fletcher's Ale 5.2%
Brodie's Oyster Tea Stout (Keykeg) 7.0%
Brodie's Citra For Breakfast (Keykeg) 10.1%
Brodie's Big Mofo Stout (Keykeg) 10.5%

As it's the tail end of Nay I am narrowing it down to the two milds and the ELB Orchid at £2.15 in the Leyton Drum just shades it. I like all of this brewer's offerings and their Orchid mild is a classic traditional example.

Citra for Breakfast, 10.1%, hehehe!!!

I presume you had those in King William, Aqualung? As a matter of interest, what do they charge for these strong keykegs?

Quiet week for me, with only six tried:

Fernandes - Perle.
Fernandes - Malt Shovel MILD.
Fernandes - Sunshine IPA.
Ossett - Challenger MILD.
Acorn - Yorkshire Pride.
Leeds - Vienna MILD(?)

As Mild Month draws to a close, it's quite nice to be able to nominate a drop of the dark stuff as BOTW. However, with Ossett keen to point out the beer features Challenger hops, it's a warning that there's debatably too much hop character for the MILD police. Still a decent session beer though.

Like Aqualung i could have plumped for Orchid Mild. i had 3 pints of it last night but the
Marks and Spencer bottled Citra ipa brewed at Oakham was superb.

The Keykeg offerings are all at £3.30 and range from 3.7% fruit sours to the double figure ones. I have a suspicion that The Citra For Breakfast may not have actually existed, but was wrongly labelled Big Mofo! I'm not sure where that "for breakfast" name comes from as to me the idea of knocking that stuff back for breakfast is fairly alarming.

I hope people don't think I go around looking for people drinking "improper" milds and snatch their glass away whilst whipping out my truncheon!

Leeds Vienna is not a mild either, despite what it says on the pump clip. This dark bitter is very bitter indeed.

You really don't like this beer, do you SH. :) I remember the polarised discussion on the 28/4 BOTW thread (which I added to yesterday). As I said on my post there, I didn't get a lot from it, possibly because it was a bit tired. Certainly, on the basis of what I drank, I wouldn't call it 'very bitter'.

Tried this week:
Oakham Bishops Farewell
Pedigree
Holdens Golden Glow
Wye Valley HPA
TT Landlord
Joules Pale Ale

All of these were good and all well kept but BOTW was TT Landlord, beautifully kept at the Horse and Jockey (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/34415/) in Lichfield.

Thanks for pointing that thread out - I missed it at the time.

A "Marmite" beer indeed. I think my reaction was more to do with having expected a MILD only to be assaulted by lots of New World hoppiness. If it had been described accurately, I either wouldn't have ordered it or would at least have known what to expect.

A cycle trip to Suffolk last week included a couple of pub stops - thirsty work, that cycling :).

Sam Smiths Dark MILD (keg) 2.8% here (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/30797/)
Blue Cow (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/21309/) Best Bitter 4.2%
Milestone Lions Pride 3.8%
Oldershaw Grantham Dark (MILD) 3.6%
Timothy Taylor Golden Best (MILD) 3.5% here (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/64164/)
Woodfordes Wherry 3.8% here (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/58729/)
Earl Soham/Cliff Quay Bitter 3.4% here (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/35392/)
Nethergate Ruby Ale (Bottled) 4.2%
Nethergate Old Growler (porter) (bottled) 5.5%
Nethergate Growler Bitter 3.9% here (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/57629/)
Marstons Pedigree 4.5%
Blue Monkey 99 Red Baboons 4.2% here (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/56037/) after catching a train to the Peak District - thirsty work, that train riding;).
Oakwell Dark MILD 3.4% here (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/6674/)
Thornbridge Black Harry (MILD) 3.9% here (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/71134/)
Thwaites Nutty Black (MILD) (bottled) 3.8%
Bakewell Swift Nick 3.8% here (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/54925/)
Salamander Tree Hugger (porter) 4.8%
Sawbridgeworth Selhurst Park Flyer 3.8%

As usual, although I enjoyed the Wherry in Norfolk, and the Old Growler bottled porter was very good indeed, the Beer of the Week for me was at the Blake (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/43068/) after returning to Sheffield, a toss up between the Tree Hugger and the Selhurst Park Flyer. I'll go for the Sawbridgeworth Selhurst Park Flyer in celebration of W*tf*rd losing to Crystal Palace at Wembley:p.

Glad the result brought as much happiness to you as it did in SE25.BTW the brewer at Sawbridgeworth used to play for Palace,a grand total of 15 games between 1959 and 1961 all in Division 4.

If they had just called it Vienna Dark I think it would have avoided all this as although some Darks are milds it isn't really a definitive alternative name for it.

The New World hoppiness would probably have drawn me to it!!

I can't add much to the 'Vienna Mild' debate, having not tried it myself, but what I do know is that the Hobson's MILD I enjoyed in the Old Joint Stock on the Bank Holiday Sunday was perfection in a glass. Shame it rarely (never?) makes it down to London, as I've had some rubbish milds this year.

I have noticed the Blue Monkey -99 red baboons being described as a mild for May in some pubs.Have drank it a few times when it first appeared but don't think it was a mild.
