Another winner from Oakham gets BOTW ,namely their Winter Wraith.Dark, rich, nutty yet with that trademark intensely bitter Oakham finish this pint raised my spirits on a very wet and windy day in Northampton, served in the outstanding Malt Shovel.

Next week heading to The Falcon,Clapham Junction which always seems like a permanent beer festival and should provide fodder for BOTW.

Limited choice this week,
Hopback Odyssey
Woodforde's Wherry
Marston's Double Drop
And lashings and lashings of my BOTW

A clear winner this week, Knaresborough Steak & Ale Beef Stout brewed with real beef, much better than it sounds and brewed to a very old recipe in collaboration with Kirkstall Brewery, incredibly drinkable at 6.5% the only hint of its strength is in the nose. For the record this is what it was up against:

Mordue Lubelski
Acorn Barnsley Bitter
Acorn Red 1887
Acorn Old Moor Porter
Theakstons Masham Glory
Rat Brown Rat
Magic Rock High Wire NZ
Scarborough Mild

plus some excellent bottles from the likes of Nogne O,Chimay and Anchor (the long established US micro brewer in San Fransisco, they seem to have dropped the Steam Beer part of the name) but I don't usually count bottled beers for this.

Wittenden

And lashings and lashings of my BOTW
Darkstar Hophead

Me too, without the lashing.

Boating in and around Northampton yielded:
Elgoods 3 Dane Elgoods
Pedigree
Old Empire IPA
Oakham Mompessons Gold, Winter Wraith, Bishops Farewell
Franklins Grumpy Guvnor
Great Oakley Gobble
Black Sheep

A good selection with everything by Oakham excellent as ever but BOTW was Great Oakley Gobble. Amber coloured and fruity but still nicely bitter and full of flavour at 4.5%. Who'd turn down a fruity Gobble?

It was quite a good week for me with some new local brews, a quick trip to the refurbished Bell, two new Brodie’s and the welcome return of an old Brodie’s favourite.

London Fields Hackney Hopster 4.2%
Vale Hopocalypse 4.3%
Mordue Lubelski 4.5%
Robinson's Double Hop 5.0%
Brodie's Dr Rudi Pale 5.0%
Redemption Fellowship Porter 5.1%
Brodie's Jamaican Stout 5.3%
Redemption Big Chief 5.5%
Tap East Porter 6.4%
Brodie's Mentol Brown 6.5%
Brodie's Citra For Breakfast 10.1% (Keykeg)
Brodie's Imperial IPA 11.0% (Keykeg)
Brodie's Romanov Stout 12.1% (Keykeg)

Plus an honourable mention for Gwynt Y Ddraig Dog Dancer Cider at £1.99 a pint.

The four contenders are three of the Brodie’s, namely Jamaican Stout, Dr Rudi and Mentol Brown along with the Redemption Big Chief.

I feel obliged to give the edge to rhe Big Chief, as I can’t be certain when I will come across it again. It was served on gravity in impeccable condition at the Waltham Forest Council Social Club beer festival.
It’s a classic American style IPA with a massive hop and malt flavour. I was going to nominate it for the Good Bad and Ugly list but it’s already there!!

I would say that the Jamaican Stout ran it very close indeed.

Bit of a frustrating week, with lots of beer from normally reliable breweries (Titanic, Marble, Kelham Island) all off form.

BOTW therefore goes to Windsor and Eton Canberra, which is an unusal brew using hops from Australia and New Zealand as well as a bit of Canadian Maple Syrup. Nicely balanced though and I wouldn't mind trying more of it, although I think it's a limited edition.

Not as late as me though (again). :o

Blue Bee Nectar Pale was excellent in The Baum.

Light and Pale it made a change from the Autumn Ales & Stouts that abound at the moment.
